Good people, Just thought I'd share this with you. KTN is launching Kenya's first tech show next week Wednesday at 9.50pm. We're about all things tech but given our mass market appeal, nothing too technical. Basically, tech in English, if you get the drift. If you watch KTN, you might have seen our teaser http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpYtFlZyaR4 This has taken years of planning and putting it together, convincing and all that. Putting together a weekly half-hour show on prime time on nothing but technology is not one of the easiest things, especially in this country. But that is the challenge the production team and myself have taken upon ourselves. But we'd love to hear from you, the real techies (not wannabe techies like myself). We'd like ideas on what you'd like to see on the show. The Skunkociety has loads of great initiatives, projects, ideas and stuff that we'd like to give the national platform and influence of KTN. We'd also like feedback on the show once it airs. We'll avail most of it online, and repeat it on Saturday afternoon (yeah I know the Mexico v France game is on at the time) Its still at a beta stage right now but we will appreciate whatever shreds of info, ideas, suggestions, feedback, contacts that we can get. After all, Tech Junkie is for you. You can contact me or email techjunkie@standardmedia.co.ke Regards -- Twitter: @LarryMadowo Facebook.com/LarryMadowo

Congrats Larry. Looking forward to the stories. Will all of them go up on YouTube? Erik Hersman www.Ushahidi.com Twitter: @whiteafrican On Jun 18, 2010, at 9:29 AM, Larry Madowo <larrymads@gmail.com> wrote:

Larry Thanks for your offlist reply and the onlist. Only that we should focus on Kenyans who have lots to show and are never given a chance because we have foreigners whom we think are more cool and would make us look more cool internationally. We are metroploitan yes but there are many local stories ignored to feature foreigners who masquerade as locals With the premier of the new program, KTN and Standard should have new seriously done websites with the help of skunkers. I wouldn't complain even if they applied for a grant from Kenya ICT Board to develop a news website with a portal integrated since it seems the management doesn't seem to believe in investing in online services. Larry, Probably a good step in the right direction. I know the major towns are supported by 'tech', both in business or government. The show will certainly introduce the wider non techie audience to the possibilities and will also help them embrace the fast change that is IT. Larry This is great considering that we approached KTN in June 2008 with the same idea and the producers felt that there was not much stories or features to do in tech in Kenya. I dont trust that it has "taken years". It is a work of months yes but not years. Anyway, be open to criticism and dont act as a know-it-all. That way the program will progress. I cant miss Click and Digital Planet on BBC and Tech@Work on CNBC. Owicho On Fri, Jun 18, 2010 at 9:29 AM, Larry Madowo <larrymads@gmail.com> wrote:

I suggest that you consider women. Not many tech programs seem to do that. Example: 1) cyber cafes business in the city center *Versus* the estates 2) phone repair guys in Luthuli and river road (these guys actually flash phone sware and repair micro-circuits) - though they may not be your typical techie, their skills are handed down... 3) DVD @ 50 bob - business run by campus and college leavers along Moi avenue ( the 'science' behind downloading from the internet, converting to various forms and mass producing them - is techy !!) 4) vehicle electricians and installers - i find these guys pretty cool with what they do (though they do not have formal education) - some of them can install anything on ur vehicle (including those LCD screens to have a gps on ur dashboard?) 5) 2nd hand computer shops - I think we have all visited these - I think what they do to create cheap affordable computers by using clones and their parts is pretty awesome Will think up of more laterz...

@Larry Could you do a show about Skunkworks Forum and on the challenges, it faces, "buying a server for >6months" On 18 June 2010 13:35, ndungu stephen <ndungustephen@gmail.com> wrote:

@Larry, nice one! I had a project lined up similar to your initiative for online purposes ( the posts may still be in the old archives ) and you have my full support for suggested content. Since you mentioned the slot as being 30 minutes, I have the following to suggest : a) 5 minute summary of tech events and initiatives taking place. b) 5 minute interviews of players in the ICT sector c) 5 minute projects and solution initiatives going on d) 10 minutes of hardcore tech stuff like a " HOW TO? ". These videos can be produced as amatuer content using simple video cameras and edited by KTN in commercial content. e) 5 minute closer on tips and general items in tech sector. Cheers and good luck. You will alway find ideas/content on this list that could be useful to your program. :-) Me thots.

And could you also use it to hammer the ISPs and any other service providers who offer crappy services, Government about transforming into ICT ... On 18 June 2010 14:36, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

I would like to second AKI's time schedule but with some notes. In part (b) DO NOT have a sit down (two/three or four) way discussion with anyone. you could instead do the one question many answers evenly distributed. (No self introductions, missions or visions from anybody). Introduce a lesson teaser from the beginning. This should be something fresh and not package level. something that will interest the majority of the non Geek Kenyan's e.g. how to configure mail on you Nokia. Sponsored section. This will definitely exist, Dont make it too obviouse (see my point 1 above). always introduce a twist to this to keep guys interested. e.g. if the sponsor is Ebrahims have them do a scored/detailed review of some gadgets they sell and instead of screaming their name, have their logo somewhere in the back e.g. the note books or price tags. You could also do product reviews, like compare the new macbooks to the previous models, or like those MS ads where armed with e.g. USD1000, some dude or dudette goes out to purchase a kick ass machine, then come back and review it etc I would be particularly amused to see a feature comparing the 13" MBP to the Alienware M15X, for personal reasons. Car Tech would also really pique my interest, like a step by step tutorial on how to install GPS on a kawaida car, then test it out in real life, like trying to get directions to the Subatech garage in industrial area, then sit back and follow the directions on the GPS thingy etc. Pls make sure that in one episode, you show how to swap an ignition key with a Engine Start button, like this one here<http://www.nihoncar.com/en/news_gallery.php?id=567&img_name=Toyota_IST_TRD_005.jpg>then in the episode after, show how to swap out the Engine Start button with a voice activated command, like that bentley in the 2012 movie... Hacking seems to interest most people, so you could do a feature on how to compromise a yahoo email account, but you might want to check with your lawyers first. :-)

Yeah,,,, You could also do a feature where you compare internet speeds/reliability by various providers using tools like www.speedtest.net -This doesnt have to be a one time thing - but something that can appear on different episodes because parameters change : example: 3-5 min clips 1. ISP on fiber or ISP on microwave or copper wire 2. Telco companies and their 3G, edge, etc offers on USB 3. Zuku and its peers 4. Then the same tests can be conducted on different areas on different episodes e.g in Kawangware vs Westlands They can also be conducted for different clients e.g Corporate vs Home user, fastest Cybercafes (and why) NOTE: this can be helpful to show internet penetration and maturity [because KBStatistics are never truly accurate on the subject)

And we'll appreciate an investigative feature (Tell akina Ale Namu) on the ISPs and their speeds. Call it "Uwizi wa Bandwidth"! ;-)

Yeah, like while they do not seem to follow any of the procedures I see on CSI when handling evidence

I would actually take a different approach What does KTN want to see as far as the tech landscape is concerned? Please come up with a Vision for Kenyas tech landscape (its highly, highly underdeveloped) Once you know the objectives of what you want to achieve(rather than just another tech show) then you can bridge the gap e.g. Case study Why are many Kenyan programmers are very lazy?(im not saying they are, this is an example) 1. They are used to templates 2. they dont want to burn the midnight oil learning fundamental programming languages and techniques 3. They want easy cash from open source so theyd rather just copy paste Then profile a hardcoder who is succesful, give economic statistics of the potential of the market, give benchmarks to international practices, show innovative ideas from around the world, courses available in kenya and elsewhere....im sure you get my drift That way the show will become the prime driver of the tech landscape not just another show showing us macbooks and ipads etc If you do a feature on the ipad, why not show a kenyan centric app that has recipes like ugali and nyoyo.... @chuks, 1 reason police dont use technology is that we wil no longer need to invest in them( or bribe them) As for traffic lights, they like a system that isnt fair. For example, the ratio of minutes at Aerodrome Road/Uhuru Highway - Nyayo Round about/Uhuru Highway - Waiyaki Way at 6.20 am is 0 minutes/20 minutes/0 minutes /5 minutes) . If we deployed automated lights, police would loose the right to give preference to more privileged roads over less priveleged ones. Have u seen the way this guys work hard to over ride traffic lights where they exist instead of enforcing them.

Evans Larry should not do like they do in SA. I was at a media briefing on Media Act 2008 and what came out was most part of the act was copy-paste from SA. I really think that it will be the start of the road to nowhere when they copy paste. And Larry should start the show by detaching from the niche club of iHub. I think that they will loose relevance very fast when they start giving priority to iHub members as you can see the show is turning into some kind of Ushahidi mumbo jumbo. There are very many untold stories out here and if I want ushahidi stories, I can google them. Again I maintain that please you avoid masqueraders. Wow, I love the response this has elicited. Thank you all very much. Actually there has been a bit of an unfortunate development. Larry should not do like they do in SA.

This might have been mentioned before: a "Kenyan website of the week" section that features websites with interesting services (as opposed to corporate marketing websites), high traffic or simply great design. A little background on the people behind it, how the ideas were executed etc might be interesting. ________________________________ From: Evans Ikua <ikua.evans@gmail.com> To: Skunkworks Mailing List <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> Sent: Wed, June 23, 2010 5:46:13 AM Subject: Re: [Skunkworks] KTN Tech Junkie I did not talk about copy pasting. I'm curious how many actual projects/implementations/prototypes Larry has received to feature in the show. To put it in a different way: will skunks-ke members mostly be the audience, or will skunks-ke members participate in providing actual projects to be featured in the show? Wondering aloud... I did not talk about copy pasting. Its just a source of ideas on possibilities, then we do it our way, with local content. There are way too many tech stories and content that can fill a show for a whole year.

Larry should not do like they do in SA.
Do Kenyan stories in Kenya Television Network

@Steve, point number 3 - on downloading movies & selling them @Moi Avenue, would land some guys behind bars. The Copyright guys would have an easy time getting their catch. @ Larry, This is an innovative approach and though I'm 'telly-phobic', I can give one or two ideas. There is a -ve perception with the society on entrepreneurs. They are seen as failures who could not get the blue collar jobs, people who do not have dreams to bank on and such blah blah blah. My take therefore, is to make the programme change such lopsided thoughts and create a culture of entrepreunerial development. There are quiet a number of entrepreneurs who have made an impact into the society either by improving on what M-pesa, Zap or Yu cash have not been able to, for example. Also, do a review of some of the laws which hinder entrepreneurial development such as registration of a trade mark, patents etc., and of course, the impact of techy to a mama mboga, mtu wa mjengo etc. My thoughts! As for traffic lights, they like a system that isnt fair.

Good people,
Just thought I'd share this with you. KTN is launching Kenya's first tech show next week Wednesday at 9.50pm. We're about all things tech but given our mass market appeal, nothing too technical. Basically, tech in English, if you get the drift. If you watch KTN, you might have seen our teaser http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpYtFlZyaR4
This has taken years of planning and putting it together, convincing and all that.
We'll avail most of it online, and repeat it on Saturday afternoon (yeah I know the Mexico v France game is on at the time)
Its still at a beta stage right now but we will appreciate whatever shreds of info, ideas, suggestions, feedback, contacts that we can get. After all, Tech Junkie is for you.
You can contact me or email techjunkie@standardmedia.co.ke

Larry, This is a personal request: Can you guys organise to have an actual IT project, show it from the first stage of scoping, all the way to implementation? The scope and size of project doesnt matter at this point. The project will be continuing through each episode of Tech Junkie, with all the ...previously on... and ... next week ... This for one will buy you a good dedicated following. I personally would not wish to miss a single episode. In the program you will showcase the challenges encountered, and how you resolved them (kinda like Prototype This but running lasting more than one episode). It can be anything from building a website, a small gadget, etc On Wed, Jun 23, 2010 at 2:02 PM, Gituma Nturibi <gnturibi@gmail.com> wrote:
