THE VALUE OF USING ONLY GENUINE MICROSOFT SOFTWARE

FYI ... Dear Valued Partner, Am pleased to share that Kenya Copyright Board, together with Microsoft, yesterday launched a 30-day Amnesty Campaign to help fight Software Piracy in Kenya. Please use this opportunity to educate customers & share this information… --- The reasons for purchasing genuine software as opposed to pirated, counterfeit, illegal or unlicensed versions go well beyond principles of morality and integrity. Purchasing genuine software and from reputable sources actually makes smart business sense. 7 Business Benefits of Using Only Genuine Microsoft software The risk of damage to your machine leading to loss of data and information Counterfeit software is usually accompanied by viruses that could damage your hard drive and destroy vital data and information. Recently, a reseller was convicted and sentenced to 6 months in jail for dealing in pirated and unlicensed software. Think about the impression it gives about your business. Using unlicensed software can affect your company’s reputation negatively. Think about the impression you create when you pass along shoddy spreadsheets to your clients, customers will ultimately not repeat patronage. Offenders hurt the economy of Kenya. Recent studies by IDC/BSA estimated East & Southern Africa’s loss in revenue at over 100 Million Dollars in 2010 (Kenya’s Piracy rate is currently at 79%). A modest reduction will create more thousands of jobs, boost economic growth and generate millions of dollars in taxes for Government. Your refusal to use pirated software is your contribution to this course. With genuine software, you are guaranteed peace of mind. It may surprise some, but using genuine software on more computers than a business is licensed to support is also illegal. This is, for lack of better terminology, a fresh steaming pile. Preventing this capital flight will strengthen our economy more than the meagre taxes. Further from this, aren't licenses exempt from VAT? Our current USD fluctuation was caused, apparently, by the sudden transfer of 200M USD from the economy. How would allowing a further 100M USD to leave the economy create more jobs? And how exactly will using original MS software create jobs? Isn't the premise that it's more stable? Hence you won't need as many support staff to maintain a network? And support is outsourced to India anyway?

How? Shoddy spreadsheets are a factor of poor training and general user carelessness, lack of attention to detail. Unless Microsoft comes with a kit to reduce user stupidity? Wouldn't a better example be the genuine activation pop up during a presentation? The risk of damage to your machine leading to loss of data and information
Counterfeit software is usually accompanied by viruses that could damage your hard drive and destroy vital data and information. These data and information are most times irrecoverable due to the effect of these malware attacks on your systems
Again, buying genuine Microsoft software will require me to have an antivirus anyway, so I'll pirate and pay for the antivirus? I'm not attacking you or Microsoft, I just think that a company like Microsoft should pass their press statements through a Turing test before sending out to the masses. They have the resources and people to do this... We should pay for the software because it's the right thing to do and because we risk jail time, the rest...

@Phares, spot on! Even the proprietary systems are doing a shoddy amatuer job on the benefits of paying rather than starting an all out war against the system of abuse, deliberate piracy. The other thing is about the Kenya Copyright board, they are not a law onto themselves. Therefore, it would be nice for every kenyan to know what their rights are, we should list these. Can the board threaten you in any way whasover? Can it just walk into your premises and demand to inspect your computers ( this should not be the case ), what is the mode of testing for piracy and has this been approved within our Kenyan IT sectors legally? Do you need to have a lawyer present so that the testing procedure is not fiddled with? What representation does KCB have with the proprietary software vendors or is it a general extension. Some thots on know your rights. Rgds.

is it just to jail someone for ten years for having windows xp unlicensed , a software no longer supported by Microsoft? On Mon, Nov 14, 2011 at 11:51 AM, aki <aki275@gmail.com> wrote:

7 Business Benefits of Using Only Genuine Microsoft software
The risk of damage to your machine leading to loss of data and information
Counterfeit software is usually accompanied by viruses that could damage your hard drive and destroy vital data and information. These data and information are most times irrecoverable due to the effect of these malware attacks on your systems
Access to Support Services from Microsoft
When you purchase genuine software, you have access to technical support services from Microsoft or its Partners. These services are only available to users of genuine software.

Technology is dynamic and as a result, upgrades and newer versions of this software are released regularly. These are also accessible and available to users of genuine software. Pirated Software exposes you to legal action and possible jail terms

Recently, a reseller was convicted and sentenced to 6 months in jail for dealing in pirated and unlicensed software.

Yes, that's a valid reason to pay for the software. My issue is not whether or not you should pay, it's the temerity the Microsoft .ke office has to release a poorly thought press statement. I can assure you that Microsoft Office paid version in no way improved my excel skills. In no way did it improve the quality of my spreadsheet. I agree. Things worth paying for are those that have value added services..... eg, video games that allow you to play online. I'm guessing their next claim is that paid Outlook will allow you to send typo-free emails and that CV's edited in paid MS word would be guaranteed a job. That being said, I'm not advocating piracy. If you are using software I believe you should pay for it (if you don't want to pay for it, use Open Source alternatives), however, using scare campaigns...

"At just 12 years old, Brianna LaHara was forced into settlement with the RIAA and had to pay $2,000 in damages for illegally sharing music." we need to be a little worried about this piracy laws, what would you do as a parent if brianna was your child. kenyan kids do have computers, mobile phones and the introduction of piracy laws Kenya means they can also be sued and maybe jailed for piracy. its not just about money. I think we need someone from Microsoft to clarify some things e.g. 1. If I am using an unsupported version e.g XP or Win 98 (actually one of my laptops still uses 98) can I still be jailed? 2. When did this 30 day window period start exactly and when does it end? Surely, there must me someone from Microsoft on this list who can provide us with a clear picture of what is going on...! This is a very serious matter and I can foresee some of us being victimised by neanderthals from the copyright board so that they can be bribed. Please please please...we need some clarification. FYI ...
Dear Valued Partner,
Am pleased to share that Kenya Copyright Board, together with Microsoft, yesterday launched a 30-day Amnesty Campaign to help fight Software Piracy in Kenya. Please use this opportunity to educate customers & share this information…
---
The reasons for purchasing genuine software as opposed to pirated, counterfeit, illegal or unlicensed versions go well beyond principles of morality and integrity. Purchasing genuine software and from reputable sources actually makes smart business sense.
You get access to updates and upgrades.
Technology is dynamic and as a result, upgrades and newer versions of this software are released regularly. These are also accessible and available to users of genuine software. On the contrary, for pirated versions, there are neither upgrades nor access to new versions which reduces long term value.
Pirated Software exposes you to legal action and possible jail terms
The use of pirated software by many is perceived as minor level mischief but this is incorrect. In Kenya, executives of companies whose employees are found to use pirated or illegal software are liable to be fined or even jailed.
Developing a relationship with a reliable partner or vendor can help in understanding licensing, product certification and other elements of genuine software.
You don’t only spare yourself of needless headaches down the line; you'll also enjoy the security of doing the right thing, both for yourself and your business.
