Hallo Skunks. I am working on an sms system on the Linux Platform. Anyone here who has tried either gnokii or kannel gateways, kindly advice which one is better. Kind Regards

Hi.... I have used neither. What do you want to achieve. I am looking for a solution I can hook up to a dlink IP pabx and receive please call me notifications, complete with email prompts and send sms broadcasts... can either do that On Dec 12, 2013 5:04 AM, "jeremy sinja" <jeysinja@gmail.com> wrote:

kannel works for me, but you chose based on features you want, not what you hear about them. ./Ok3ch On Thu, Dec 12, 2013 at 3:04 AM, jeremy sinja <jeysinja@gmail.com> wrote:

I am thinking of a web based sms application. Features I am thinking about include the gateway manipulating the database inserting incoming and outgoing mass mail. On 12/11/13, Okechukwu <okechukwu@gmail.com> wrote:

You can also look at smstools+playsms. You should be able to do email to sms, sms to email, bulk sms to groups, etc. About speed, not sure how it compares to other tools. Depending on what you want to achieve.... There is a GUI app known as *KALKUN* but i didn't find it rich in features. Maybe can sort you out - uses MYSQL database. I have used GAMMU as linux s/w and FUSION 220/110 as h/w connected via console. I did most of the coding to match what i wanted [ Was able to convert SMS to EMAILS and EMAILS sent from specific sender to SMS. ] - i got some coding help from this forum. Bash scripting and perl sorted me out :) Be ready to do encoding UTF-8/Unicode/Western depending on where your customer is located and language he/she understands. Headache was from EMAIL to SMS but finally got it right. Fusion i used had only 1 sim card, so had to carefully code to send sms sequencially. My preference has always been kannel, its simple to configure and run. I have not had field days with gnokii though so I cannot give a healthy comparison. rgds *_______________________________________________________________We must Keep on, We can't stop here * On Thu, Dec 12, 2013 at 5:04 AM, jeremy sinja <jeysinja@gmail.com> wrote:

One of the issues I have had with kannel especially working with modems (GSM) is libusb. Sometimes the device names can change every time kannel tries to access i..e ttyUSB1 ...10. This is mainly on redhat distros and their cousins. Working with phones has been awesome since the dev name rarely changes and is Mainly the ttyACM0 ....10. This makes it possible to run many instances where both tx and rx is well channeled. But good kabambe phones are also disappearing and the current ones are terrible and a mixed breed of unreliability. So what's next? Android ... Get a cheap android phone and build an SMS app that does one simple thing. Receive and send the text to a flat db or some web service. My preference has always been kannel, its simple to configure and run. I have not had field days with gnokii though so I cannot give a healthy comparison.

Android ... Good you mentioned that, i had to switch to serial COM port where port doesn't keep changing eg ttyS0/1/2 etc @Jeremy, i think for your need GAMMU/KALKUN/Serial modem would work. You don't need to code much like i did in-order to send to and from emails I just saw the interface improved on 0.7 - check it out. Kind Regards, Wilson./

Thanks people. I will sure give you a response on how it goes. I find the Android option best because Modems are terrible especially the safcom ones, Orange modems haven't stressed me. Hope Gammu's performance is better than kannel On 12/12/13, joe mwirigi <joemwirigi@gmail.com> wrote:
