The end of the website developer?

The end of an era for web dev, just to try it out i've done a site in less than 10min complete with those things that take ages to build. Its more like blogger n wordpress though with business in mind. Great stuff I must say! On 23/09/2009, Joram Mwinamo <joram.mwinamo@gmail.com> wrote:

The thing that keeps web developers (plus many other technical guys) in profitable business is the total refusal by end users to google :-) And even when they do so, the prospect of doing it yourself might prove too intimidating... Well, the thing is with options like these, and knowing Kenyans (riverroadi business to be precise) if you dont become a high end developer and move to the next level, someone like me will be charging 30k to make websites for my relatives, friends and unsuspecting parastatals and companies.....just same way people made millions from Joomla. But the question is , how sustainable is your business when a not so sharp web developer like yours truly can make a great looking site? There is a big difference between making a website for your business and building your business into the web. Am not a web developer but I have several web based business which makes me 200k a month per site. So if you just want a website you can do without the web developer. But if you really want to transfer your business into the web then you need a very good web developer. My statement wasnt exactly literal, more like a wake up call for Web developers in kenya to move to the next level and display value beyond the "free " tools coming up online that offer high end functionality for sites which could replace the "average" kenyan web developer On Thu, Sep 24, 2009 at 8:51 AM, I. if u mean web development in Kenya died a long time ago but most skunks just wont admit it. Thanks to the rising popularity of Joomla and the commercial plugins easily downloaded for free from piratebay, now everybody is a web developer. Nearly all the local social networking websites run on Joomla or some clone something that makes them not so 'unique' as everyone can replicate the same functionality. Of course try suggesting this and you will end up with bruises... just to show how sensitive this issue can get. but lets call a spade a spade... --------------------------------------------------------------------- usbdiskintegritychecker/home/uscan_v3.5.zip?attredirects=0> Go to Website <http://sites.google.com/site/usbdiskintegritychecker/>

@Jacob, could you please provide a bit more facts to show how web dev is dead? I am a web dev, it pays the bills for me so your comments make me uneasy because I could be basing my future on a dead market :-)

according to many experts experts of all kinds are a dying breed e.g a fifteen year old dubed the online world that he was a top lawyer another made 2 millio$ on the stock exchange do we need architects, docters and yes web designers if we can get a better cheaper e alternative? Well , im not sure any profession dies, it just evolves and if you dont evolve with it, you become a dinosaur. Doctors long ago would tell you anything and you agree, nowadays you can go online and check the facts against what the doctor is telling you by pasting symptoms and it tells you what to do. In future with telemedicine maybe you will be treated cheaper by a doctor in india? Travel agents almost died when self booking online became as easy as 123, some now offer more value added services(evolution) My simple point, if you dont evolve, you die However, seeing how slow this market is to adapt, web developers will still be in business a long time even with things like spitfire and others On Thu, Sep 24, 2009 at 12:35 PM, matere lusitche <kenyabizideas@gmail.com>wrote:

@Peter..the issue here involves skills of a web developer. Content Management Systems have made it easier to for non skill based developers to develop websites who are actually doing it for the money. Over time this may have an impact on the productivity of the market. A good example is China which practically clones everything western and does not seem to to invent anything new. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Go to Website <http://sites.google.com/site/usbdiskintegritychecker/>

quite a good thread discussion here. I only have one issue, Why aren't Kenyans appreciating open source software? Yes i use Joomla! and many other PHP CMS open source appl.. but so do millions of other people in Europe and the States (i do not see anyone of them look down on the other!), at the end of the day, the web developer will still come in with his skills to personalize the site. These are tools to reduce work load not exactly a "do it yourself" instruction kit. the web dev. is like the programmer a few yrs back. using pascal, c, e.t.c, with the arrival of 4th Gen languages did these guys die or just upgrade and up there game? I'm in love with this spitfire!! can we let me make a few coins off it before we reeeaaally publisize it? lol. On 9/24/09, Jacob Ayienda <jacobayienda@gmail.com> wrote:

Yes i use Joomla! and many other PHP CMS open source appl.. but so do millions of other people in Europe and the States (i do not see anyone of them look down on the other!), at the end of the day, the web developer will still come in with his skills to personalize the site. These are tools to reduce work load not exactly a "do it yourself" instruction kit.
the web dev. is like the programmer a few yrs back. using pascal, c, e.t.c, with the arrival of 4th Gen languages did these guys die or just upgrade and up there game?
I'm in love with this spitfire!! can we let me make a few coins off it before we reeeaaally publisize it? lol.

@Peter..the issue here involves skills of a web developer. Content Management Systems have made it easier to for non skill based developers to develop websites who are actually doing it for the money. Over time this may have an impact on the productivity of the market. A good example is China which practically clones everything western and does not seem to to invent anything new.

The point I was making is that the government knows (and knew in 2005) about FOSS benefits but why does it continues purchasing proprietary almost entirely? Do not conveniently 'blame politicians' blame Kenya's matured corruption infrastructure. Why are $$ projects announced on media yet we never get to hear about their 'utilisation' on this list? Grand hope-full projects that will 'finally close local digital divides' but once their 'announcers' succeed at that PR affair, it is all eaten behind closed doors and the old 'lack of resources' problem touting returns? In fact, at some high-level meetings I have attended it has been said that, Kenyan developers lack "proper skills"!! that you are 'lousy software developers' .. recently heard of the $3 to fix that? How is it being used to 'fix you lousy skills' ;). Let's face it, corruption in Kenya stinks. On Sun, Sep 27, 2009 at 9:02 AM, Gakuru Alex <alexgakuru.lists@gmail.com> wrote:

I believe all these tools that people use like joomla plus all the other cms's are developed by "developers. The customizer is at the mercy of the developer so there is no way th developer is going any where. On Sun, Sep 27, 2009 at 11:38 AM, matere lusitche <kenyabizideas@gmail.com>wrote:

Joram you are right. The web developer has to up his game because every individual can now google and set up their websites, as such, the only logical growth path is to move up to coding, to develop the tools that make this possible. In my opinion therefore, the web designers move from setting up websites to creating template clubs, creating modules, components and building support business models around existing products like nuke, joomla, drupal etc. This in my opinion is a good thing since we now evolve to mass production with very low operating costs. And the potential of selling all over. Look at template monster, joomlaworks, rockettheme and the likes. On 9/24/09, Joram Mwinamo <joram.mwinamo@gmail.com> wrote:

Good thing is that people are not a fan of googling. Even in this forum, you will find several people who prefer asking questions here than using google. secondly, the fact that virtually every one can type hasnt put the typists out of business. of course the cost of web development and demand goes down. I dont think using Joomla or Drupal is the issue.Look at all the social sites available in the world.....facebook,myspace,tagged,HI 5,Twitter,Xing,bebo,linkedin etc They all have more are less the same features. Remember you are not selling technology, you are selling a value preposition. So you can have a very uniquely coded website and brag that you did not use Joomla or drupal but if the site does not add value in terms of a unique business preposition then its useless.Where as someone can use Joomla ...get some functionalities here and there and create a website that meets the needs of his targeted Niche and boooom he makes money. Why re-invent the wheel. As you all know Myspace was sold to NEWSCORP in 2005 for 580 MILLION USD.That did not stop Google from buying Youtube for a Billion USD.It did not stop investors from buying bebo.com for 850 million USD. And recently the sale of the polish social site nasza-klasa.pl (it means my class) a remake of classmate.com for $92 million appears in sane. But they found a niche they exploited and they have 7 million users. Always never confuse technology and value preposition.I always give an example of this bright guy from some where in central province who made, this wonderful, bulky machine which has pulleys and controlled by sms to make tea.It is all good technological adventure but its hard to package that it something valuable that someone can buy and use just to make tea.

Hi @Joram, you've said it! And pls don't ask me why kenyans are not doing this below : An immediate thing that come to mind is that those who are offering domain and mail hosted services in kenya are behind thus website design seems like some big thing, while to a certain level it is not. For those who are providing hosted services using CPanel, please look at Fantastico which will create more revenue for you than you imagined. Fantastico offers web templates that your clients can use to setup immediate sites. I've been down this road, free domains with yearly webhosting and mail is very feasible and loosely profitable. To complete my study, I even went to kenic last year with all sorts of dns and domain questions and dear Victor , though a busy professional, was a very big help. In short, I was going to go with free domains and yealry hosting plans, 2 servers, 1 dns server and CPanel with fantastico. For me challenges have gone higher, given the pace that is taking place. We are not adapting too fast. Sorry for me asking, Shida ni nini? Rgds. On Thu, Sep 24, 2009 at 8:57 AM, Joram Mwinamo <joram.mwinamo@gmail.com>wrote:
My statement wasnt exactly literal, more like a wake up call for Web developers in kenya to move to the next level and display value beyond the "free " tools coming up online that offer high end functionality for sites which could replace the "average" kenyan web developer
