I dont think using Joomla or Drupal is the issue.Look at all the social sites available in the world.....facebook,myspace,tagged,HI 5,Twitter,Xing,bebo,linkedin etc
They all have more are less the same features.
Remember you are not selling technology, you are selling a value preposition. So you can have a very uniquely coded website and brag that you did not use Joomla or drupal but if the site does not add value in terms of a unique business preposition then its useless.Where as someone can use Joomla ...get some functionalities here and there and create a website that meets the needs of his targeted Niche and boooom he makes money. Why re-invent the wheel.
As you all know Myspace was sold to NEWSCORP in 2005 for 580 MILLION USD.That did not stop Google from buying Youtube for a Billion USD.It did not stop investors from buying bebo.com for 850 million USD.
And recently the sale of the polish social site nasza-klasa.pl (it means my class) a remake of classmate.com for $92 million appears in sane. But they found a niche they exploited and they have 7 million users.
Always never confuse technology and value preposition.I always give an example of this bright guy from some where in central province who made, this wonderful, bulky machine which has pulleys and controlled by sms to make tea.It is all good technological adventure but its hard to package that it something valuable that someone can buy and use just to make tea.
Joram you are right. The web developer has to up his game because
every individual can now google and set up their websites, as such,
the only logical growth path is to move up to coding, to develop the
tools that make this possible. In my opinion therefore, the web
designers move from setting up websites to creating template clubs,
creating modules, components and building support business models
around existing products like nuke, joomla, drupal etc. This in my
opinion is a good thing since we now evolve to mass production with
very low operating costs.
And the potential of selling all over. Look at template monster,
joomlaworks, rockettheme and the likes.
