unlocked modems and the support for 3g networks

hi folks i have a safaricom modem that is unlocked and every time i connect an orange modem it disconnects after 2 minutes... is this common when a modem is unocked and does one enjoy the 3g speeds on a unlocked modem but using orange 3g lines? Guess what im asking is whether the 3g network speeds is dependednt on the modem or the subscriber network...... i have an e220 modem...will it pick 3g speeds of an orange line? regards. -- WALLACE NGENE TARURU wallacengene@gmail.com

Wallace, 3G is 3G whether in earth or heaven. Any 3G-enabled device should work with any 3G network as long as you meet the conditions that allow you to connect - SIM card, credit, etc -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

Hi Wallace, Safaricom 3G is on GSM while the Orange 3G+ is on CDMA. This means that the modem u used was connecting to the Orange GPRS. For 3G speeds on Orange, I would encourage you to buy a Huawei CDMA 2000 modem. On a different note, I would discourage unlocking modems since they are relatively affordable now. @Techi We don't unlock modems because of the price, most people here are geek and own more than one already (I have 4, 5 if you count iBurst) We do it because we have to, because its a challenge and more importantly, for the convenience. Its not fun lugging around 4 dongles! I'd rather carry 3 sim cards instead. On 28 April 2010 08:13, techi <myskunkworks@gmail.com> wrote:

@Techi : Some clarification here: Orange/Telkom Kenya/France Telecom has both GSM & CDMA networks. The 3G+ product is available on the CDMA network. The 3G network is (was?) on trial on their GSM network in selected areas. @Wallace: No amount of configuration will allow you to use a GSM device on a CDMA network or vice-versa. The limitation goes down to hardware and the processes involved before the device hooks up onto the target network. Tony.

I don't unlock because it's fun (though it is) but because it's costly having all the modems Yeah, maybe now they are relatively affordable but there are so many other expenses I have to cover with my not-so-meagre-but-not-so-great salary And since it's not illegal to unlock (or is it?) I guess it just makes it easier for me

Sheeroh unlock at your own risk.... On Wed, Apr 28, 2010 at 10:35 AM, <sheeroh@gmail.com> wrote:
