Very OT : The "List"

Generally I'm not into politics and avoid it because it's more like an endless loop or a infinite counter, however after yesterday's list ICC announcement I got wondering a few things. It seems that the delicate balance found in many developing countries is still being played out day in and day out. While many other countries in Africa are almost trashed and failed states literally, I wonder what the future holds for KE. I also wonder why award winning applications like Ushaidi play no real part in the displaced kenyans scenario where almost 650,000 kenyans were made homeless or rooted from their homes. I've also not seen any developer applications or web applications that may or would help such a situation while there are such camps in many places, the problems of resettlement and compensation. The human toll and displacement of the violence was not smaller than any war though kenya was not at war with any country. At the same time, I also read a summary of the online KACA report that they have already recovered at least Ksh 7 billion and it seems we may finally have some serious people who are going to make changes. I've also not seen any applications that would make KACA's life much easier. So web and mobile developers out there, I see an oppurtunity to bring out the screaming facts of the kenyan situation and hope that while the net is littered with many kenyan blog sites on politics and views which is a passion for many, there can be some concrete ideas on implemeting tools to better serve our situations. Some amatuer thots from me. Rgds.

I'm sorry Okech, I have to disgaree. Besides the online forums, blogs etc pls tell me of one web site or mobile application that has documented the timelines and displaced persons data for dates December 28th 2007 to March 2008 interms of the human catastrophe and whether this data is now in use to help towards eg resettlements etc. Rgds. Aki, sorry you misread my statement, I meant to spur those who know (coders) to do (code these ideas you put across) and those who don't know, to well... ./Ok3ch On Thu, Dec 16, 2010 at 10:52 AM, aki <aki275@gmail.com> wrote:

Thanks Okech for the clarification..I had lost you there for a moment. :-) Now why do I feel apps like Ushaidi are not just upto the crowd sourcing ideas is because the idea of Ushaidi was not new. During the Tsunami period, similar but non-web based apps were used and therefore Ushaidi is very limited to a one-time scenario. However, I'm not sure why the Ushaidi group never grew on the idea to a point where the app would have become a true short-term and long-term application to be used in the displaced persons situation. Anyway Ushaidi did try what they could as far I as I've seen the app/organization. There is much to be done, I hope those who are ahead on coding are looking at KE and saying something can and must be done. Asante. Skunks KE, I had another mind rush and will share this. For our displaced kenyans during the period Dec 2007-Mar2008, do you think we can create a web application. I'm already thinking of creating a domain called "Displaced Kenyan" which we can find ways to alert those out there suffering? What can the web app do? 1) Capture the data of the displaced person. They will have to go to a cyber to register phone number, upload photo, details of displacement and a verification. 2) The aim is to capture and create the displaced persons database and handover/put pressure to the relevant ministry in govt to act upon. I've read that kenyan displaced persons have also formed their own commities, so it may also help them too. 3) The displaced person, once registered will have a ticket ID when they registered and this ID will be used as confirmation that the person's state has been resolved or not. This is a start of publicy accessable data and how much the govt has done to restore the lives of those affected by things that were not their own doing. Can it work and can Skunks KE give this important project a national priority? I've just scratched the surface of the idea and I know each and everyone is busy with many things, including trying to make ends meet so no pressure but can we at least try. Or if you have a better idea, please share too. Rgds.

Sawa skunks developers, you dont need to comment on commitments or the rest on projects etc, just please keep in mind what I mentioned at the start of the thread about doing such projects that the oppurtunitites for developing such are everywhere and quite important to KE in many ways. I hope Ushaidi developers can use my web idea in some way and integrate into their system, all the better. Time for me to really get my work issues sorted so will catchup as soon as time allows. :-) Rgds.

Hi aki; The problem is usually the question of who will 'tie that bell around the cat' - we have generated many many ideas on forum; but in sooth, committing is a very hard thing; its like adding another hill on your otherwise mountainous schedule. For example,, one may create the website -- first step,,, but since its a new concept, who will go around the country to populate and keep track of these IDPs?? My proposition is - one could approach the Human Rights group; throw this idea to them, keep them involved,, develop the website; and have someone query these Rights groups for updated information to keep the website running and relevant. My 100 cents (=1 shilling)

@Ndungu, thanks and will try that avenue as soon as I have my catalogue system running. Asante sana. :-) On Thu, Dec 16, 2010 at 4:23 PM, ndungu stephen <ndungustephen@gmail.com>wrote:
