Hello All Today i had a nasty experience. Boarded a PSV vehicle on Thika road heading to town.Had my bag which contained my laptop. Then some 5 guys entered the vehicle,as they entered, they were squeezing each other to get in,little did i know that they had succeeded in opening my bag and had almost knicked my laptop before i got them red-handed and one of them dropped it then started saying that "ilikuwa imeanguka" I decided to alight the matatu at the next stage, then they also decided to alight.i waited for them to alight then i just told the conductor to go ahead all the way to town. when i reach town,i saw the same same guys alighting from another vehicle and they had knicked something from someone and he was chasing one of them.i did not know if the person managed to get them. The trick they use is this. They enter a vehicle, and then they start saying ati kuna operation ya polisi, they wait for people to move and check if there valuables are ok,then they will try to move around while trying opening unsuspecting people bags. I believe they operate on Thika road mostly. People beware! and take care of your valuables.I am told that this is a common trend on Thika road.who knows where else it may be heading to. Just wanted to inform my fellow people to be aware of such tricks. Regards Cynthia

Hi Cynthia, This type of crooks are on almost all routes. When you get into a matatu, you need to be extra vigilant! Hold what is valuable to you close to your chest. On 13 May 2014 17:49, Cynthia Wahome <cwahome@jambo.co.ke> wrote:

Cynthia this is so sad to hear. This is the very very thing that happened to me almost a year ago between UON roundabout and westlands roundabout. I had a nasty punch up with them before getting my laptop back and to my rescue the cops came around and they were taken to Kileleshwa police station. We need plain clothed cops to operate on these routes and help save unsuspecting passengers. This guys have evolved, they will even snatch your phone with the window closed. This thieves operate in a group, while in traffic, someone walks by hitting your side mirror "accidentally", this prompts you to lower your window to adjust the mirror, while at it, someone else distracts you by tapping the opposite window. This will make you turn and the same person who hit your side mirror will attempt to grab any valuable from you. Yes it happens when you least expect, along city stadium. In-vehicle surveillance has many uses. In Russia, simple dash-cams are very popular but for different reasons; to capture video evidence of any idiot-in-chief on the crazy roads (both road users and traffic authorities) Locally, it shouldn't be costly to install one, legislation notwithstanding : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pCuQNgENQ8 Tony.

I get puzzled by our preoccupation with CCTV, even after Ksh. 400 million from your payslips was used to purchase some which you see around Nairobi. Will CCTV cameras investigate crimes, pursue suspects, arrest them, present them before a court and prove they are guilty of a crime? Most crimes in Nairobi involve theft of a mobile device which can be tracked, but no, no one bothers. Our modus operandi is rounding up of immigrants and Somalis, banning of tinted windows, persecution of bus conductors and drivers for failure to stop crimes. You get the drift, even with police forces in other countries having set what are good practices in crime reduction, we prefer to use bizarre directives. In short, guys, you are on your own. The state long ago abdicated its role to fight crime. On Tuesday, 13 May 2014, Tony Likhanga <tlikhanga@gmail.com> wrote:

@Dennis, look at it from the deterrence point of view. If the state abdicated on its roles, what little contribution can you make? I may not succeed in bringing the bad guys to book, but I may just discourage the vice. CCTVs have been there since when pluto was a planet, but should their use be inadmissible to authorities, you can leverage on their less costly alternatives and twist their use into interesting initiatives especially on emerging media - 'crowd-sourcing deterrence'. When you are an afflicted party, any form of evidence is good evidence. It builds up on your claims apart from offering some psychological score of having done your part. Ask that guy who's chasing some payment for services offered about his sentiments on evidence to prop up his case. (BTW, if he's reading this, in legal circles, there's a tool that looks handy on paper : *"Demand Letter"* ) *Samples :* - Remember Charles Kungu and his office laptop theft case<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZCxLyKeXFE>? What if you happened to recognize the culprit in the video. - Then there was also the case of a gang of lady thieves<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ovjARZ7Yyw>who eventually got caught. - A personal favourite is the case of Makena Onjerika on MPESA fraud<http://www.whatifkenya.com/mpesa-to-a-wrong-number/>. (She even went on to start an active facebook group) - Some people swear by the buyer beware facebook group<https://www.facebook.com/groups/528794620491396/> You just never know what impact social groupings like KOT may come in handy. Ngong road is also another hot spot.Hizi compliant and happens right before you fika Kenyatta Hospital. This guy stands and says "Johnny si hapa ndio wale makarao hukuwa.Fungeni mishipi" That statment is actually a signal to alert the other thugs "twendeni.kazi tuibie hawa majamaa". A lady unfortunately lost her laptop and realized it akiwa Adams. On May 13, 2014 5:51 PM, "Cynthia Wahome" <cwahome@jambo.co.ke> wrote:
