IIEC received a donation of 250 Blackberries mobile phones

to help commissioners around the country communicate more effectively. The phones, which were provided with a full service package and donated by the US government, were to ensure that personnel had access to communicating with headquarters from any location in the country and with the build in global positioning system (GPS) be able to map all IIEC registration and polling locations throughout the country. "These phones will vastly improve the ability of the IIEC to conduct its work," said Rene Meza, Zain Kenya CEO during the handing over of the phones. Zain Kenya sourced the Blackberries for the US government donation. In the recent voters' registration around the country IIEC introduced electronic voter registration (EVR) in nine constituencies across the country. The EVR captured more details including the voter picture, thumb print and all critical voter data. Mr Andrew Limo, IIEC's public relations officer said that ideally the use of electronic systems should be incremental and not a big bang implementation that is why it was starting with voter registration as the body explored options of using it in voting ( source is BD ) Question : What system is the blackberry sending its data to and did the commisioners receive training to use the devices? Was the system developed locally or outsorced? Share your thots. Rgds

OK why black berries ...they are damn expensive and i think there are other platforms (cheaper) that can get the job done (on the paranoia side) plus i don't trust US government with blackberry technology i.e. in my view unless you are running blackberry servers a black berry is just another phone On Wed, Jul 14, 2010 at 11:24 PM, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

Why Blackberry? Because RIM is a USA based company. The involvement of USA is beyond the scope of this forum and is being covered in the dailies. In short, USA government agencies default to the Black Berry for enterprise communication and it makes sense if the government was to donate them somewhere. As for being expensive, that is relative... If they decided to donate vehicles, they would donate Chryslers, Fords or some other American Brand.

Guess am as ignorant as the Americans now,

well i guess my point is that they are using a sledge hammer to kill an ant ...which raises eyebrows (for me) else they would have also brought the black berry servers and rip the benefits of the device....once again my point of view On Fri, Jul 16, 2010 at 12:00 PM, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

And I always thought RIM was Canadian, based in Wateloo. Anyway, no difference between Canada and USA I guess.

I view it a bit differently A govt donates blackberries to another govt and you take them with glee.......im perplexed! The same govt that donated them was questioning how its own president can use a blackberry because of its security vulnerabilities.!!! boy oh boy... Plus i dont think the kenyan govt cannot afford 250 blackberrys....should I list corruption scandals or the 26 billion that was returned to treasury? If they dont see the need for it, then it wont be used. thats my experience with donations. It only builds complacency when its not needed On Fri, Jul 16, 2010 at 8:33 AM, geoffrey gitagia <ggitagia@gmail.com>wrote:
