Thought this was briefly before Exxon ended the day higher? What amazes me is that 1 month ago, Exxon was worth $50billion more than Apple, and they have to even released the next gen iPhone, iPods & iPads. ./Ok3ch On Thu, Aug 11, 2011 at 4:00 PM, David Kiania | Asentric Consulting Ltd <kianiadee@gmail.com> wrote:

My only question is sustainability... Microsoft was in this position in the 90's. Cisco in the last decade. What's to prevent another 'startup' from being at the top in 2020? How can Apple ensure that like IBM, it's still a valuable stock in 2100? On Thu, Aug 11, 2011 at 4:06 PM, Okechukwu <okechukwu@gmail.com> wrote:

No, company will ever attain Market cap leadership ad infinitum, it's like 100M race sprinters they come and go as well. Phares, neither Microsoft nor Cisco ever had the highest Market Cap, oil companies and GE have dominated this. The message right now is clear ipod, ipad, itunes are the new oil ;-) Kiania D On Thu, Aug 11, 2011 at 4:30 PM, Okechukwu <okechukwu@gmail.com> wrote:

I am not sure whether IBM or Microsoft where once the greates companies by market capitalization no matter how successful they have been. But Apple is today (Market Caps in USD - AAPL: 337.2B, XOM: 330.8B, MSFT: 202.8B USD,CSCO: 75.53B, DELL: 25.76B, IBM: 194.1B, GOOG: 177.3B) and nothing beats the present. This year Apple will be more profitable than IBM and Microsoft, while having higher revenues than MSFT. The reign at the to will not last forever, but given the history of where Apple is coming from, it is not a small achievement. And since they are still growing and creating new markets which did not even exists, they will be on top for a long time to come. They have a new iPhone and iPad lined up this year, plus they are curtailing existing markets for Samsung and Android. There is talk of them hitting 1 Trillion USD in Market Cap before end of next year.

Philip, That's a splendid analysis and I agree with you on all counts except the last one. Samsung will win this one. By filling an injunction, Apple validates Galaxy tab 10.1 as the true competitor to the ipad and has apple scared spitless. Remember this is only an injunction not a final ruling, the onus is on Apple to prove that the Tab infringes on the design patent. I wish them well. My two cents Kiania D On Thu, Aug 11, 2011 at 4:41 PM, Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:

They will get into the tech cycle - (phase 1)A cycle where a company grows big cause consumers love the companies products. In phase 2, the company goes ahead of the consumer and starts developing what they think consumers will love. Consumers love the new innovations even loving the company more In phase 3 it starts to get irritating, the company is no longer making what the consumer wants, and has grown very arrogant that it doesn't want to listen to anything. Believes that it knows the market and has led it for xx years hence the rest are nay sayers. in phase 4, consumers have discovered a competitor that is in phase 1, and start moving to it. The large company develops into a fomer ghost of itself.

The only problem I see for Apple shareholders is the fact that right now Apple = Steve Jobs I am not confident that whoever will takeover from him will carry on his bulldozing ways as to direction of products. But then again comparing to the local scene, Bob Collymore has handled Safaricom rather well so maybe this will be the Apple Decade. The question is - what is the consumer trend ? Currently, Apple is doing well releasing the iPhone 4 and the iPad 2.0 -- But once all the clients who need these products have got them - what next for Apple, say next year ? Or two years from now ? Because unlike women clothing; an electronic piece is for keeps - especially an expensive one like Apple products - unless its lost or damaged ! The App-Store is currently their best and probably sustainable bet...

Stephen, I think you don't seem to get the consumer electronics market. First of all, there will always be a new generation of consumers to create new demand. Then there is the replacement cycle by existing consumers, and for iDevices, this will tend to be 2 or 3 years. A lot of iPhone 3GS users will be replacing ther devices with iPhone 5 and also adding on iPads. Then there is also a new category of users attracted to the iDevices like iPods who will purchase iPhones, iPads and Macs. Then there is the AppStore world, which is a growing revenue source. There is Apple TV offering purchase or rent of movies and TV programs. The iTunes Music store is currently the largest retailer of music, and this week Walmart pulled out of digital music market, meaning that iTunes will continue to grow and shallow smaller competitors. The only remaining credible competitor for Apple in the digital music distribution is Amazon. Then the iCloud. A lot of potential. Apple may also enter the home electronics market with a real Apple TV. Other markets like in vehicle systems for entertainment and navigation are still undeveloped, this is a potential area for Apple So you see Stephen, they cycle will tend to repeat itself.

@ Phillip well put - i will need to think about this and mabbe wait until next year to confirm that Apple will top the charts again (even though its for a few hours like it happened this time)
