KCB ATM/Debit Card (Visa Electron) is being rejected during online purchases

Hi Guys, Is there anyone on the list who uses his/her KCB ATM/Debit Card (Visa Electron) for online purchases? I have just acquired one after opening a bankika account and I was told that I can use it online, but so far it has been rejected on websites that even accept Visa Electron debit cards... Does KCB have to activate something on their side so that the debit card can be used online? Claire.

Hello Claire, But I believe it does online and furthermore I believe this topic has been discussed before. Please have a look at the archive.

Mine has never failed, its so effective for me. On Mon, May 24, 2010 at 2:49 PM, Claire Njoki <clairenjoki@gmail.com> wrote:

Call KCB CardCentre and they will sort you out. Sometimes it is some authorizationt they have to do from their end.

Thanks Philip & Thomas... I'll do that. On 5/24/10, Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:

To be safe go back to KCB and apply for a Pre-Paid card. It works just like a credit card but is on pre-pay. Go there with 1K, + ID On 5/24/10, Claire Njoki <clairenjoki@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi Guys, Here's a quick update on this issue. I talked to the KCB card centre and they have informed me that they have stopped allowing use of the VISA Electron ATM/Debit Card for internet purchases. However, they said I can acquire their prepaid card to perform the same. Claire. On 5/24/10, David Kandie <dkipkulei@gmail.com> wrote:

I have just noticed most banks are going that way of not allowing Visa Electron Debit Cards for internet payment. Started with Standard Chartered, now it is KCB. I think this is mediocre at best. I think it should me made illegal (by the CCK of Banking Industry) for Banks to do this while at the same time hawking their more expensive Credit Cards. I understand their security concerns but the same applies to all Credit/Debit cards. And the fact that they simply do that without bothering to inform their clients is even more irritating.

@Robert The KCB Prepaid card costs 100bob a month. Got it when it was "free" then they changed the terms and started charging the 100bob and ditched it. On Thu, May 27, 2010 at 10:14 AM, Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:

If I was Safaricom, now that I am big with huge revenues, I would start my own Visa Card tied to your mPesa balance. That way you can still use mPESA to pay bills online and at check out in most supermarkets. And I would make a lot of money while doing it. I would simply make a deal with Visa to give me a cut of their fees, then go to the dealers and also make a deal with them to give me a cut of their fees. And while I am doing it, I will charge the users mPESA account some amount for the transaction. When I am finished, I will go to MasterCard and show them how brilliant my idea is, and I will have more MasterCard branded mPESA cards. And I will talk to Paypal, to ask them to allow people to send money from abroad to my mPESA Visa and MasterCard cards. And will take a cut of the proceeds. Then I will talk to KRA, and organizations will be required to pay all taxes with mPESA, and so will be payments to HELB. And all money for the new counties to be created will be disbursed through county mPESA account same with all money for free primary and secondary school education. And I will be big. And everyone will be happy.

You'll need 1k upfront plus a copy of your ID, it'll also cost you 100 per month which you cannot pay upfront. The card will take 7 days to be "made" after which you can deposit cash in there and you are good to go.
If you use the kencom branch of KCB, the desk you are looking for is the the fourth one along the wall, with the customer care manager's desk being the first one. The terms and conditions are many, written in really fine print, kinda like they were written not to be read.

Fellow skunks, I have used kcb debit prepaid debit card the last 4 years online. Its very ok for me. The card is only rejected if you have no cash or its on a site hosted in particular asian countries- and you can request KCB you need to use the card on that site and the card is enabled on that website Martin S.
