EABL, EAO, Safaricom and now Wananchi, what is the common denominator? Foreign CEO's! Is there a death of local talent?

EABL is a poor example. Gerald Mahinda was a very successful CEO On Thu, Sep 23, 2010 at 6:53 PM, Joseph McDonald <mcdonaldoj@gmail.com>wrote:

Guys, I have for the last 1 year been living in a country where 93% of CEOs for all major corporates are foreigners. Over 40% of the professional community here is also foreign. David. On 9/23/10, Rad! <conradakunga@gmail.com> wrote:

Its not that they are "foreign" its that companies want to hire people with regional experience....working outside your home country is a huge plus if you ever want to be CEO of a company.

Regarding EABL and Wananchi - their new bosses are group CEOs which as John said would need people with experience working outside your home country. (Note to self: Work outside the country as a big shot to become a CEO :) ) -- Josiah Mugambi On Thu, Sep 23, 2010 at 7:30 PM, John Maina <mwasjunior@gmail.com> wrote:

I don't buy this for one second, all their second line managers Finance, Marketing HR, Engineering, Sales, Commercial you name it are all local. Board members are also 90-95% local. There are several Kenyan's working with functional experience that should be considered. Remember how Gareth George run down KCB and needed Martin Oduor Otieno to fix, Barclays, Standard Chartered, KQ the list goes on have local leadership have they gone under? I want to be plain here, we tend to think accent and much touted "foreign" exposure and little "toner" is what it takes. If I was not wrong there was an agreement that MJ would handover to a local person how things change overnight. Kiania On Thu, Sep 23, 2010 at 9:38 PM, Josiah Mugambi <jmugambi@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi Joseph, In some instances, foreign CEOs come with change of ownership. It can be an agreement with the investor which is captured in the acquisition contract. Just look at Virtual City for inspiration and probably you may end up as a local CEO for a local company which you own. Micheal Macharia from Seven Seas is also a good source of inspiration. Regards. Joe; Tembea na majira. Your eyes are only fixed on the free space on a glass thats more than 7/8 full. Try to see that the 1/8 empty is mostly due to complex investor agreements. That doesnt change unless you change investment agreements themselves. We have ample talent in Kenya. Read widely and you will realize more Kenyans bring change out there than even here in Kenya. No more comments. Peter On Fri, Sep 24, 2010 at 8:29 AM, techi <myskunkworks@gmail.com> wrote:

Don't wait for success; hunt it down like there's no tomorrow.

The quality of leadership we have in the country is poor. The so called young leaders do not want to obtain knowledge from enriching books. Instead we have relied on TV and other traditional media to be the only source of information for the decisions we make. That is why we are ending up with Gang leaders, sect leaders, drug dealers etc as being the opinion shaper of these country. We need to reverse this trend and m open to suggestions. martin chege, again, i think u completely missed the point

There is plenty of local talent I agree.Maybe our local corporate leaders and managers should try and write biographies/or management books to explain the challenges and their experiences. This will be very inspirational and it will help young leaders On Thu, Sep 23, 2010 at 6:53 PM, Joseph McDonald <mcdonaldoj@gmail.com>wrote:
