talk about 1 million laptops?

Hi guys, Could I try and get PS Ndemo to talk to us on "how-to" get one of those 1 million laptops stimulus? http://www.businessdailyafrica.com/Company%20Industry/-/539550/628254/-/u8x1... just an interest gauge here.... regards, Alex

Yea.. this is good; bet Alex has to come up with something nice... How much possible is it for such a good initiative to be wasted? But having a relevant community like Skunkworks taking it up might be all the start that's needed. On 7/28/09, Gakuru Alex <alexgakuru.lists@gmail.com> wrote:

At this age where handheld devices are becoming the preferred computing device for majority of the population I'd prefer a 1 million *smartphone*campaing. My views are: - That in the the cities, most guys will prefer laptop to the mobile phone. True. but there is only so much you can do with a laptop if you are not a developer or an IT person. Majority of the population is the non-IT people. - That in the rural areas guys would prefer a smart mobile to a laptop beacause. - It can serve as a substitute for several lacking infrastructures and services. - It's convenience and ease of use. Easy to learn how to access and use new functionality - And the most important for everybody is that mobile services are not dependent on any kind of physical addressing scheme (i.e physical adress). Mimano, I beg to disagree. If you have a smart phone, you are primarily a client, using services and products created by others. However, if you have a laptop, you can create products and services which can then be sold to other 'clients'. I would imagine that the 1 million laptops are not meant to be acquired then stashed in the house for the occasional movie or gaming session, but they are meant to be a stimulus to grow the ICT industry. If my assumption is correct, then the people who would benefit most from these laptops are those in the ICT or related industries. Further building upon that assumption, then skunks would not be the most ideal people to have those laptops because, and i stand to be corrected, a majority of skunks have at least one PC or laptop at their disposal. Therefore, to conclude my assumption, the people who would benefit most from laptops are ICT students in the colleges, universities and high schools. @Mimamo, If the laptops are meant for the those in IT related field, there's no much impact; already they're good to go. They have access to the internet for instance and they don't need a stimulus as such (except they'll need to benefit just like any other Kenyan); But if we keep saying that ICT is for everyone, which is how it will impact the economy as intended, then there is need to take PC to the home; I think this stimulus is meant to do this. Otherwise this will not naturally happen. Concerning hand held, I think a general user - not techie - might be overwhelmed by the functionality of the device and the objective will not be met. Keeping it simple to me is more effective. On Wed, Jul 29, 2009 at 10:45 AM, Peter Karunyu<pkarunyu@gmail.com> wrote:

Why not 2-million desktops ? they are easier to upgrade, cheaper to fix, and less likely to get stolen.

Desktops, not until you are operating from 4 different locations and moving your workspace gives you hell. a desktop is best left for your desk at work and for home entertainment. I guess there is a criterion for disbursing these laptops. My assumption is, this initiative is a pilot project. My greatest concern is how will the monitoring of the use of the machines be done? On 29/07/2009, Rad! <conradakunga@gmail.com> wrote:

My essential question is are there a million people who already have the skills to be able to utilize the laptops? And are these the people we are targeting? Will the laptops come with training software? In order for the promotion to be beneficial it must lead to increased incomes for the users, which requires skills.
Does anyone know the answers to these questions?

Yes! governance questions skunks ought to candidly pose to Bwana PS. True, we need laptops, desktops, mobile phones, power, water, penicillin and pentium -- the works! but we got to start somewhere with something. So, do we invite Dr. Ndemo for the talk or what? Alex

Of course, invite him for a talk, Alex! On 29/07/2009, Gakuru Alex <alexgakuru.lists@gmail.com> wrote:

With power rationing at best, or no power at worst, desktops would quickly turn to expensive scrap metal. Regarding desktops being cheaper to fix, that may be the case today but it can be argued that a jua-kali ecosystem of laptop specialists will emerge in the same way that TVs and all manner of electronics are catered for by the informal sector. Why not 2-million desktops ? they are easier to upgrade, cheaper to fix, and less likely to get stolen. _______________________________________________ Skunkworks mailing list Skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke http://lists.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/skunkworks Other services @ http://my.co.ke Other lists ------------- Announce: http://lists.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/skunkworks-announce Science: http://lists.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/science kazi: http://lists.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/admin/kazi/general

I am still yet to undestand how 1 million laptops will stimulate the economy.......there wold have been other measures that would have immediate effect like scraping excise tax and VAT on airtime....that will surely make people call more....oohh they are also building 10 fishponds per constituency or so i heard.... .....how the laptops will stimulate the economy sielewi......

For logistical purposes, how many would be interested in attending? It would be very helpful at this point in time. Alex On Thu, Jul 30, 2009 at 11:49 AM, saich<saiched@gmail.com> wrote:
