Hey guys, Which UPSes do you use at home? My area has started experiencing regular blackouts, just about the time I wanted to setup a small home office... I would appreciate all your recommendations

Hi Peter, Purely depends on what Equipment you want the UPS to cover and of course how long. On Wed, Jan 13, 2016 at 2:57 PM, Peter Karunyu via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Peter, We have a variety; Mecer, APC, Sollate, etc For me, Sollatek is the best UPS, comes with a 24 month electonic & 6 month battery warranty. Don't think there is a better offer than that. There is 600, 800, 1000,.........VA, depending the power you want it to support? Bravo

Try work out btwn ups and inverter evaluate the cost benefit and settle for one. To me an inverter is a better solution if you have space for the batteries. Oliver On Jan 13, 2016 3:59 PM, "Riggson87 via skunkworks" < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

If it is just for a PC, and for 10 minutes or so - just to save stuff and shut down - get a UPS. Line interactive type - size in VA should be twice the power rating of the PC PSU in Watts, plus 20% So - if your PC is 250W, then a 600VA (or larger) line interactive UPS would be correct. If you want extended runtime, then an inverter/charger plus batteries is the way to go. Trace is good, and Chloride/Exide solar batteries are a good medium price solution. Beware of putting batteries in parallel - you can easily end up with an explosion as the batteries age. Better to get bigger capacity batteries - in series, up to the required voltage. Chloride has a 12V 200Ah battery which I think is their largest, for about 35k On 14/01/2016, Oliver Ndegwa via skunkworks <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Get an inverter-charger with a 12v battery. A sufficient combination will give you 8-10hrs of lighting, laptop and even TV. On Jan 14, 2016 6:00 AM, "Tony White via skunkworks" < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

^ what he said. If you only want to backup a few items (TV + lights only) etc then a UPS will work. If you want to backup almost the entire house then you'll probably need an inverter. Tip. Don't skimp on batteries, a good set of batteries will serve you a long while. The cheap ones will last a year or so and you'll have replace them. Seen some batteries that are still in use that were bought in 2007. Regards, John K. On 14 January 2016 at 09:00, awatila--- via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Hi peter, We have this solution that can run 12 hours after power balck out. This will cost you KSH 80,000 Regards Martin From: Peter Karunyu via skunkworks [mailto:skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke] Sent: Wednesday, January 13, 2016 2:57 PM To: Skunkworks forum Subject: [Skunkworks] Home UPS advice Hey guys, Which UPSes do you use at home? Thanks guys for the information. The solution will be just for one Macbook, a printer and charging a phone. It will NOT be for lights (Macbook backlight, but do I say :-), nor for TV or any other household appliances. 80k is a little ways out of my budget range, so I assume an UPS. So APC, EATON and Sollatek. Is there a rough guide I can use to know which one I need between 600, 800 or 1000? Also, I wouldn't mind knowing the prices of each On Thu, Jan 14, 2016 at 9:51 AM, Martin Mugambi <martinmugambi07@gmail.com> wrote:
