^ what he said. If you only want to backup a few items (TV + lights only) etc then a UPS will work. If you want to backup almost the entire house then you'll probably need an inverter.

Tip.
Don't skimp on batteries, a good set of batteries will serve you a long while. The cheap ones will last a year or so and you'll have replace them. Seen some batteries that are still in use that were bought in 2007.
