why are we paying taxes?

I don't know why i'm paying taxes when my money is going to : 1. Politician's bellies 2. Protecting and harboring criminals 3. Not taking care of our people. Current case the North Kenyans. 4. Getting ready to bargain for the wrong doing politicians over protecting Kenyans. Why is there even a question of whether to pay for the six guilty politicians to stay safe in Kenya over helping the tens of thousands in Northern Kenya? If they aren't guilty, let them go. I don't mind my taxes being used for them going to the hague, but WTF? we're paying 4.7Billion shillings so that they don't go? NO! I will not sit back anymore. There will have to be action. -- ...and I shall shed my light over dark evil. For the dark things cannot stand the light.

On the good side, at least they are succeeding in rubbing the public the wrong way, just like some Tunisan found out the other day. Problem is when "my community" will realize that the whole community was never part of "my community" and that a few people hoarding billions in their bank accounts does not result in good infrastructure , schools , hospitals , security et al Hey, this list is mean to be non -political, maybe Wathcman is trolling...

The things is - Kenyans have this "mtu yetu" attitude, which makes them so divided that they can never speak with one voice. In Kenya, the moment someone is made to face action for his/her deeds, it is quickly translated in "we are being finished". It's what I call negative ethnicity. Thus we cannot stand up and tell the govt not to abuse our tax money. They know Kenyans can't do this. Kenyan's cannot wake up one day like they did in Philipines or Tunisia. You see, in those places, they don't have "tribes" as we know it here... You say there will have to be action? Uta do?? The govt also stares you in the face and asks "Uta do?" the problem with Kenyans in general is our short term momory, and reactionary tendencies. When its hot, we complain, after a week, we stop thinking and begin complaining about the next thing. If only we had a credible consumer rights organization... By the way of your tax (Ksh 7575 per quarter). Ksh 12 will go to support Muthaura & Ali if all goes as planned. Well I have thought over his issue like a million times and what surprises me is our level of stupidity and it seems theres nothing much anyone can do about it. Our stupid minds are addicted to running away from enlightenment, until our stupidity consumes us. And it will be too late then to discover how stupid we were. Nobody wants to sacrifice anything and yet everyone wants everything for themselves. There is complete lack of order in everything that is done. Every deal has its dark end. A govt that does nothing about anything until its too late and everyone(and by everyone here I mean, non politicians) has suffered enough. The average Kenyan no longer views the govt as an asset but as a liability. No Kenyan in his real sense should really boast about being Kenyan. The majority of population is still struggling to cater for their BASIC needs. Even bushmen were actually better in that field then we currently are. I can go on forever but I just discovered something, I'm thinking about it all over again. I try my best to not think about it nowadays. I am making an open request here. A protest. But a different on. Where we are with our children, their children where applicable and other's children. In the streets of Nairobi for the refusal of gov't funding the 6. Like they had in the 60's and 70's. @ Watchman / Dennis Unfortunately, (and this is my frustration - income earning/job holding Kenyans are very very very complacent) and like to avoid what we call "getting into trouble" for their own "safety and the convenience of self and family" even when they know they are right. KENYA TRAFFIC POLICE: Case and point, I was doing between 70-80km on the Nakuru-Naivasha highway when I was pulled along side 10 other Kenyans for "overspeeding" , I politely explained to the arresting junior officers that I cannot afford to do the 120km/hr they had pinned on me; and I told them to show me that speed... They took me to their "leader" who was making Kenyans line up on a receipt book to pay "fines" ;; the leader turned out to be a very rude man and he shouted at me to shut up and put "5000 shillings on that book, write my name and go and explain my case to the judge" I tried to explain why i cannot do speeds above 100km/hr with my car; but the big stomach guy could not believe I was arguing with him; and he got angrier, shoutier, bordering on dangerous. I refused to back down.. and I said I am not giving him 5000 shillings !! I told him to show me the "overspeeding" they were accusing me off; and he shouted that he is the authority and he knows what he is saying and with that (they had guns) they took away my insurance and license. Other "nice" kenyans witnessing this scene quickly "paid" to avoid trouble. I managed to convince some retired officer who was driving behind me that we had better go all the way with this case. We said we had rather pay 20,000/- shillings on a court of law (cos one will always be found guilty) rather than give the shouting angry man who was obviously looking for January school fees... He was looking for January school fees because legally, the cash bail is Ksh. 3000; and as we later found out, the policemen were there illegally and out of their area of jurisdiction; they had even come with their own private cars (these cops were very well paid [?]) -To cut the story short; the remaining 'niice' kenyans bribed their way out before we got to the nearest Gilgil police cells. -Me and the retired government agent found ourselves in a smelly police cell (the retired government agent got himself a lawyer) -My folks made a few calls to some government people and the Police Unit ran away -Paid 3000/- for bail; which was refunded a few days latter The funny thing is that my folks got mad at me for arguing my case; they said it was better to bribe the police officers and avoid "inconvenience"... But if the two of us dint take a stand, how many more Kenyans could have continued being exhorted on those Highway spots on that first week of January ? *NOW IN A PARALLEL KENYAN UNIVERSE:* All the 30+ arrested Kenyans could have challenged the police speed guns and insisted to see their speed (taking into account the doppler effect of an approaching object and taking into account the minimum braking speed within 50m from the speed gun holding cop) We could have all not given "fines" and we could have ended in the Gilgil police cells - and paid 3000/- bail, and appeared in a court of law; and the police men would get nothing ! All taxes, fines would go to the government. And if we persisted with this pattern; policemen would never extort road side bribes, because they would get nothing !

We're lucky as Skunkers (and other educated Kenyans) to have the internet, we should use this as a new frontier now that it's clear that the mass media is being influenced, recently citing how they edited out Lumumba saying that the A.G. can frustrate his efforts at will.
3000; and as we later found out, the policemen were there illegally and out of their area of jurisdiction; they had even come with their own private cars (these cops were very well paid [?])
-To cut the story short; the remaining 'niice' kenyans bribed their way out before we got to the nearest Gilgil police cells. -Me and the retired government agent found ourselves in a smelly police cell (the retired government agent got himself a lawyer) -My folks made a few calls to some government people and the Police Unit ran away -Paid 3000/- for bail; which was refunded a few days latter
The funny thing is that my folks got mad at me for arguing my case; they said it was better to bribe the police officers and avoid "inconvenience"... But if the two of us dint take a stand, how many more Kenyans could have continued being exhorted on those Highway spots on that first week of January ?
*NOW IN A PARALLEL KENYAN UNIVERSE:*
All the 30+ arrested Kenyans could have challenged the police speed guns and insisted to see their speed (taking into account the doppler effect of an approaching object and taking into account the minimum braking speed within 50m from the speed gun holding cop)
We could have all not given "fines" and we could have ended in the Gilgil police cells - and paid 3000/- bail, and appeared in a court of law; and the police men would get nothing ! All taxes, fines would go to the government.
And if we persisted with this pattern; policemen would never extort road side bribes, because they would get nothing !

Now you are talking guys. Taking to the streets isn't really gonna do anything unless you are talking about a revolution (which if so should sound like a whisper and not shouted out loud here). The government system we have is like a blackmail, the moment you are tricked into letting them in power, they will make use of the police force to molest protesters and nothing will happen after that. But information is power. This is not Martin Luther's era. During those errors, taking to the streets worked because there was physical oppression and a physical uprising would suffice. But what we have here is a psychological torment that can only be dealt with psychologically. They gave us impotent democracy (But it isn't really impotent, we make it impotent by firing blanks when we are given the chance to in the name of trying to get everything for ourselves stupidly and in an uninformed manner) The local media is the first agent to the thriving of their oppression. The media as always is looking for bad stories and they can actually do stuff to make things worse to make more sales. You see, trying to get so much(everything for themselves) at the sacrifice of citizens. On Sun, Jan 16, 2011 at 5:24 PM, Collins Areba <castorkenya@gmail.com>wrote:

I've always wanted to do something about all these. I have a plan, but it might take me close to 30 years to finalize, but until then I will still continue to execute my plan while joining any other Kenya who seriously want a stop to all these nascence. ./Ok3ch On Sun, Jan 16, 2011 at 5:48 PM, Collins Areba <castorkenya@gmail.com>wrote:

Stephen, I so totally feel your story. Happened to me too on the 3rd of January, being arrested by cops who are not withing their jurisdiction. And the story ends the same way. Angry big bellied man barking at you expecting you to cower in fear. Personally, I feel this is a forum which has the power to influence any Govt body. We have managed to pull in big players in the IT industry and am sure with the same zeal and focus we can make a difference. Am also tired of being a victim of autocratic rule and seeing no value of my tax money. Am up in arms on this one. -ty On Tue, Jan 18, 2011 at 10:28 PM, Watchman <skunkingrahim@gmail.com> wrote:

@Judy et. al Thanks for the link http://www.petitiononline.com/811976/petition.html While signing the online petition is as noble as it gets, I have a concern about publishing of the personal info on the site. Greetings Brothers and Sisters, I've managed to start looking at a number of things however the most complicated process i've been trying to follow up on is this. Considering i've been spending approximately 2 - 300K a year on Taxes, it's beginning to become weary when i hear or read that certain people have misused the money. I tried to understand it but couldn't, I thought i was the only one frustrated seeing as how i didn't hear anyone else "Voice" their opinions. Fear maybe, but when asking on a one to one, there's always something to say. So, i thought it out, we have a crisis at the moment, the drought in Baringo killing off citizens. I'd like to know if you as skunks are aware of or can get in touch with someone who would be able to assist with this. Instead of me paying my taxes to the gov't, i use my taxes to work on a project that does two things. 1. Short term termination of drought 2. Long term assistance to the community so that it doesn't recur. I need Legal assistance and once the formalities have been pulled through, there should be a process whereby this can be justified. So my question to you is this: Do you know who can help me find out if we can legalize a direct process of interjection considering after about 3 weeks of this nonsense, there's still daily news of just dying people. I'm sure a lot more Kenyans will sit with this if there is an actual process of direct participation as opposed to going through waiting for things to happen. And something i found disgusting. approx Ksh 845Million saved last year as MP's and Gov't officials drove smaller cars.* WTF?* watchman. @Watchman This is the frustrating thing about our "Judiciary" and "Law enforcement" So there is a guy 'Politician' who was hunted by Lumumba and his team and it emerged that his hand has always been involved in one embezzlement or the other in Kenyan History.. And everybody is like "finally, some proof, some bravery, some justice" And 2 weeks later, the President visits the named Politician's home area, practically holding hands and saying "they/he should be forgiven" or something to that effect.. This completely undermined the work done by revolutionaries like Lumumba, and it goes to show that the whole Judiciary system is an Ant, struggling under the Elite's thumbs. And you know what? Follow some low profile cases and compare with "high profile" cases brought to court.. You will be surprised to hear that court systems for Criminal offenses are not the same... There are some courts where you are not expected to say "not guilty" and your lawyer is just a prop. If you say "not guilty" you are thrown in remand until the day your "hardheadedness" accepts a guilty plea. Then we have the high profile ones, the ones that appear on TV charging "high profile" cases. These ones follow the right sequence as we see on American law series. And the accused is usually "innocent until proven guilty" and the lawyer actually presents his clients case,, and many usually get out on "lack of enough proof or evidence". So that is the short summary of our Judicial System. I have tried in the past to sue a company that had obviuosly conned us; You can't believe how powerless Lawyers are in this system :) Woe unto you if you are shikwad for incitement (or any other charge in which you are innocent) and you try to get a lawyer to fight your case :) Sent from my iPhone On Feb 12, 2011, at 1:42 PM, Watchman <skunkingrahim@gmail.com> wrote:

And it has been plain and simple that this is the way things go. It is with this in mind that i don't hide my ideas here. I would like to know if it is at all possible to do what i am asking. To see if we can work out a different system or if there is a way.. meek as it may be to straighten out the current one. Watchman. This is the frustrating thing about our "Judiciary" and "Law enforcement"
So there is a guy 'Politician' who was hunted by Lumumba and his team and it emerged that his hand has always been involved in one embezzlement or the other in Kenyan History..
And everybody is like "finally, some proof, some bravery, some justice"
And 2 weeks later, the President visits the named Politician's home area, practically holding hands and saying "they/he should be forgiven" or something to that effect..
I have tried in the past to sue a company that had obviuosly conned us; You can't believe how powerless Lawyers are in this system :)
Woe unto you if you are shikwad for incitement (or any other charge in which you are innocent) and you try to get a lawyer to fight your case :)

Greetings Brothers and Sisters,
I've managed to start looking at a number of things however the most complicated process i've been trying to follow up on is this.
So my question to you is this:
Do you know who can help me find out if we can legalize a direct process of interjection considering after about 3 weeks of this nonsense, there's still daily news of just dying people. I'm sure a lot more Kenyans will sit with this if there is an actual process of direct participation as opposed to going through waiting for things to happen.
And something i found disgusting. approx Ksh 845Million saved last year as MP's and Gov't officials drove smaller cars.* WTF?*

To what extent can one use the clause that allows one to sue on behalf of an aggrieved party in the new constitution? In a CIO Event held on Friday at Norfolk, Stephen Kiptiness, Telkom Kenya's head of regulatory affairs says that telcos anticipate such suits in the coming year, Can one sue the govt, or a ministry on behalf of aggrieved Baringo residents (or is this an act of God)? Can one sue the govt for non implementation of road laws on behalf of all road users?

personally i think any action that involves suing this amorphous body called the government (currently kenyans have zero ownership of their government), it is all just whining. I think we should look for solutions that have a direct impact on those in charge ot our affairs, for instance, make them culpable for non action as individual ministers and not as "government". Let it pay, but be pay and sacrifice to be a minister, On Sat, Feb 12, 2011 at 10:15 PM, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

Well, so far Wetangula was stopped from been a minister, he still enjoys security, official car and full salary, only thing is that he does not have to report to work. Then we have seen our very own president going to a rally and holding hands and asking certain people who seemed to have done everything in a corrupt manner and asking for them to be forgiven

Bottomline you will still pay. through purchase for goods, Services etc.... Look at paying for taxes positively...I would advocate for every person to pay from as low as 3000/= to those with billions that way things move. If you have a case ask for excemption as a group or as an individual am sure there are many Counsels who can assist you in doing this. I believe the solution lies somewhere in between radical measures to dealing with corruption and impunity (orthodox & unorthodox) and being patriotic enough to steer clear of the all too common path of curting corners. This months edition of "The New African" has quite some interesting insights into nation building with focus on what it took to move nations like south Korea and China from third to first. Probably somewhat a tangent here but thought I'd ask since it is somewhat related - has any of you ever received the tax refund from the excess you pay in taxes? I know if you have a deficit KRA will hunt you down but if you have paid excess, do they ever pay up? -Billy 2011/4/19 [ Brainiac ] <arebacollins@gmail.com>

@okechukwu i dont believe anyone is talking about evasion. Some countries gave the death sentence to economic crimes, some made it impossible for anyone holding office to travel outside his country unaccompanied by "secret police".... in a nutshell, we need to make the cost of corruption soo high so that its not even a thought. Then strengthen institutions through GOVERNMENT intervention. Free market economics is Colonialism II. On Tue, Apr 19, 2011 at 11:07 AM, Okechukwu <okechukwu@gmail.com> wrote:

I had never considered tax evasion. The idea as ./Ok3ch mentioned was at a point in time withholding taxes. I have however moved away from that thought and considered a number of variances related to it. I am open to sharing the information i have gathered and would be more than happy to have support for what i am about to explain. This is a synopsis of sorts of what i had imagined would be possible. Ever heard lennon's "Imagine"? How plausible is an idea like it? who is willing to live in a society without money, hierarchies of social strata? There is a possibility of infinitely progressing where peace thrives;where there is no inequality; where the day's events are spent doing what as an individual i would be enjoying without the worry of what i would need tomorrow for my bus ride to work. granted it may be a bit much to ask for at the current even in an ideal setup. But what if.. there is a way? what if i told you that i've found a way to create Utopia. * *Would you be interested? Eutopicwatchman.
