Hello My phone was stolen and also a friend's too but something tells me that the crooks either play with the IMEI or are re-packaged and sold in other african countries.Just thinking loud. Who else thinks like me.Or it might be a serious cartel. Hazirudi kwa mtandao bwana humu nchini. -- Regards Memusi Communication is vital in this century....

Maybe you can confirm if the bootloader is locked, depending on this, IMEI can or can't be changed.

I agree. Three possibilities: 1. The stolen phones are yet to get a buyer :) 2. The stolen phones are now generating revenue for another operator other than the one you are monitoring on 3. God forbid, the IMEIs of the stolen phones have been tampered with (changed to something that is deemed valid to the local operators) The show-stopper in containing handset theft is more operational/regulatory than technical. So long as a handset blacklisted on one network can still be used on another regional network, we are in for a looong ride. Simple collaboration between the regional OpCos (sharing of blacklisted IMEIs) will drastically cut down the market for stolen handsets. But then, it's all about the bottom line... not so? *PS : Am I misguided to think that the enforcement of the 'fake-phone-switch-off' was superficially done? My guess is that these OpCo's may simply be sniffing out for handsets that bear no IMEI as opposed to doing a comprehensive look-up of the IMEIs that latch onto their network. (GSMA has the full database)*

Hi Claude, 1. Buy Samsung phones - there are those with tracking capability - sending SMS when SIM card is changed Let me say here and now that I don't trust any Android trackers as they can be circumvented. 2. Take insurance for your phone and stop worrying about theft - or any other damage that renders it useless. On 12 February 2013 09:10, Claude D'souza <claudedsouza1@gmail.com> wrote:

My point about Samsung was just a clue, and yes, I think it's only Samsung phones that have the feature. If your Samsung is not your choice, then point number 2 applies. Most insurance companies have a Domestic Policy package that can cover everything you own, and electronics live phones, cameras, etc are covered under "all risks". You need to figure out what that terminology stands for but it's what I always count on - If my phone fell and broke into pieces, fell into water and stopped working, got stolen - I get indemnified. The premium is actually quite minimal. Singling it out from among the household items covered, it looks like I pay about 800 to cover a phone worth 32,000. In the recent past visiting the CID HQ in Muthaiga with a good amount of 'chai' for their motivation got your phone back in 2 weeks. Stealing of phones is considered robbery with violence and thus a pretty serious crime. I imagine it is not rocket science for the authorities to follow your phone as it changes sims and thus establish the transactions going on. With IMEI changing this will be arguably be harder but most petty thieves are unlikley to have advanced knowledge on tinkering with IMEIs. I would go with the CID or police if the phone is highly valuable and take some motivation with you. On Tue, Feb 12, 2013 at 10:11 AM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com>wrote:

Good question and I think in the lines of creating an independent database that will keep a list of all blacklisted stolen items and then create awareness to the public as well as make the ISPs use it.
Thanks Jackson

Ahh yes,the good ol' kenyan way of operating. Given the increasing value of phones and the data contained I wouldn't mind having that card to play. With IMEI changing this will be arguably be harder but most petty thieves are unlikley to have advanced knowledge on tinkering with IMEIs. I would go with the CID or police if the phone is highly valuable and take some motivation with you.

With IMEI changing this will be arguably be harder but most petty thieves are unlikley to have advanced knowledge on tinkering with IMEIs. I would go with the CID or police if the phone is highly valuable and take some motivation with you.

You need to figure out what that terminology stands for but it's what I always count on - If my phone fell and broke into pieces, fell into water and stopped working, got stolen - I get indemnified. Good question and I think in the lines of creating an independent database that will keep a list of all blacklisted stolen items and then create awareness to the public as well as make the ISPs use it.

How about a good old backup of important data on the phone, contacts especially? Should cover your bases even in the event of the inevitable phone-concrete merger. MB On Tue, Feb 12, 2013 at 9:10 AM, Claude D'souza <claudedsouza1@gmail.com>wrote:

The show-stopper in containing handset theft is more operational/regulatory than technical.
So long as a handset blacklisted on one network can still be used on another regional network, we are in for a looong ride. Simple collaboration between the regional OpCos (sharing of blacklisted IMEIs) will drastically cut down the market for stolen handsets. But
then,
it's all about the bottom line... not so?
PS : Am I misguided to think that the enforcement of the 'fake-phone-switch-off' was superficially done? My guess is that these OpCo's may simply be sniffing out for handsets that bear no IMEI as opposed to doing a comprehensive look-up of the IMEIs that latch onto their network. (GSMA has the full database)
