Simon, If you use Ipads, that does not mean PCs are obsolete. Vsat is not obsolete, otherwise when the undersea fibers go down, you would not run to VSAT like everyone does. Do you know what side of Turkana Erick is refering to? You can talk to Callkey or iWay. I know they sell VSAT and are quite good at what they do. /Bonz On Thu, Jun 9, 2011 at 11:00 AM, Okechukwu <okechukwu@gmail.com> wrote:

I'm talking about an area called kapedro. I don't know if you've heard of it. @Brainiac, according to safaricom statistics, they don't have wimax coverage in Turkana. @Boniface, I'll give them a call and hear what they have to say. -- Thanks and Regards, Erick Njenga Nyachwaya, M: +254-725-008-790 <http://www.facebook.com/ErickNjenga> <http://www.twitter.com/ErickNjenga>

Simon could be right ... I would use Simon's WiMax .. First install masts all the way to Turkana ... no wait .. First get power lines to Turkana (600km) so that they can be used to power the repeater base stations and the wimax active devices .. Employ jammaz to take care of the stations.. and equipment .. and voila .. there you have it... Why get obsolete vsat of about USD 8,000 when one can easily get a WiMax solution with about 1 million USD .. ... ama aje Simon ? ..its a no brainer ..

There are many possibilities available... some at pretty decent cost... but each site requires a study to ascertain the right technology solution. The solution has to meet the need. With that said, satellite is the only option in some areas although the best opinion is the cheapest for the greatest amount of bandwidth at the highest speed. In this case, I suspect we many have to use satellite with solar and Wifi instead of WiMax. But site specific details are required. ;) Best, Crystal On Thu, Jun 9, 2011 at 2:12 PM, Thomas Kibui <thomas.kibui@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi Skunks, Networking techies, kindly assist A non-techie mentioned to me about a structured cabling method where you use the same cable for phone and computer How does it work? What equipments are required? What is the advantage and disadvantages of this type of cabling over traditional structured cabling (data, voice separate)? Any links to more info/reference sites will be highly appreciated. Have googled and can't get any details. Regards Shad

Most IP phones have a provision where the network connection enters the phone, which then has another port where you can plugin a PC. Look at it like a small switching unit within the phone - though not really. No special cabling is needed. I do hope you know that in CAT5 it is possible to use only 2 pairs for data, right? You do not need to use all the 4 pairs. So depending on where you patch panel "patching", you can end up carrying one data line to PC and two voice lines - if your phones are digital (not IP) and use just a single pair for signalling.
Wuah! I am not a voice/data engineering! Just another techie:) -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ I can't hear you -- I'm using the scrambler. Please consider the environment before printing this email.

Corrections are welcome as to whether my thinking is correct, but a computer using a non-poe (ordinary LAN) cabling system uses only 4 strands (1,2,3,6) so you can carry two analog phone channels on that as well

IT is called the CISCO IP phone system, it uses the same connection for data and voice On Wed, Jun 8, 2011 at 4:03 PM, Haggai Nyang <haggai.nyang@gmail.com> wrote:

IMHO not all structured cabling solutions have Cisco at the endpoints, so what gives? Decoupling is essential. As the Cisco solution is IP based it will just use the 4 Ethernet strands while the 2-pair analog lines are still available.

It can be done..... their are various solutions: 1. IP Telephony ..... where you use a PABX that can sit on the network, and not necessarily a cisco 2. splitting of the cables but if you are doing a new building their is the more exciting fiber to desk solution (GPOL/ GPON) call me 0721221001.... Shad, as previously said, depends on how you want your phones and pc's to coexist. But I think what you want is more of IP phones as opposed to analogue phone setup. Its the easier setup. I have done such hybrid (analogue and digital) setups before, for analogue phones you need to be a little vigilant so that the right pairs are used both on the discase and patch panel. Its a little different. If you want a demo I can volunteer. Peter On Wed, Jun 8, 2011 at 4:27 PM, Joseph Maina <mainasoft00@gmail.com> wrote:
