Hi all. I have been holding on to some very old classic music(thanks to my dad)in the form of those cassettes. (The likes of Charlie Pride etc etc) and this is stuff i cant even find on torrents. Now my question is, i know there is a way to convert the music to digital(CD that is) but where exactly can i get this done in Nairobi? I only have one take at it so if they screw up the tape then am done for. Suggestions and feedback highly appreciated. _tyrus -IEEE Member

We can strike a deal. You do it and get copies of all the cassettes I have:-) On a serious note though, tell me how we can link up. Phone details are below. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

Some time back, I did a massive conversion of my rare collection audio tapes into CD format. My simple process involved: - Playin the audios tapes from a separate - Feeding the output of above into the mic input of a PC - Capturing the input using available software (I had some crude tool that came with the Motherboard) - Processing the resulting audio files (Trimming off paused, sound levelling, etc) The trick was in tinkering with the settings on the tools used. Else, I believe there are guys who offer the same service commercially.

@fyodor et al: I think if you are willing to pay for these services (or have someone on the inside) you can approach the recording studios - no idea how much they would charge for this, but I believe it is the best for quality coz they have all the fancy equipment that can do this... Else you can take up Tony's approach or Wahome's... Kind Regards John On Wed, Jun 30, 2010 at 5:21 PM, Tony Likhanga <tlikhanga@gmail.com> wrote:

I'm thinking playing the tapes on a radio with a cable [with jackpins at both ends] running from the headphone output slot to the line-in on an ordinary pc with sound recorder recording as it plays... jsut a simple setup... I think that's a simple DIY approach that'd help too. On 30 June 2010 17:25, John Ndambuki <johnmndambuki@gmail.com> wrote:

I did it using freeware called Audacity. As said above, play tape, link pc (headphone to mic) and press record on Audacity (support stereo), then remove noise and play with Audacity features. On 6/30/10, Simon Mbuthia <simon.mbuthia@gmail.com> wrote:

Using a headphone jack from a playback to the computer jack is workable but the quality is compromised seriously especially if compared to the same audio signalled through a mixer. You then can regulate the levels to reduce noise even improve the quality with the effects of a audio production software like audacity. The way i did it for my collection :) 1) Get a two-side RCA jack cable ( fancy name for the stereo cable connectors we're all used to ). Connect one end to the "Line Out" / "Out" of your stereo/hi-fi ( tenj :) and plugin the other end into the "Line In" of your PC 2) On your PC, start Audacity <http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/>and click on "Record" and change the source to "Line In" or "Stereo Mix". Play the tape on your tenj *at relatively low volume* and watch the Audacity waveforms to see if you're getting any input. You can do several trial runs to ensure you're getting in the music ok and that your volume settings are ok . [ Stop the recording on Audacity and playback then restart (as many times as necessary) ]. When satisfied that the setup is ok, start Recording on Audacity play the tape from the start. [ *Emphasis on low volume because the higher the volume, the higher the *noise* (electronic & otherwise). Volume/loudness can be fixed later ( see below ) ] 3) When you're done recording, select the tracks as desired & "save selection" to WAV/MP3 ( MP3 is preferred :) You can also save the whole track ( if you want it like that ). 4) By this stage, you have several MP3's / one *large* MP3 of your favourite tape music. Next step is to enhance the decibels :) For this, MP3Gain<http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/download.php>will sort you out just fine :) 5) You can still re-open the MP3 file or raw recorded files with Audacity and apply DSP effects to your music. For example, bass boost, noise removal, cross-fade, and so on Happy recording! :)
