Hi guys, I need your help here, I have a domain managed by a windows 2003 server, the clients are running XP SP2, I keep getting an error, *"Generic host for win32 services encountered an error and needs to close"* on clicking don't send the computer will hang, and only a restart will render it usable again. I have dug up Google and it appears that the error is update related, My main problem is that all the options under automatic updates on the client computers are grayed out, Tweaking the registry and Group policy did not work according to an article on the internet, This might suggest that the reason these options are grayed out has something to do with the domain controller. *Q: How can i configure / disable automatic updates for client workstations from the domain controller. * *Useful Information* - I am running KIS ver6.0 on all workstations with current updates and no viruses have been detected. - The Domain controller is running Symantec AV. With this weeks update - When i remove a workstation from the domain the options under automatic updates are enabled and usable. - I have installed a patch from Microsoft that is supposed to fix this but it hasn't probably because you need to disable automatic updates too. - Which i haven't managed. Any help is highly appreciated. Thanks. -- Best Regards Martin Maina C: +254726937792 , +254770147485 T: +254 0202465663 E: martinmur87@gmail.com W: http://martingeek.110mb.com

Martin I suspect your clients have been configured to use your server on your domain to download updates through Group Policy. You can try and disable this and see if it sorts your problems> On your Windows 2003 Server, go to Start > All Programs > Administrative Tools and click on Group Policy Management. Scroll down the objects and you will see Group Policy Objects.Expand and right click on Group Domain Policy and select Edit. This opens the Group Domain Policy Editor. Under '*Computer Configuration'*, go to Administrative Templates, expand it, go to Windows Components, expand it and click on Windows Update. Now go to the Windows Update settings, and look at 'Specify intranet Microsoft update service location' and see if it is enabled. If it is, you can disable it. There are also other settings there which control how the update service works. Also check under *'User Configuration'* and check if the Update Service settings are set there. if you do not have the Group Policy Management console, you can download it from the Microsoft download site.

Philip... I just disabled updates on the group domain policy ... I, the options on workstations are nor enabled yet, even after several restarts, Lets see how the workstations behave in the next 8 or 16 hours... . Thanks. On Thu, Sep 17, 2009 at 12:31 PM, Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:

Try GPUPDATE on the client machines. This may refresh the Group Policy settings on the workstations. Just type GPUPDATE on Windows prompt and this should do it.

gpupdate /force On Thu, Sep 17, 2009 at 3:49 PM, Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:
