Hey skunks, I'd like to hear your views on how much you think is a reasonable pay for IT support as starting salary. I'd like to hear your views from a freelancer perspective, employee and employer (or a friend to the guy being hired) Regards.

That will all depend with the region! If in Nairobi and in all the Cities in Kenya giving anyone less than Ksh25,000 is slavery! I humiliatively started with Ksh 13,000 some 10 years ago and would barely survive! My pure recomendation is Ksh 25,000 else the company does not need the IT Support personnel, thats a provision for a grown company. There is no need to employ IT support if you are giving less than that and at some point out-sourcing is cheaper! Hi, I will agree with James. Also it depends on your qualification i.e fresh graduate with already added cert like ccna or ccnp will hv more bargaining power if he had already done some internship in busy organization. Starting can be over 60k or so. Above Average graduate with no added cert from a recognized institution like Moi Uni with Comp science degree can start with 40k or so. Smart person from recognized institution can start with 30k or so. Others i.e Kemu, inorero, and the like can start with any. But my starting was 70k in 2012 and now am doing well though, doing my CCIE Lab in April next yr. Don't we have some very good, passionate graduates from Inorero, KEMU who are doing very well? I have a few.... from these institutions whose skills are a rare breed and match, even regionally. I personally won't buy that notion that where you schooled naturally translates to how good you are and how much you are worth. To a large extent Salaries depends on the who is hiring. Most companies have job grades and they will pay according to those grades no matter how good you are. I started at about 30k some 9yrs ago and i believe my first employer still pays that for IT Support. Now go there with your 70k ideal demand and lets see whether they will employ you. Later in my career i got a job offer from Gov. bank and the offer was 1/3 of my asking and less than my current salary then. I politely said no. To get specific range, you must be specific on the industry/sector etc. Sincerely, Jared Oyier On 25 September 2015 at 09:54, Sammy Mutua via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

We should get separate answers from those employed and those employing.
From an employer's point, it depends on the size and revenue of the company or business. The industry you are in matters too as an ISP will pay better than a SACCO or hotel would.

My pure recomendation is Ksh 25,000 else the company does not need the IT Support personnel, thats a provision for a grown company. There is no need to employ IT support if you are giving less than that and at some point out-sourcing is cheaper!

@Job - I totally agree with you. More than half the responses here are from employee thinking - one day when you become an employer, you will totally think differently. The size of organization matters too, but half the time, its how much you convince the interviewer and employer that you are worth what you asking for. For starters, 30k-40k is quite ideal - lacking experience & totally unpredicted in the new environment, 70k is stretching your luck too much! ./Ok3ch On Fri, Sep 25, 2015 at 3:13 PM, Job Muriuki via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Like someone said you want someone who's motivated to work and not someone who's frustrated. Of course for starters you can't just stretch to 70k and you don't know what he/she can do, so I think 50k for starters is ideal as they also have to pay rent and stuff. That applies both to the employee and employer. Times are changing. With 30k and below, you can't really do much. I believe there are two sides of this salary story. Most employers do not want to pay too well to make you comfortable, I remember an employer who used to challenge his employees telling them that he cannot pay them alot of money to BUY a car like his or a good house. That is the sad truth but the challenge he put across is that people need to work smart and work hard to build themselves and their empires. His job is to give employees an avenue to learn from to mentor to tutor. Sio kukulea! On Sat, Sep 26, 2015 at 8:25 AM, Dennis Kanja via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:
