Nokia introduces Asha, a new line of ‘aspirational’ phones for emerging markets <http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/TheNextWeb/~3/V0qd8wEIoko/> by Aayush Arya Nokia has just announced a new lineup of mobile phones at its Nokia World 2011 conference and it is calling them “Asha”. The lineup consists of four phones that will be taking their place between feature phones and smartphones and will be targeted at emerging economies. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop spoke about how the company wanted to target “the next billion” people with this new lineup of phones. “The next billion is a really young crowd in high-growth, emerging markets,” he said, “and they are savvy mobile users”. “Asha” means “hope” in Hindi and, according to Elop, and signifies the new abilities these phones will be bringing to people in the world’s developing countries. They’ll allow them to go online while on the go, which is still a luxury in many parts of the world, and remain connected with their family and friends via social networks—features that we take for granted in modern smartphones. These phones are totally ugly in ear of sex devices from Apple and Samsung. Nokia will just never learn. I am not sure who told them phones for emerging markets should be made from cheap plastic and a myriad of colors.

My friend, who said Polycarbonate is a cheap plastic... its the same plastic used to make bullet proof glass... in banks, cars etc. Its used as the cockpit dome in fighter jets... give them a break C'mon ----- "Philip Musyoki" <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:

Nokia Asha is a pretty clever brand strategy as the word Asha resonates in India, Africa and Middle east albeit with different meanings. However if money is to be made I think its on the software side i.e. apps and cloud services and I wonder what strategies they have with Microsoft to address this.. Impressive launch nonetheless. I think we have a problem if they are launching these to compete with the lower end Android Devices. For one the have still decided to deploy the Asha phones on Symbian , and one of the is going for around 85 Euros which translates to approximately 12k - If you ask me I would go for the Galaxy Mini. By the way even their high end Lumia Devices have failed to impress( according to press reviews) and do not think will fight it out with the iphones, HTCs and Samsungs of this world. My 2 cents. After all the wait, I actually expected something awesome and revolutionary from Nokia. What I am seeing seemed to be devices recycled from existing backlog of materials. And there is no need to keep Symbian for the 'Emerging' market, if you decide to go Windows Phone, do it for all the devices. This is strategy bound to fail. Nokia will remain the 'the king of dumbphones' for sometime if this is all they have to show for a year of development.

By the way, these phones dont run Symbian. They run S40. S40 is not Symbian. Dont confuse it with S60 based phones. S40 is a propriety Nokia OS which is being replaced by Meltemi Linux. So dont think this is the future of Nokia they are just getting rid of old stock. Steve ----- "Philip Musyoki" <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:

Nokia hasn't abandoned Meego, its a significant part of their strategy particularly regarding Research and Development. They will be releasing a Meego device as a prototype to every new Windows phone upgrade. QT will power all these platforms including possibly android making the first cross-platform compatible apps. I actually met someone sometime back who had a prototype of the N9.. that is a kick ass phone, I was really impressed. Unfortunately the deal with M$ has killed MeeGo as a contender for the high end market phones. MeeGo will power lower end phones but code named Meltemi. ----- "Maux" <mauxdatabase@gmail.com> wrote:

Meego for low end is such a good idea, and if so, will surely be a big benefit for Africa

Nokia announced last November 2010 and again in Feb 2011 that they still have 1 MeeGo phone (nokia N9), 150 million phones to sell of Symbian and roughly the same amount of S40 phones after which they will kiss Symbian goodbye in favor of Windows Phone for the smartphones and mid level phones. S40 is also on its way out in favor of Meltemi which is Linux based for the Mid to low end phones. Meltemi will be developed in house by Nokia. The roadmap for this goes right through to 2014. So yeah the phones they are releasing now are transition phones... to keep something in the market until when they are ready with the new OSs --------------------------------------- Steve Obbayi: Software Developer Homepage: http://www.sobbayi.com ======================================= ----- "Kevin Omondi" <kevin.ouma@gmail.com> wrote:

They are made of polycarbonate. Nokia started using the polycarbonate Engineering plastic since the Nokia N9 and will continue coz this plastic insulates from interference with reception. http://swipe.nokia.com/ ----- "Philip Musyoki" <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:
