Wananchi Group Free Internet

So Wananchi Group plans to offer free Internet to 240 schools according to this article http://www.capitalfm.co.ke/business/2014/03/240-schools-in-nairobi-to-get-fr.... I know they don't do this just out of the goodness of their hearts, what's the catch? What's in it for them? -- ./mg

Lets see... 1. Maybe the internet will be so crappy that any school connected will HAVE to upgrade to make it useable, and since the wananchi infrastructure will be there already, bam! Lots of new clients 2. Maybe the county government will waive some fees they charge to them, e.g. digging trenches across the city. On other matters, why cant the county goverment dig the trenches across every inch of the city and then rent out space to other providers? That would be a nice constant stream of income for them. or... (one way I could think of is) 1. provide good free internet for one year (or a period), to make all schools join their network 2. provide, setup, train schools to use their free web based school management system through their links (it's free, right?) 3. gather data on schools, students, curriculum, timetables, fees payments, parent information etc using the system etc 4. team up with an MFI of bank to offer student loans to students (at a fee) and vet using historical payment data 5. charge schools for online educational content 6. offer teachers salary advances and loans again using data 7. charge the public to use wifi hotspots with pop points being the schools ... many ways - think long term, 5 years think about it, with chrome and android, google's public DNS, google earth and maps really free? at some point, chrome was the largest "money maker" for Google! Points worth noting is that; - If its meant for schools (students and NOT teachers) there will never be misuse unless the students themselves know how to bypass the IT admins firewalls. - That its only used during study - not movies, torrents etc. Rooms remain locked. Little bandwidth is observed when normal learning is ongoing. - Dansguardians and other url/content filters MUST be employed to inculcate good morals and values. - That wananchi PR will be boosted :) - the main catch. Advertising without paying a penny! Kind Regards, Wilson./ On 12 March 2014 08:27, Jangita Nyagudi <jangita.nyagudi@gmail.com> wrote:
