If you want my honest opinion, based on your write up : - The app will do very poorly. ( unless the population just woke up and discovered such technologies ) - The app is more in favour of the operator than the user. SMS characters limit = 160, 1Mbyte characters limit = 1,000,000 ( or close ). Costs of 1 SMS versus 1 Mbyte is hugely out of proprotional. Big looser is the end user. - The app providing chat services is an old idea. Beginning in the edge days, such apps were available for most handsets. Bad idea for the gentleman ( as per your article ) to start selling big words like rural urban Digital Divide. He wants the rural to spend on SMS'es while the operators should really be the ones spreading data networks across the country which in turn is leading to cheaper smart phones or basic smartphones. I think the application is anti-development and a contributor of the real digital divide = affordable costs Have I mis-interpreted the app? Rgds.

Maybe not... i dont know about this particular service -- but Zain have a similar thing which I have seen some NGOs using in the field. Its basically SMS without 160 char limitations -- you can send long SMS which gets transformed to email. The carrier charge (if i recall correctly ) irrespective of length was that of a single sms. ashok

If the cost is as you mention, it makes sense for those travelling outside data coverage areas. The last I heard, even Loki is covered by Safaricom Edge. Then there is the issue of screen size and memory limitations on not so smart handsets? What target market is the app seeking? A value added service for the business sector or the general kenyan public? If anyone has used the app, pls update on costs. Rgds.

I have used the app n its actually pretty neat. Its basically has 2 features that work exactly like SMS2Email and Google's Gtalk SMS. Last time I used it costs were Kshs 1.50 per SMS. On Thu, Aug 12, 2010 at 2:13 PM, The Ice Man <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

Thank you for the clarification on costs. Then it sounds like mHealth for remote areas may be one beneficiary of the app. Me thots.

Therez a way you can even do Peer to Peer SMS using the same app. On Fri, Aug 13, 2010 at 4:13 PM, The Ice Man <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

@Jeremy, seems you are quite conversant with the app. Would you be able to do something about breaking down the myths of the app? Would you do something at http://blog.my.co.ke/ . It would be a nice analysis of the app available to the kenyan public. Please contact @Phares if you are okay with doing so. And thank you for enlightening some of us, me included. :-) Me thots. Jeremy, how exactly does this service work? If I'm logged on to my GTalk, how can I send/receive messages from/to you? Or do you have to initiate contact first? Like Ice Man said, the idea (and the technology) is almost as old as my grandmother. I wonder what applications Safcom had in mind when launching. the costs, maybe it should have a daily cost rather than per SMS. when you factor in tens of SMS, the cost is quite high.

@ Saidimu 1. Send an SMS with the word WEBREG, followed by your name, to 223 (Example: webreg Paul). 2. You'll be assigned an email address 0722123456@safaricom.net and you'll also receive a password that you'll use to login to www.safaricom.net (You can give people this email address 0722123456@safaricom.net and ask then to invite you to chat or you can initiate as detailed below) 3. (i) To send an email, send a SMS with your CONTACTS NAME space, then the CONTACTS EMAIL ADDRESS to the Kipokezi setup number 223. e.g Paul paul@yahoo.com. Alternatively you can login and click on contacts page and add a contact. Your contact Paul will be assigned a long number for example 0712333666. You'll receive an SMS asking you to save this number to your phone book. (ii) To chat with someone, send a SMS with your CONTACTS NAME space CHAT space CONTACTS EMAIL ADDRESS to the Kipokezi setup number 223. e.g Paul Chat paul@yahoo.com. Alternatively you can login and click on contacts page and add a contact. Your contact Paul will be assigned a long number for example 0712333666. You'll receive an SMS asking you to save this number to your phone book. 4. Sending an email or chatting is now as simple as creating a new message on your phone and sending it to the number you saved in step 3 (ii) above. @ Dennis Each message (160 xters) to 223 is charged at Ksh 3.50, E-mail costs Ksh 3.50 while Chat costs Ksh. 1.50 On Mon, Aug 16, 2010 at 12:50 PM, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

@Ogembo, Thanks for the very detailed info. Safcom seem to have complicated what should really have been a simple product; I wonder how many people will successfully run that gauntlet. If anyone is using this service, do you mind testing it with my GTalk (same as my email)? I'm really curious about it (for PetrolTracker purposes).
