Apple is not toast and will never be until the google phone becomes the reference point. Right now, everyone tries to make their phone look like the iPhone (including google) and they will go at great lengths to show the similarities and differences. It means the iPhone is the standard setting phone and everyone is waiting what Apple will do next - that is the best position to be at. ./Ok3ch On Sun, Dec 13, 2009 at 11:40 PM, saidimu apale <saidimu@gmail.com> wrote:

Google has way more leverage than Apple does, across many sectors, that it's difficult to tell where to begin. First-to-market doesn't always translate to last-left-standing. Microsoft is a good case in point: they weren't first to the browser market but now they dominate. Their dominance wasn't earned legally, but the point is one can still dominate even when late to the game. Once the iPhone becomes commoditized and simply becomes another phone, as will inevitably happen, what will Apple do? Once iTunes and Apple's appstore become commoditized... what next for Apple? They don't appear to have a large-scale strategy for anything, besides amazing hardware once every x-years. What happens when the emphasis on smartphones shifts from hardware to almost exclusively software, as happened in the PC sector? Keep in mind that before the iPod, Apple was just a niche player. i dont know if reading ebooks on a phone is going to be a major game changer, but thats just me, i prefer reading books on paper. large part of the phone market is still traditional voice / sms services based .... and perhaps some twitter and email if you have a smart phone. most people i know dont even have a smart phone.

No one knows what the game-changer will be, that is why companies with incredible reach have an opportunity to leverage that intelligently. Take Amazon.com for instance: they managed to morph from an online bookseller (of all things!) to a serious contender with the Amazon EC2 suite, Kindle etc. Google started with (just) search, look where they are now. Apple had an opportunity to extend their appstore reach way beyond their iPod/iPhone line but Steve Jobs would have none of it. That may come back to bite him. Then again, who knows? My point is - until everyone wants to compare their phone makes to google's, it will still trail - since right now its like the iPhone is the standard for all phones and might be for a long time to come - just like in the Desktop PC, most of us don'r own an Mac, but it is still the standard we use to measure PC's. ./ok3ch On Mon, Dec 14, 2009 at 11:34 AM, David Njuki <njukey@gmail.com> wrote:

It is also wrong to say Apple has lesser leverage than Google. I think Apple far has more clout that Google, stretching for desktop computers to laptops, iTunes, iPod and the iPhone. Google is king in search, and that is not disputed, but Apple is king in desktops, laptops, operating systems, iTunes, iPod and the iPhone and Google is the one playing catch up right now. No other company with maybe the exception of Microsoft has changed the computing landscape the way Apple has, Google does not even come close. There is a big difference with having potential and being there. Apple is there, and Google has potential. And that's all.

Interesting comment. You seem to imply that it's not even a battle at all. Google it and you'll find that quite a number think it's a battle of the titans. Question is: why is Microsoft missing in action? What tricks does Steve Ballmer (or whoever succeeds him once the board fires him) have up his sleeve? Google's focus isn't really search, it is advertising. They're just good at leveraging search to increase their ad revenue. There's a lot about Google's practices that I don't like, privacy being top of the list. I am, however, a fan of some of their core technology (I've posted before about Peter Norvig's talks on big data and big possibilities). Question: what other tech company has successfully implemented an ad-supported freemium model on a scale as large as Google's? - Email: remember how much space Hotmail and Yahoo used to give users before Gmail upped the game? - Maps: remember how crappy Mapquest was before Google Maps came in? And that's even before you consider StreetView. - Maps: anything remotely resembling Google Earth, at that cost? - GPS navigation: turn-by-turn for free? - Research: online search was mostly considered a "done deal" by the major contenders (Yahoo, Inktomi, etc etc) before Google upended everything with a radically new system (which also included image search) - Data-mining: the standard wisdom relied on a small corpus of text to build complex, and hopefully complete, models on. Peter Norvig advocates huge corpuses and largely dispenses with complex/complete models (whether in translation, spell-check, entity-recognition etc). - Photos: anything remotely resembling Picasa, for the price and features? This isn't really about Google, but rather about the success of a very different business model on a humongous scale. Unfortunately, we don't seem to realize the privacy implications to the consumer.... until it's too late. Previously, most of these apps would have cost you dollars. Now they cost advertisers dollars and you don't pay any cash. Of course, you pay in other ways (the information you give, the loss of privacy etc etc). The bigger worry is in a single player having sizeable influence in such a wide-spectrum of technological life. For now Google may be a benevolent monopoly, but for how long? No other company with maybe the exception of Microsoft has changed the
computing landscape the way Apple has, Google does not even come close.

Yes Okechuckwu, I am obsessed with the goings on in my field. And so are the many others who author the links I post. They too are obsessed with things they're passionate about. I wouldnt underestimate Apple just yet. Apple release game changers and their ecosystem has been systematically growing and so has their following.Microsoft is a behemoth, many times the size of either google or apple. their strategy is to dominate by appealing to the masses and using their size to influence governments and large corporations. And locking people in through what can sometimes be termed unfair practises. Apple have until recently appealed to elitists and even the iphone is only a mass market product in the US. Its still somehow a premium product. And their profitability is massive. I rarely see the 3 players as direct competitors coz their offerings are different, they just do it on similar platforms. I think the battle is in the minds of the press and us but each company has a very clear strategy for survival and winning If it was a race?Id put my bet on apple winning in the long run, maybe im also obsessed with Jobs and Ive? What many people forget is that the iPhone is not a phone, it is a lifestyle. The Android can run mySQL or whatever other clichè is in fashion but it will never have the appeal of the iPhone. The iPhone is going nowhere. You forgot to say that the iPhone has like 100k application it runs which the Android does not. But no one says the Android is doomed. People, how can one talk of Google, Microsoft and Apple in the same context? Its like comparing guavas, mangoes and apricots! Google is the king of advertising<http://www.searchenginejournal.com/google-now-controls-69-of-online-advertising-market/6632/>, much as I hate to admit it, microsoft is the king of the desktop OS<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_systems>, and Apple computer, well, they have their fingers in a lil bit of everything; hardware, OS, smart phone (hardware and OS), music players. Therefore, to have a factual discussion, compare the iPod to the Zune, iPhone to Android (M$ still sticking to windows mobile), MacOs to Windows OS, Google Search to Bing etc Anything other than that is merely one expressing their opinion, which i am told are like noses, coz everyone has his. I found this businessweek article<http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/06_14/b3978407.htm>to have interesting opinions On Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 9:48 AM, Josiah Mugambi <jmugambi@gmail.com> wrote:

I think the battle is in the minds of the press and us but each company has a very clear strategy for survival and winning
If it was a race?Id put my bet on apple winning in the long run, maybe im also obsessed with Jobs and Ive?

I found this businessweek article<http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/06_14/b3978407.htm> to have interesting opinions
Is that article really from April 2006? People, how can one talk of Google, Microsoft and Apple in the same context?
Its like comparing guavas, mangoes and apricots!
They're all fruits, aren't they? ;) And there's nothing stopping a guava vendor from using their dominance in guavas to enter into the apricots app store. Infact, a smart business person would do just that. Look at Amazon: EC2 and their other cloud-computing offerings were built on books (the physical kind). They used their dominance in guavas to enter the apricot market. That's exactly what Safaricom is doing as well, they started out as purely telecom... what are they now? Tech folks need to think beyond the niche market they have (or are trying to) conquer. Otherwise you'll be blindsided by someone who uses their dominance of a totally unrelated area to muscle you out of your turf. Lets leave tech matters awhile and look at those 3 like a tech savvy investor; Google makes much of its money from advertising; revenue for the fiscal year 2008 was USD$21,795,550,000 <http://investor.google.com/fin_data.html>. (21 billion) Microsoft's cash cow is its OSes and office suite, revenue in 2008 was USD$*60,420*,000,000<http://www.microsoft.com/msft/reports/ar08/10k_fh_fin.html>. (60 billion). Apple Inc revenue for 2008 was USD$ 32,479,000,000<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_computer>. (32 billion), most of it, 44%, from Macs. All three companies are computer companies (i.e. fruits) but they derive their fruitiness from rather different sources, advertising, operating systems and a combination of operating systems and hardware. But you are right saidi, nothing stopped Microsoft from venturing into the Zune, probably nothing will prevent them from coming up with their own hardware. Clearly, nothing is stopping Google in their foray into the operating systems arena. As a tech savvy investor, what I would ask myself then before pouring my money into shares of any of the three is; suppose Google starts selling operating system and office software, will its shares perform better than Microsofts? As a tech savvy investor, what I would ask myself then before pouring my money into shares of any of the three is; suppose Google starts selling operating system and office software, will its shares perform better than Microsofts?
The million-dollar question. I think the companies that "get" the period they're in are the ones likely to do best. Microsoft understood the early computing period (in ways IBM and Steve Jobs back then did not) and reaped massive dividends. According to some, today's age is one of consumer electronics (as typified by the iPhone). Even good ol' Research in Motion (the Blackberry folks) are being forced to pay more attention to this sector (I seem to remember reading somewhere that RIMs consumer sales are growing at a faster rate than their enterprise sales). Some suggest, and it makes sense to me, that Apple and Google are primarily consumer-oriented companies whereas Microsoft is an enterprise-oriented one. With the currently-underway shift of consumer computing from the PC to smartphones, guess who stands to benefit most? The one(s) with a consumer orientation. That may explain why Microsoft is having such a hard time in this sector. A surprising, and notable exception, is the Xbox (I guess no model fits reality neatly and perfectly). One should also note that inasmuch as being the incumbent confers immense advantages, it also confers immense constraints. An intelligent startup never takes on an entrenched player on their turf, that is kamikaze/jihadi logic (the Taliban know not to take on the US head-on, just as the Afghani Mujahideen of old never took on the Soviets conventionally). In short, I would bet my money on Google. Nothing I've seen so far from Microsoft or Apple have convinced me that they have a long-term, wide-ranging strategy. Google's strategy has been: data is king, give everything else away but keep the data. This spartan logic underlies all their products, however varied they seem at first glance. And with the rise of the so-called "web squared" (sensors everywhere --> data everywhere), the king of data is well-positioned to extract a tax on everyone. But like you said, it is anybody's guess. In the meantime, we can learn a thing or two about business strategy from these titans of tech (all 3 of them). Smart ideas, unlike Windows 7 licenses from Malaysia, are not geo-locked. Lets leave tech matters awhile and look at those 3 like a tech savvy investor;
Google makes much of its money from advertising; revenue for the fiscal year 2008 was USD$21,795,550,000<http://investor.google.com/fin_data.html>.

Is that article really from April 2006?
People, how can one talk of Google, Microsoft and Apple in the same
context? Its like comparing guavas, mangoes and apricots!
They're all fruits, aren't they? ;)
And there's nothing stopping a guava vendor from using their dominance in guavas to enter into the apricots app store.

Therefore, to have a factual discussion, compare the iPod to the Zune, iPhone to Android (M$ still sticking to windows mobile), MacOs to Windows OS, Google Search to Bing etc
Anything other than that is merely one expressing their opinion, which i am told are like noses, coz everyone has his.

I think the battle is in the minds of the press and us but each company has a very clear strategy for survival and winning
If it was a race?Id put my bet on apple winning in the long run, maybe im also obsessed with Jobs and Ive?

-- Sent from my Voice Recognition Watch© -------------------------------------------------------------------- God is not an excuse for lack of discipline -------------------------------------------------------------------- Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate, but that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us.There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.As we let our own light shine, we consciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

just like in the Desktop PC, most of us don'r own an Mac, but it is
still the standard we use to measure PC's. Ya, but look at the sales numbers for Macs vs. PCs. Macs don't even come close. In the same way, if Apple keeps its current model, it's just a matter of time before the iPhone is overtaken in the North America market (it never was a leader in Europe, Nokia still is). People may still have iPhone-envy, but they'll simply buy other adequate models. We do the same with cars... not everyone buys the BMWs that are "the standard". My point is - until everyone wants to compare their phone makes to google's, it will still trail - since right now its like the iPhone is the standard for all phones and might be for a long time to come - just like in the Desktop PC, most of us don'r own an Mac, but it is still the standard we use to measure PC's.
