Database programming
Hi guys, A pal of mine just cleared colle (elec eng) and wants to learn some database programming.. he is clueless on what is the best language to learn now and where to get the training or certifications locally.. any ideas..
Database programming? I can think of two possible intepretations of this: 1. Main stream programming language with a database back end e.g. PHP, ASP.Net with MySQL and SQL Server 2. Actual database programming like is PL/SQL does on Oracle. Definition of "best language" is usually subjective to the goal being sought, so for example, PHP, ASP, Ruby, Python [insert here your favourite web language] could be ideal for web based applications. Java and .Net could be ideal for desktop applications. All of the languages mentioned [and not mentioned] usually work with at least one database technology. So, what is his goal? He could narrow it down further; which web based language is ideal to learn at this point in time? The Tiobe Index for october 2009<http://www.tiobe.com/index.php/content/paperinfo/tpci/index.html>indicates that PHP and C# are the top 2 web based languages. Or, tell him to learn SQL, the obvious database language. Knowing SQL will help him work with any true database. From there he can specialize on a database system like oracle, mysql, e.t.c. Thanks all for the responses... i will tell him to start with php, mysql and if he wants oracle.. for the sake of job searching... which places are good for getting the certification. in my opinion he should just learn by self them do any relevant exam.. The Tiobe Index for october 2009<http://www.tiobe.com/index.php/content/paperinfo/tpci/index.html>indicates that PHP and C# are the top 2 web based languages. As far as databases are concerned, I don't think he can go wrong with any of the big 3 i.e. oracle, sql server or mysql.

Definition of "best language" is usually subjective to the goal being sought, so for example, PHP, ASP, Ruby, Python [insert here your favourite web language] could be ideal for web based applications. Java and .Net could be ideal for desktop applications. All of the languages mentioned [and not mentioned] usually work with at least one database technology.
So, what is his goal?
