*Local* suppliers of USB finger print readers

Hi Guys, I am looking for *local* suppliers of USD fingerprint readers similar to the ones used in hospitals when identifying a member of a medical insurance scheme. I have walked around some shops in CBD and most of the attendants dont know where to source them. The specific models are http://www.crossmatch.com/UareU4500Reader/ and http://www.crossmatch.com/uareu-5160-reader/ This is for a R&D activity with possibility of a bulk purchase on full rollout. Any leads would be appreciated. Regards

Chigiri, I too have been looking for a local supplier for the subject Digital Persona U. are. U 4500 but in vain.

I happened to have been part of a QA team that was testing a "biometrics module" on a locally developed software, and whichever device you chose, if its going to be used on a flat surface (e.g. a table top or counter), then it is better if the part where the user places their finger is slanted downwards, and not flat. In our test, this <http://www.secugen.com/products/php.htm> (Secugen Hamster Plus and Hamster IV) was better (less time), this <http://www.futronic-tech.com/product_fs88h.html> (Futronic FS88H) was worse (more time), in terms of the number of minutes spent by a user to successfully get their finger scanned. All because of the slanting of the scanning surface. On Wed, Aug 31, 2016 at 8:12 AM, Alvin Ochola via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

In our test, this <http://www.secugen.com/products/php.htm> (Secugen Hamster Plus and Hamster IV) was better (less time), this <http://www.futronic-tech.com/product_fs88h.html> (Futronic FS88H) was worse (more time), in terms of the number of minutes spent by a user to successfully get their finger scanned. Yeah, we did a bit of research. During the development phase, we bought about 3 different models from Amazon, by the time development was complete, we had zeroed in on one, which we then bulk ordered from the manufacturer. Unfortunately, the simulated real world testing showed the non-technical shortcomings with our choice; - Users either had to contort their bodies to comfortably place their finger on the scanner surface of the Futronic FS88H, or - Users had to pick it up, slant it, then place their fingers on the scanner surface It may seem trivial, but if you have a queue of people waiting to get scanned, frustrations can build up extremely fast, due to a few seconds "lost" during scanning. @Kiti, I am sure you already know this, but the choice of the SDK is as important as the choice of the hardware. Hardware manufacturers do not necessarily make the best SDKs. On Wed, Aug 31, 2016 at 8:56 AM, Peter Karunyu <pkarunyu@gmail.com> wrote:

So far my quest has led to promises but nothing. ooncrete. I got a secugen device that could not be detected on debian Ubuntu or windows 7&10. Access to sdks or technical docs and how-to is scanty and seems that it requires specialised device drivers. My bet rests on the u.are.u devices(4500 & 5160) that are common in most authentication systems used by medical scheme providers.
From my research, 1:N matching is problematic; 1:1 matching is easier and the app may need tweaking to accommodate this.
An even bigger catch is customization to android devices as the target platform. Will keep you posted on how it goes.. The ' real world testing' that's where the catch comes in. Naturally testing should be atleast 3 months before a live launch. Gadgets fail etc too... Regards, Alvin On Wed, Aug 31, 2016 at 8:56 AM, Peter Karunyu <pkarunyu@gmail.com> wrote:

- Users either had to contort their bodies to comfortably place their finger on the scanner surface of the Futronic FS88H, or - Users had to pick it up, slant it, then place their fingers on the scanner surface
It may seem trivial, but if you have a queue of people waiting to get scanned, frustrations can build up extremely fast, due to a few seconds "lost" during scanning.

Did you just say Android?? :-) Give me a few minutes and I will share some of the research we have done in that area, as we are currently in the prototyping phase of porting our app to Android. And I am certain that there is a dude here who had quite a bit of success with biometrics on Linux, I think he used Python and some open source library, not sure which. Wacha nimchokoze aseme kitu. And yes, 1:N is slow on our end too, but wait till the bosses ask you to find duplicates in the databases, which is essentially N:N :-) On Thu, Sep 1, 2016 at 9:57 PM, Kiti Chigiri <kiti.chigiri@gmail.com> wrote:

@Chigiri, Take a good look at libfprint. There is a list of libfprint supported devices here. <https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/fprint/libfprint/Supported_devices/> The reason the device could not be detected in Ubuntu or Debian is because there are no kernel devices for these scanners. So how does libfprint do it with ko modules? It uses userspace drivers (written by contributors) which work via libusb. 1:N matching is usually implemented by looping through, which is basically a 1:1 attempt at matching repeated many times.

The SDKs that come with most scanners are optimized for 1:1 matching. Their performance on 1:1 is only reliable on small record; say 5,000 fingerprints. For fast 1:N matching, you'll have to purchase a commercial solution e.g. ExpressID which claims to match upto 700 Million records per sec on an optimized server. But that comes at a price. This is what equity is currently using for their identification system. If your financial power is wanting, then http://www.sourceafis.org/ is your friend. It has a respectable matching speed of about 20K-40K fingerprints per sec on a decent computer. On 2 September 2016 at 11:46, Ndungi Kyalo via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

For biometrics on Android, we worked backwards... Start with the SDK, find an SDK that works natively on Android and that is also within your budget (Futronic <http://www.futronic-tech.com/product_sdk_linux.html> and Neurotech <http://www.neurotechnology.com/verifinger-system-requirements.html#android> a.k.a VeriFinger <http://www.neurotechnology.com/verifinger-fingerprint-components.html#embedded-extractor> come to mind). Then take a note of the Android devices they claim to support. If you are going to use wired connection between the Android device and the scanner, than it is almost certain that you will need the Android device to support OTG. Here is the catch; some people (sorry, I cant find that link right now...) have complained that both the Android OS and hardware manufacturers lie about OTG support, hence the need to use one of the devices the SDK manufacturer "tested" their Android SDK on. It is also possible to use a wireless connection, i.e. a bluetooth scanner, but I dont have much info on this at the moment. I hope this is not too late. I implemented a biometric project recently with u.are.u 4500 digital persona using flexcode SDK and integrated with Microsoft Dynamics navision but I had to import the devices. Remember you will need to buy licences online for a bout USD 35 per device. Good luck! On Sun, Sep 4, 2016 at 8:55 AM, Peter Karunyu via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

This is for a R&D activity with possibility of a bulk purchase on full rollout.
