So far my quest has led to promises but nothing. ooncrete. I got a secugen device that could not be detected on debian Ubuntu or windows 7&10. Access to sdks or technical docs and how-to is scanty and seems that it requires specialised device drivers.

My bet rests on the u.are.u devices(4500 & 5160) that are common in most authentication systems used by medical scheme providers.

From my research, 1:N matching is problematic; 1:1 matching is easier and the app may need tweaking to accommodate this.

An even bigger catch is customization to android devices as the target platform.

Will keep you posted on how it goes..

The ' real world testing'  that's where the catch comes in. Naturally testing should be atleast 3 months before a live launch.

Gadgets fail etc too...

Alvin

Yeah, we did a bit of research. During the development phase, we bought about 3 different models from Amazon, by the time development was complete, we had zeroed in on one, which we then bulk ordered from the manufacturer.

Unfortunately, the simulated real world testing showed the non-technical shortcomings with our choice;

- Users either had to contort their bodies to comfortably place their finger on the scanner surface of the Futronic FS88H, or
- Users had to pick it up, slant it, then place their fingers on the scanner surface

It may seem trivial, but if you have a queue of people waiting to get scanned, frustrations can build up extremely fast, due to a few seconds "lost" during scanning.

Peter I bet alot of research was done before hand.

I have seen many techies 'import' alot of stuff that in the end doesn't work.

Research is KEY  painstakingly :-)

And in our case, we imported directly from the manufacturers.

I happened to have been part of a QA team that was testing a "biometrics module" on a locally developed software, and whichever device you chose, if its going to be used on a flat surface (e.g. a table top or counter), then it is better if the part where the user places their finger is slanted downwards, and not flat.

In our test, this (Secugen Hamster Plus and Hamster IV) was better (less time), this (Futronic FS88H) was worse (more time), in terms of the number of minutes spent by a user to successfully get their finger scanned. All because of the slanting of the scanning surface.

Morning

From experience your supplier will have to import these.

Those who require assistance can Email 'sales@greenline.co.ke'  with your contact details.

Hi Guys,

I am looking for *local* suppliers of USD fingerprint readers similar to the ones used in hospitals when identifying a member of a medical insurance scheme. I have walked around some shops in CBD and most of the attendants dont know where to source them.

The specific models are http://www.crossmatch.com/UareU4500Reader/ and http://www.crossmatch.com/uareu-5160-reader/

This is for a R&D activity with possibility of a bulk purchase on full rollout.

Any leads would be appreciated.
