Mac Book Pro, AlienWare thread discussion: Add Toshiba Qosmio X500 as a serious contender

Sharing some thots. Just finished setting the Toshiba Qosmio X500 laptop for someone and this machine is mad! Specs are Corei7 quad core CPU, 8GB RAM, total 1.2TB hdds and a whooping 18.4inch screen which no other laptop manufacturer besides Asus has come up with. The Toshiba laptop is definately on my wish list. In windows task mananger, you can see the 4X2 cores so you get the display of 8 processors. Amazing sound, full length keyboard, blu-ray, hdmi etc etc. ships with W7HE, 64bit. Downside is the battery life of max 3hrs and 4.6Kgs of weight. A huge upside side is a desktop specs machine thats a portable.

I've come to find on laptops that the biggest bottleneck might actually be the hard disk. What speed? 7200 or 5400? On Sun, Dec 12, 2010 at 10:44 AM, aki <aki275@gmail.com> wrote:

Laptops with screens bigger than 15.4 are hard to carrry around, that is another problem

I'd love to buy an SSD but the costs are outrageous. Especially after local dealers extract their pound of flesh On Sun, Dec 12, 2010 at 12:35 PM, Muoki Maingi <mmviqtah@gmail.com> wrote:

@Rad, the Qosmio X500 laptop that I setup came with 2 X 640GB @5400rpm HDDs but I checked on the toshiba site, SSD is an option too. @Dennis, I'm definately going to get one as soon as I sort out my finances. The problem is KE is the wheel barrow market and not really a credit market, however I'm going to check with the bank on asset loans. Anyway I spent a day with the Qosmio setup and feel the cost it is worth every cent. Toshiba have really gone out on this machine. For me personally, the biggest sell is the high resolution 18.4inch screen because I can move away from desktops. The laptop is intended for gamers but I believe more so for coders, photo editors, web design and developers and because you can multi-task better on a bigger screen'and very fast specs. And I dont mind lugging around a massive tank of 4.6kgs of a laptop rather than have dual screens that I cannot move around. Me thots. :-) Check this out : http://us.toshiba.com/computers/laptops/qosmio/X500 Rgds.

The Qosmio X300 costs about 131k<http://www.chekelea.com/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=302>, so I am guessing the X500 will be more? The 13 inch MBP is about 120k and the M11X is 135k. Now, in my warped sense of explaining computer stuff; the MBP is like a Porsche, refined, cute, head turning and quite powerful. The X500 can be compared to the BWM X Series, big, bad (in a good way) and fast. And the M11X is like.... who am i kidding, there is nothing to compare it with :-) On Sun, Dec 12, 2010 at 3:46 PM, aki <aki275@gmail.com> wrote:

@Daudi, I'm not sure of the nix distros but the X500 comes with 64bit Win7HP and 8GB Ram. With 2X640GB drives, I can already see it being used with Adobe CS3 on 64bit and also a partition to suit the scratch disks. Here is some interesting info from Adobe : http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/401/kb401088.html . On Tue, Dec 14, 2010 at 1:34 PM, Daudi Were <daudi.were@gmail.com> wrote:

Thanks peter for the comparison. makes me wonder why the brutally short battery life for the x500? macbooks always seem to last longer on a single charge than any other laptops ave seen. does windows run too many unnecessary processes or is the battery hardware lower quality? even the regular macbook boasts a ten hour charge even when constantly connected to wifi. I never questioned the client about its use, though there are many uses that I can put the machine too, so already planning ahead on finance options....Just found out that there is something called Asset Financing, goes between 8-10% but need to put time and ground work to get all the details.
