Zuku on Ubuntu (direct without router)

Hi all, I'm using Zuku on Ubuntu connected directly, without a router. It worked fine a few days after the connection then lost network. It says ethernet not connected. I tested the machine on a different Zuku connection with a router and it worked fine, so hardware is working. A MacBook connected directly without router works, so internet connection is working. Zuku customer care are not very helpful so far. Is there anyone with a similar setup? SOS (Saidia Oh Saidia) -- Gichingiri Kuria _________________________________________ www.website.co.ke / www.sokoletu.co.ke

I also had a similar issue: on a fresh Ubuntu "Lucid Lynx" installation, Zuku worked fine to the point of surprising me. Then after a few days it just stopped. I got it to work last week by -and I have no idea whether it is this that worked- deleting the connection profile that I had made (I mean that I had named my connection "zuku"). Upon deleting this, it just worked when I rebooted. I have no idea why. PS I had also tried to mess about with the drivers. Are you using DHCP or did you put the IP, etc in manually? 2010/10/25 Kelvin <kjayanoris@gmail.com>

Not that i have a similar setup but from your description it sounds like its an MDIX issue. Have you tried this with a crossed-cable?. The Mac's have good MDIX auto-cross checking - am not sure about Ubuntu or the card that you have. It would be the 1st place i would start given your scenario. Cheers, Mich

I tried a crossed cable and that didn't work either. I'll opt to get a router. 2010/10/25 Michuki Mwangi <michuki@swiftkenya.com>

My problem is that it works with a router. However, if I connect directly to the radio gadget, it doesn't work. Same story on 2 Ubuntu desktops. No problem with MacBook. I've tried a few suggestions from some forums but no success. Any ideas? 2010/10/28 Mark Mwangi <mwangy@gmail.com>

I dont see why you shouldnt be getting a connection. if you have set it to use dhcp then it should connect you. try deleting the profile for wired connection then unplug, reboot then see if the default settings kick in. . Try checking the Duplex on your ethX interface. Perhaps a duplex mismatch is causing it. It should work with a straight cable. Set your ethX duplex to "auto" and see if that changes the scenario. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Damn!!

I had a similar problem. The issue is not your computer. The Zuku connection at their server end normally caches mac addresses, I don't really know the process but, Sometimes some computers work while some don't. The solution is conect to the connection, clear your config e.g sudo ifdown -a reboot the device while connected to your computer Reconfigure your computer after the zuku device is on sudo ifup -a It may not work immediately but keep trying. If it does not work, call Zuku and tell them to clear their cache on your connection. On Fri, Oct 29, 2010 at 10:59 AM, Gichingiri Kuria <gmail@gichingiri.com>wrote:

Ok so this is interesting - you only seem to have a Unicast IPv6 address. Which means something else might be wrong. What is your netsat -rn (not sure what it should be on ubuntu) am looking to see if you have a default gateway for the IPv6 - maybe wananchi is doing something. Try and disable the IPv6 (though i dont think this is a problem) to see if you will get an IPv4 address with the DHCP. Is there an option for a static? Regards, Mich

Ok so this is interesting - you only seem to have a Unicast IPv6 address. Which means something else might be wrong.

It would be nice if he can show us the same output when he's able to access the Internet (via the router). That way, we can see what IP he gets from the router. Oh, and a traceroute to some host when things are working - then we can see his exit IP from the router. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Damn!!

On a different internet connection, with similar Zuku wimax equipment on similar Ubuntu desktop but with router, I get this: ifconfig eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:13:8f:0d:07:6c inet addr:192.168.1.6 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::213:8fff:fe0d:76c/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:27839 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:19015 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:40362747 (40.3 MB) TX bytes:1453637 (1.4 MB) Interrupt:23 Base address:0x6c00 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:52 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:52 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:4010 (4.0 KB) TX bytes:4010 (4.0 KB) 2010/10/29 Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com>

@Frankline - I tried your way and now the MAC address doesn't show @Mich - I've tried disabling the IPv6, didn't work. Also tried using the IP address, DNS, etc that the MacBook had picked, also didn't work It will be really cool if it worked (and I'm sure someone will benefit) but I want to get some shillings together and buy a router 2010/10/29 Gichingiri Kuria <gmail@gichingiri.com>

Gichingiri, Did you finalize this? I am just curious, not really chasing you:-) -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Damn!!

I got a router and everything worked fine. Was trying to get a cheaper solution which wasn't coming through. 2010/11/30 Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com>
