My problem is that it works with a router. However, if I connect directly to the radio gadget, it doesn't work. Same story on 2 Ubuntu desktops. No problem with MacBook.

I've tried a few suggestions from some forums but no success.
Any ideas?

I tried a crossed cable and that didn't work either.
I'll opt to get a router.

You'll need to get a router? I thought your Ubuntu, with a few tweaks, is a router already:-)
