After a lot of hard work, I have graduated to a normal linux user. still, i am so inexperienced that i have wasted a whole week of person-hours teying to get mysql and vmware tio run in linux before giving up. In both cases, Google assured me that there were more than 2 million other people facing similar problems, with no known straight forward solution. So distinguished Skunklings, I hereby sought your advice on the most suitable linux distribution for linux power users. I would like one with good support, driver support, many applications available (we dont like re-inventing the wheel) etc. I currently use Mandriva, and I am requesting for advice on Mandriva, Fedora, Suse, and the ever popul;ar Unix branched FreeBSD. I might consider Ubuntu, if a strong case is put forward in its case (as you can see, i favor RPMs) Thanks ++; -- with Regards: Explore the Nairobi Economic Law of Price and Time of the Month at my blog: http://gramware.blogspot.com

Ubuntu is a good place to start. but then as with everything else, the flavour is entirely a matter of personal preference. for many that i tried, there is a zealous, almost occultic following to each and depending on your tastes and preferences, each shines in its fort. ive found basic lampp administration easier with ubuntu than mandriva. but then again, that was mdrv spring 2007. Ubuntu is great for newbie, it has a very good packaging system that makes linux a joy.I use that for me laptop but servers work great with gentoo, it is linux-based and also bsd-like and compiles everything from source, great way to learn what is running under the hood. But you would also need a very fast internet connection. At the end of the day as collins said it depends on your taste, welcome to freedom. If u still majorly rpm - then mandriva fedora are closest match for u - they draw a lot from redhat; In both cases there are ample gui tools to get mysql running with less man/hrs. For Mandr* there is the control center; You can use it to install, and run mysql. For Fedora Pirut ; RPM distro provides the service option to managed those daemons - its friendly. There is a webmin <http://www.webmin.com/> rpm package
I would like one with good support, driver support, many applications available
if support is paid talk to me, or source within quite a number of experienced ; Just a thot some distro's are B/W thirsty , to avoid or not depends availabilty of the resource On Sat, Jun 6, 2009 at 10:04 PM, Jamal Mohamed <jamal.worx@gmail.com> wrote:

FEDORA FEDORA !!!! And all will be Gold. just think about it.

Thanks guys. I still do not prefer ubuntu for reasons that I do not know. I may prefer fedora because of its neatness. As for Mandriva, I will continue using it for a while, but every major issues seems to have one major problem with it. As for suse, it seems to be closer to mandriva, but a bit managed. as for now fedora looks attractive. As for freeBSD, it seems that it is not geared for desktop use, but the best for server use. -- with Regards: Read about my 40 seconds as a thief at my blog http://gramware.blogspot.com You can now enquire about Apple future products by sending an email to inoreply@imail.com

In the few seconds that I posted the above, I have done more research, which sadly puts fedora in the same group as freeBSD. the Germans now take the day, and Suse we go. -- with Regards: Read about my 40 seconds as a thief at my blog http://gramware.blogspot.com You can now enquire about Apple future products by sending an email to inoreply@imail.com

If you'd like FreeBSD for Desktop usage, try PC-BSD[1] or DesktopBSD[2]. I'd personally recommend PC-BSD though as its update schedule (to be in sync with the latest FreeBSD release) is much faster. PS: For the record, FreeBSD does not support as much hardware as Linux. You could also try out CentOS, another RHEL variant. Looked neat to me when I saw it in some company's office... On 08/06/2009, Odhiambo ワシントン <odhiambo@gmail.com> wrote:

My two cent's worth: Mandriva->Fedora->Debian_based_distro(; Ubuntu)->Welcome home. When you get tired of doing things over and over....Once you've solved a problem, a personal howto is at hand. The only excuse to do it again would be to help or get paid....In the meanwhile try to conquer more mountains. My take is that all RPM based distros are the same(excluding the management tools...drak*,yast*,system-confi*) Debora and Ian's family will receive you all too well :) /Me 2009/6/6 Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com>
