Skunks, I need to buy a DSLR. I would prefer to get one that will be an all-rounder, from shooting macros (really close-up photos and videos) to shooting video indoors, outdoors (event photography and video). I seek your advice on what options to pursue to get something current while not losing too much money. Suggestions on bundling also welcome, offers to sell too. Bundles would include lighting, sound extensions and different lenses for close-ups and long range. Martin check out Nikon. They have a few offers. The d5500 is well balanced. D7200 is towards the professional cameras. Thanks Athar On Wednesday, March 2, 2016, Martin Gicheru via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Hi Martin, I also recommend Nikon though you are free to choose other brands since they are good also. Start with your budget. How much do you want to use? There's best in class for beginners, enthusiasts, semi-pro and pros. Regards, Alex On Wed, Mar 2, 2016 at 9:28 AM, Athar Ahmad Bhatti via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Thanks Athar, I will check out these two options. I had already noticed the D750. I agree with you Jason, the camera battle is always between Nikon and Canon, then the rest. I will email and see what we can get. Alex, I'm not quite sure I'm fixed on the budget per se. I could be quite flexible, especially since the camera purchase could mean me either getting a good budget that will feel outdated in a few months or a huge spend that would probably be unnecessary. William, I am as basic as they come, but I probably won't be the one operating it. Martin, One more thing is to consider is going either crop or FX (35mm) sensor. Choose one and go with it since you will invest in lenses as well. Well if money is no object here are my thoughts on Nikon :) - D7200 and D800 are good for crop and full sensor respectively - D750 has had some recall issues - can check online - D500 is new and has some good reviews. Can give it some time before getting it though since there's minor possibility of recall as with some new cameras. Canon fans will suggest on their end. Hey... Getting on this a little late but... Don't limit yourself to only Nikon and Canon. Sony has been doing a good job lately... So good have they become that it's now a three-horse race, not anymore a two-horse affair. Here are some <http://www.stuckincustoms.com/2013/07/04/sony-nex-review-nikon-vs/> two <https://www.youtube.com/user/jasonlanierpros> well acclaimed photographers who have adopted Sony cameras (I'm still a Nikon guy by the way...). Final tips: - In photography, you get what you pay for - don't expect stellar performance from cheap lenses. For superb images, you'll pay through the nose (worth it if you ask me) - Get something that you can grow with. If I were you (assuming you're going for Nikon), I'd start with an entrey level full frame camera (FX mount) and upgrade to a semi-pro or pro with time... you'd still be able to use your FX lenses after upgrading. If you start off with cropped sensor cameras, when you get to upgrade to a full frame, you'll have to sell off both your DX camera and DX lenses and buy new FX lenses for your full frame. - You can also try mirrorless cameras. Sony have very good ones, but they cost an arm and a leg. Olympus, Panasonic (I think they have a different brand name for their cameras), Fuji (my next project, God willing) have good mirrorless cameras (these are smaller and lighter than DSLRs, very handy for street photograhy. And I am not talking of point-and-shoot cameras here). Let us know what you choose! Rgds, Me. On 2 March 2016 at 14:30, nerdalf james via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Don't limit yourself to only Nikon and Canon. Sony has been doing a good job lately... So good have they become that it's now a three-horse race, not anymore a two-horse affair. Here are some <http://www.stuckincustoms.com/2013/07/04/sony-nex-review-nikon-vs/> two <https://www.youtube.com/user/jasonlanierpros> well acclaimed photographers who have adopted Sony cameras (I'm still a Nikon guy by the way...).
Final tips:
- In photography, you get what you pay for - don't expect stellar performance from cheap lenses.

Me.

If you want to buy a camera bundle at once with a limited budget I would suggest you check ebay and amazon they have very good offers.
As for the camera a canon 750d rebel t6i as pretty good.

One more thing is to consider is going either crop or FX (35mm) sensor. Choose one and go with it since you will invest in lenses as well.
Well if money is no object here are my thoughts on Nikon :)
- D7200 and D800 are good for crop and full sensor respectively - D750 has had some recall issues - can check online - D500 is new and has some good reviews. Can give it some time before getting it though since there's minor possibility of recall as with some new cameras.
Canon fans will suggest on their end.

Alex

I will check out these two options. I had already noticed the D750.
I agree with you Jason, the camera battle is always between Nikon and Canon, then the rest. I will email and see what we can get.
Alex,
I'm not quite sure I'm fixed on the budget per se. I could be quite flexible, especially since the camera purchase could mean me either getting a good budget that will feel outdated in a few months or a huge spend that would probably be unnecessary.
William, I am as basic as they come, but I probably won't be the one operating it.

Now I'm confused. I was already seeing myself pick the Nikon D7200 crop and was looking at Amazon bundles. Till Simon happened and I'm not sure what I want to pick anymore. So here's the thing. The camera is for video reviews (macros), indoor video interviews and indoor photography for product launches. I want some element of being future-proof, that's why a deal for Nikon D7000 in Nairobi wasn't responded to. They are selling it at Kshs 82k, down some twenty something thousand bob. I advise people on smartphones/laptops, and give pros and cons of each plus a recommended buy. I hope it doesn't feel the same when we are the ones giving advice. Hi,
If you want to buy a camera bundle at once with a limited budget I would suggest you check ebay and amazon they have very good offers.

Alex

Final tips:
- In photography, you get what you pay for - don't expect stellar performance from cheap lenses.

Sorry coming late into the mix, here would be my pointers... A good camera is ... the one in your hand. A good photo is as good as the cameraman (to an extent). I would presume that unless its for show, you are probably starting somewhere and over time hopefully hone your skills. I would suggest looking at everything in perspective. 1: Full frame vs cropped sensors: A full frame is a bigger sensor, captures more details. Full frame here is in comparison to the traditional film size. Full frame therefore would capture more details than a cropped frame. (As a general rule, the bigger the sensor, the more the details it would capture). The comparisons however end there, because for the most part it is about a photo the size of the ones used on billboards, and twice the size of those billboards. The thing to consider when deciding whether to go FX or DX is lens collection. DX have been there for a while, so lots and lots of lenses in the market at good prices. Relatively cheap too. However, moving forward a limitng factor since most glassware would now be built with fx in mind. 2: Nikon Va Canon. Im a die hard Nikon fan, My first camera was a d40 eons back. I however would say this, From experience, Canon gives you more bang for the buck. I would suggest you consider getting a basic canon shooter, with two or three lenses to first hone your skills. There are also exciting mirrorless cameras from Sony and Pentax, technology and miniaturization are bringing in excellent , DSLR or better quality to mirrorless cameras. My recommendation, ignore Brand name, and go for specs. 3: Resources: Research, research, research. There are two excellent resources. one is dpreview.com, the other is this <https://www.youtube.com/user/TheCameraStoreTV> youtube channel. IMO the top contenders would be: Nikon: d7200 d750 d7100 Canon 5dmk3 (Awesome shooter) 7d 6d All the best. Hi Martin, What I've learnt about DSLRs is that the quality of your lenses is what mostly governs the quality of your photos or videos. Camera bodies from enthusiast level to pro mostly improve on ergonomics, speed at which you can shoot and other niche features. I am a Nikon fan so I'll go with the brand I know. Depending on your budget for the camera body, you can go with: 1) Nikon D5500 - Best Nikon semi-enthusiast level camera, great sensor and can compete with the big boys. Also, one of the more portable DSLRs. (Disclaimer: this is what I shoot with) 2) Nikon D7200 - Slightly bigger than the D5500 but with the same features as the D5500. The only difference is that you get more dials and buttons directly on the camera to change things like ISO, shutter speed and aperture quickly while shooting. 3) Nikon D610 - Superb entry level full frame camera. Excellent performance even in darker scenes using high ISOs. As for the camera and lenses, here's what I'd go for: Nikon D5500 or D7200 (both cropped sensors): - 35mm f1.8 Prime lens (this is very sharp and excellent for video. The f1.8 aperture allows for great photos in darker indoor scenes as it lets in more light). Also this should be no more than $200 brand new - Tamron 24-70 f2.8 - Allows in good light and gives you better reach with the zoom - This would be your go to lens for product shots and launches Total should be just over $2000 and you are good for the next five years or more. Once you have shot for a year or two and know exactly what you like, that is when you should upgrade to a full frame. At that time you can sell the D5500/D7200 and the 35mm lens, then get a D610 and a 50mm f1.8 lens. The Tamron 24-70 will work on both cameras. I hope this helps.
IMO the top contenders would be:
Nikon: d7200 d750 d7100
Canon 5dmk3 (Awesome shooter) 7d 6d
All the best.

@Athar Sony does have DSLRs. @Martin If you like it, go for it. As long as you have the right lenses and an understanding of the exposure triangle, you should be able to get the shots you want. I just don't know much about video. Some say that the best camera is the one in your hand (I think they mean skill, but think it's the camera :D). P. S.
