Dear Skunkers; If I bought an old compaq with license sticker, and had a way to legally have the license back to the system, fully activated as was while at the previous users, is it illegal? I know they normally remove the hdd's but the license should be legal, right? I'm about to help a desperate friend but don't want to end up in trouble at some point. Your views? Peter Don't wait for success; hunt it down like there's no tomorrow.

I think it's perfectly legitimate, but ... The questions that I think would arise in case of litigation, imho (and I am not a lawyer, neither do I know how MS thinks), are 1. whether the same key displayed on the sticker is the same one that was used to activate the resident OS 2. how many times MS allows that key to be used to activate windows. I think that if you are able to install using that key on the sticker and be able to activate the OS online, then you are safe - because it's MS systems that do the "Activation'! -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ I can't hear you -- I'm using the scrambler. Skunks, Do licenses go by version. E.g I bought windows 7 licenses then downgrade the computer to Windows XP. Will the licenses be activated. Moha.

I believe that this is perfectly legit, and has been like this ever since MS stopped selling (and supporting) Windows XP. On Mon, Mar 5, 2012 at 00:28, Gate Keeper <mohasq@gmail.com> wrote:

MS has the policy that a license is bound to hardware + user! read their license agreement carefully. That implies that when you sell a computer you are not allowed to sell the windows license as well. Or if you buy a computer with an OEM windows you actually have to buy a new windows license for it. And you cannot sell second hand windows licenses. Or if you buy another windows version you cannot sell the OEM version. Note that not in all countries the above restrictions are legal, so in some countries you can do some of the above, not sure though what the situation in kenya is. If in doubt, follow the license agreement, buy a new license. On Mon, Mar 5, 2012 at 4:45 PM, Paul Roy <roykoikai@gmail.com> wrote:

@Roy, If disk crashes, that means the machine is dead (in MS parlance)?? OEM or not, are you allowed to replace the failed disk and reinstall or you need to buy a new license? I was thinking along those lines. On Mon, Mar 5, 2012 at 16:45, Paul Roy <roykoikai@gmail.com> wrote:
