I beg to differ a bit, for those following developements in Cyber Security, you all know that plans are underway for the formation of the Kenya Computer Emergency Response Centre KCERT which is meant to beef up our response to Cyber Security attacks. I was priviledged to attend one of the Cybersecurity workshops hosted by CCK last year and of which several skunkers were presenting, in laymans terms KCERT will provide an early warning system for impending Cyberattacks since it will be a focal point for various other institutional certs that we will have locally, thats why they have to work with ISPs and other regulators. I am involved in standards developement at Kenya Bureu of Standards ISO 27000 series and the role of the Computer Emergency Response Centres cannot be underestimated, on another note maybe the article was meant to stir debate but that is my humble opinion as a citizen. @ Wash, Just to clarify i don't work for CCK or ITU :-) so i am not defending them, i am responding as a stakeholder who has taken the time and trouble to understand what is going on, for record purposes i participated in the workshop on Cybersecurity having applied thorugh skunkworks and that is where i got to understand what was happening , the debate is about Kenya Computer Emergency Response Centre , the public needs to be given the right information on What KCERT is, its role in the fight against CyberSecurity and how the public can participate, sniffing is there and has always existed but if we dwell on sniffing we are likely to create sensationalism hence defeating the fight against Cybersecurity, let the debate continue.. I agree Wash, i am yet to see the version on BD, but i saw the post on Hot 96 and responded based on what i saw on TV and what i have learnt by participating in the process, i think it is good for guys to attend this stakeholder meetings when they are called so that the right info can be spread out there. For all we know, (Please read I know), this has been ongoing since time immemorial (or at least ever since there was inter-connectivity. Their stating in public that they want to implement it is just a means of justifying what has been happening in the background and a way of trying to cover up for mistakes made by the elite few in the country. There is a lot more than meets the public eye behind this intention to *"setting up a system to spy on private emails, citing a rise in cyber security threats since Kenya entered the global superhighway"*. Privacy went out the door when we decided to use all/any form of technology in the name of staying connected coz that's where the loopholes begin and no one can be absolutely secure unless of course you are using snail mail or Morse code. So let's live with the fact that we will always be prone to spying (either government or otherwise) and just make sure that if you don't want to get spied on, you probably don't need that particular mode of transmission to relay your sensitive information.
