Heheee... I am using Safaricom for Int'l voice and I can tell you it's up, but not satisfactory. I'll contend with it since it's their 2ndary link, but should that really bother a customer?

Every time TEAMS goes down SEACOM is a major beneficiary #imjustsaying

@Haggai There is your conspiracy; Seacom's ships are docking near TEAMS cables ?

I have no info to confirm or deny such claims...neither am I fabricating any such conspiracy theories...but I'm just stating facts as I see them. Every provider I know of at the moment (even Orange at some point) is going through Seacom. Whatever TEAMS loses is gained somewhat by Seacom - in the hundreds of thousands of USD as of last month's outage.

Why can't someone local buy <http://www.maretec.fo/saleslist.htm> those cable repair ships? Maybe Safaricom, they can probably afford it.
It seems we obviously need a diving repair operation around; even if not the whole outfit. Why cant ships be launching from Kenya to other countries; instead of from places like Mozambique. Mozambique? Seriously ??

It's expensive owning and maintaining a ship for one cable, sort like owning a personal mail server

Dennis, I believe the idea was to own the ship and use it for our own repairs as well as rent it out for other repairs. On Wed, May 9, 2012 at 12:39 PM, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

Competitively? Remember current owners have recovered some element of fixed cost . Needs capital investment form guys who it is not their core business to repair cables

I think it is not normal for a sub-marine cable to be regularly down as we have been experiencing with TEAMS. So that's why it does not make sense to own the cable repair shop as it will only be needed probably once in a couple of years. With TEAMS, is has become a weekly occurrence. I think this year alone TEAMS has been more down than up. Either there is something tragically wrong with the whole conception to implementation of TEAMS or it is just the nature of public-private partnership to just never work. I am now actually have second thoughts about the proposed PPP of the 4G network in KE. I would prefer it be owned and maintained by one operator.

Incidentally, what happens to the ship(s) that cause the issue by cutting the cables? Do they just go on their merry way after causing such havoc? Are they *heavily* fined? Goods confiscated? Thrown in the brig? And any word from KPA on what the ship was doing in a zone that is supposed to be restricted? On Wed, May 9, 2012 at 2:37 PM, Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:

you read my mind. Fish stocks around the Somali coastline had rebounded very well after nearly being decimated by foreign operations who used large trawlers until the threat of piracy drove them away. We should hire some to guard the cables. BR S

in regards to the above, i had read a very interesting article on this forum about KIXP by a gentleman (cant remember his name)who said he was one of the founders of KICTANET and the KIXP,, and from my relatively layman point of understanding, if we had our local sites routed through KIXP, we wouldnt be having this problem accessing local sites, correct me if im wrong by the way!my question is, would we be experiencing slow speeds when accessing sites for local companies routed through other exchange points outside the country or would it be faster if the sites were routed through KIXP.or rather...would the fibre cut affect local traffic if the KIXP was utilized for the local traffic? -- It is difficult to see the picture when you are inside of the frame

You're not wrong per se, but I'll help you clarify this - a site being "local" may simply mean belongs to a "Kenyan" entity - it could be hosted anywhere in the world. You need to differentiate between "local" in this context, and "locally hosted" which refers to the location of the server the site resides on. Locally hosted sites, say a web server in KDN's data center, or KRA online services, should not be affected by this outage if the networks they're on are connected to the KIXP, provided the network you (the user) are on is also connected to the KIXP. and oh...the gentleman you refer to is one Brian Longwe. note also some ISP's (the stupid ones who shouldnt have clients really) issue DNS servers to clients hosted/routed abroad so while the content server is local, you still get affected. On Thu, May 10, 2012 at 1:16 PM, joel eliakim <joeliakim@gmail.com> wrote:

Unfortunately I have had so many issues with local DNS servers hosted by ISP's, I simply don't trust them anymore. *MOMBASA, 17th May 2012...* Repair works on the TEAMS (The East African Marine Systems) Cable that was damaged on 26th April 2012 have now been completed. The cable cut which occurred at the Kenyan coast damaged a crucial link for the bulk of internet and international voice traffic in the region. The repair works were successfully completed by a team of experts from France Telecom Marine Services at 4:00pm on 17th May 2012. Commenting on the repairs work, TEAMS General Manager Joel Tanui said, “This second cut was due to the multiple damages inflicted on the TEAMS undersea cable by a port dredging ship in February this year. In this instance we had to engage professional divers to ensure that all the damaged portions of the cable were properly replaced. In order to reduce the down time of the cable the TEAMS Cable consortium constituting both the Kenyan shareholders and UAE’s Etisalat made a decision to secure an cable repair ship from France Telecom Marine Services, as all the cable ships for our undersea maintenance company E-Marine were tied up with the repairs of other damaged cables (EASSY, EIG, SMW3,). The repair cable ship arrived in Mombasa on 12th May 2012 and started the repair work the following day”. TEAMS Board Chairman, Bob Collymore said, “We are deeply grateful for the patience that our shareholders and customers have shown during this time. The TEAMS board is now considering taking additional measures to guarantee the stability of the cable system by splitting the cable in the deep sea so as to have two separate landing points that will serve to mitigate the risks associated with the current Mombasa landing point. ” It is estimated that the repairs of the cable, including costs for temporary traffic restoration via other cables during the TEAMS cable outage is about USD 3 Million (Kshs 250 Million), excluding loss of business as a result of heavily constrained bandwidth supply to contracted customers. A landmark public-private partnership, TEAMS is the premier undersea cable system serving the entire East African region. Besides the Government of Kenya, the other shareholders in the TEAMS consortium include Safaricom, Jamii Telecom, Wananchi Group, Essar Kenya, Kenya Data Networks, Access Kenya, Telkom Orange and Bandwidth & Cloud Services.

Damn! It costs USD$ 3 million to repair a cable? Thats a nice income for someone in .ke who might happen to have a cable repair ship... And it seems business is brisk seeing as E-Marine was fully engaged elsewhere. On Thu, May 17, 2012 at 4:24 PM, Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:

@Peter, unfortunately, I've been digging a lot on the web and I cant find a mention of an indicative price range of building/buying a cable repair ship, but from this list<http://www.iscpc.org/information/Cableships_Page.htm>, you can see that some private shipping companies actually own more than one, so surely they can't be that expensive, no? Considering that our annual budget is hovering around 1 trillion, I am convinced that we can afford one, that or I have a serious case of day dreaming!
