quote of the day - ICT sector

Hehehehe! This caught my attention, as reported in print media : " We have already doubled our customers bandwidth speeds completely free of charge - effectively an immediate 50% discount in the price per Megabyte " said Mr Somen of AK. Does this mean : a) Double the speeds but same price? b) 50% discount to whom? To ISP or End user? c) Who decided for end users that they needed double bandwidth? Why not stay on the same package at half the price then? If anyone is on the list using AK 1024k/1024k link, please share your monthly payment price for cost analysis. So for example KDN offer uncontented Seacom 1024k/1024k @ 600usd/month, then a shared double bandwidth 2048k/2048k with access kenya should cost a maximum of 600USD/month. This should be the case. If you are paying higher, then you need do a cost analysis asap. Pls share your monthly rates to allow for tabulation of real costs as they should be now. Rgds.

another telco also said that they had covered the whole country with their gsm network. i dont think they cover half of what saf does. may be telcos have a tradition of been creative with grammar On 02/09/2009, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

Dennis, dont be so sure...lets have people confirm if they've actually covered the country and how strong the signal is...Thats my main concern since they are the cheapest so far, i'd not mind "KUVUKA" On Wed, Sep 2, 2009 at 10:40 AM, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

at some place in ukambani, i am covered, but no edge at them moment, and they arent sure when it will be on. between nairobi and kisii, theirnetwork dissapears before limuru and only reappears when you are well inside kisii town. there are many BSTs still under construction along the road though. 2 weeks ago, the area beyond masinga beyond and inclusive of kitui wasnt covered. edge is shaky past Ku. on the positive side I have seen increasing coverage over august, but i still think the announcement was premature. keep a saf line as fail safe, and stock enough credit when within the city centre. As law students will tell you, adverts are mis leading, and taken as that legally. On 02/09/2009, kennedy kariuki <kkairu@gmail.com> wrote:

Not necessarily. They need to mount equipment...

How many sites does safcom have in their coverage? As for topup they had launched an e-topup <ENEZA> i.e no scratch cards. I wonder how that is doing??

in the above mentioned areas, saf has the widest coverage, including some quite remote locations in kitui near the kitui national reserves. i have never seen an eneza vendor, guess it suffers from adoption problems similar to zain jaza jaza On 02/09/2009, kennedy kariuki <kkairu@gmail.com> wrote:

Could be an issue with their marketing strategy for all their products..They are not really felt by the consumers Just wanted to know how many sites safcom have for the whole country...1000????

saf have 3G which uses up more BTS than 2.x G. lest we forget, this thread is about marketing antics, esp AK and their Celtel like antics of short changing consumers by decididing what consumers want and giving offers that arent really worth what they sound like. I am a total newbie to telecoms so please enlighten me on this method i am thinking of as a way to truly know the coverage of any network operator: 1. Each operator has a finite number of base stations. 2. The exact physical location of each base station is know and is static, i.e. BTS do not move around :-) 3. The effective radius of transmission of each BTS is also known Therefore, assuming that operators do not share BTS's, the exact coverage of each operator can be mapped with an extremely high degree of accuracy and backed by facts. Should an operator then say that they cover a certain area, a smart journalist/skunk can then proceed to ask them, "how can you cover area X while the nearest BTS is Y kilometres away, given that the maximum allowed radius of coverage of each BTS is Z kilometres"? Are the above assumptions correct? On Wed, Sep 2, 2009 at 12:11 PM, kennedy kariuki <kkairu@gmail.com> wrote:
