Jailbreaking an iPhone and getting it to work

Helloz, A colleague bought an iPhone 4, 16GiB which we are almost turning into a paperweight, bar for advise on a less tricky way to get it working. I know I could google, but I am banking on the experienced resources available on this list- Hello Ok3ch! Now, this paperwight-to-be came with firmware 4.3.3 and was locked to AT&T network. My colleague got it Jail-broken (untethered Jailbreak I hear) and it was working. One day the guy decided that he doesn't want to use iPhone anymore so decided to pass it across to missus, but before this he decided to wipe the damn thing by resetting to factory default! He connected it to iTunes, which then updated the device to firmware 5.0.1. It rendered the phone err..errr. okay, not quite useless but it ceased to work as a phone. Now, another creative colleague is trying to get the phone working. He has jailbroken it again, but now when we put in a SIM Card, the phone does not "see" the network - No Service, that is. And no, it's not in Aircraft mode. Is there a way to get the device to run as a phone or is it that state where it should be used as a camera and iPod only? Naomba serikali yenu inisaidie.. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ I can't hear you -- I'm using the scrambler. Big mistake playing around with iTunes upgrade when your phone is not factory unlocked! First thing it messes up with is the baseband, and there are some basebands you can jailbreak but you cannot unlock, especially with >iPhone4 and > iOS5. Unfortunately, I got tired with playing around jail breaking & unlocking so I now buy only factory unlocked iPhones :-) ./Ok3ch Sent from my iPad On Mar 22, 2012, at 2:15 PM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com> wrote:

Wash, Jailbreaking alone does not unlock the phone, but just makes it possible t install UltraSn0w that unlock the phone. In your friend's case, he maybe be in some trouble. The baseband (think of it as the modem that does the actual network connectivity) that comes with iOS 5.0.1 is not unlockable, not now for sure. Was the iPhone 4 bought contract from AT&T? If so, even AT&T will not unlock it. There is an expensive solution called Garvey SIM, which is hardware based, but at least it will work. http://www.unlockturbosim.com/

A bit of advise for anyone planning on buying a new iPhone. Always buy you phone from Apple rather than carriers such as AT&T. With the carriers, even if you pay full price, the phone will still remain locked to their network forever. Even when on contarct and the contract expire, most wil refuse to unlock. This applies to most carries, AT&T and even Orange in Kenya. Some carrier in Europe do unlock iPhone, some for a fee, some after you hassle them. See here a story of how Tim Cook had to interve for AT&T to unlock a customer's iPhone who had moved to Canada. http://9to5mac.com/2012/03/20/tim-cook-convinces-att-to-unlock-customers-iph... Sadly Tim can't do this for everyone. Truth be told it may never be possible again to unlock the newer phones even older phones shipping with iOS 5 and above.

I fully agree with Okech & Phillip.. Avoid locked iPhones where possible A'way.. let me get you properly 1. Jailbreak ... Done 2. Was the Unlock done and if so how? Did he launch Cydia and tried to unlock via UltraSnow? Hello Philip, The phone is jailbroken, but it's the Baseband which is locked. Not sure this statement makes sense. My understanding is that we need to unlock the baseband. Something like changing the baseband from 04.11.08 to 04.10.01 or lower.... Yes, its possible, only if the iOS is compatible with the device, and you have saved SHSH using Tiny Umbrella - The SHSH must actually been saved before upgrading, so if you had no idea, then you never save them, unless maybe Cydia saved them for you. Anyway, I can help you by looking at the phone and see if I can help - you know how to find me :-) ./Ok3ch On Thu, Mar 22, 2012 at 5:24 PM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com>wrote:

Will still be tricky. Baseband downgrade is tricky and risky But if it was jail broken before, it maybe possible to downgrade to the iOS it was jailbroken in using Saurik's signing server. Cydia has been saving the SHSH blogs. I can look at it and advise. Sent from my iPhone On Mar 22, 2012, at 18:13, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com> wrote:

Anyway, I can help you by looking at the phone and see if I can help - you know how to find me :-)

Jailbreaking alone does not unlock the phone, but just makes it possible t install UltraSn0w that unlock the phone.

Hello Philip,
The phone is jailbroken, but it's the Baseband which is locked. Not sure this statement makes sense. My understanding is that we need to unlock the baseband. Something like changing the baseband from 04.11.08 to 04.10.01 or lower....
Alternatively, I think I need to downgrade from firmware 5.0.1 to 4.3.5, but there is this fear that Apple will not "sign it" - whatever that means.
Is it possible to downgrade to some earlier firmware and get the phone working?
