Would like to appreciate all the Sys Admins out there who have kept the country connected, in as much as they are doing their job. Kudos. To creative movie going techies, is there another way this situation can be helped? I am getting nervous with every passing minute. I am told it's a military strategy to wear down the terrorists but we do have injured hostages. Would jamming the network around that area do? Is there possibility the gang are communicating with the outside world and can we cut that off? Do we have thermal cameras to detect the positions of the hooligans? 3D artists to assist in visualizing the building schematics? What can the IT community do to help? Of course in addition to what we have done and are still doing?

This is not Techie but may be BioMedTech What if the military uses a tranquilizer agent like aesthetic gas by infiltrating the air conditioner pipes. I understand the amount usable is a challenge but will it work?????? My ignorant medical perspective thinking... On Mon, Sep 23, 2013 at 10:08 AM, Tech List Kenya <techlistkenya@gmail.com>wrote:

WILL fail badly if the gang have rigged explosives with dead mans' switches. There is a need to establish the kind of gear, arms, explosives etc in place. Also, as you point out, getting the dosage just right is really tricky. //MB On Mon, Sep 23, 2013 at 10:31 AM, Mickey Mickey <michaelakunga@gmail.com>wrote:

Its not as simple as you think. - Sleeping gases? If the wrong dose is applied it can kill... remember there are hostages. The dosage of the gas depends on the body weight/size etc. Get the picture? - Thermal Cameras? Unless the heat radiation is powerful enough to go through a motar/concrete wall. That amount of heat will cook everyone. - 3D artists? For what reason at this point other than for show? I am sure the authorities can make sense of the 2D plans just as any construction worker ----- Original Message ----- | From: "Mickey Mickey" <michaelakunga@gmail.com> | To: "Skunkworks Mailing List" <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> | Sent: Lunes, 23 de Septiembre 2013 8:31:26 | Subject: Re: [Skunkworks] IT role in the #Westgate Attack | This is not Techie but may be BioMedTech | What if the military uses a tranquilizer agent like aesthetic gas by | infiltrating the air conditioner pipes. Wearing them down? Maybe mentally, not physically as they most likely have plenty of food and water (Nakumatt, cafes etc) to last weeks. Jamming networks might be two-edged - it will also disable any communications by hostages/hiding survivors with the outside world. What if the gang decide to negotiate with the authorities? IT-centric options MAY be pretty limited at this point IMO. //MB On Mon, Sep 23, 2013 at 10:08 AM, Tech List Kenya <techlistkenya@gmail.com>wrote:

I like Mickey's idea. Black out both victims and the terrorists. Unfortunately we don't know at this point what gear they have. Maybe wako na gas masks. Secondly, Westgate is a large mall so it might be hard to conc the whole place On Mon, Sep 23, 2013 at 10:34 AM, motobaridi <motobaridi@gmail.com> wrote:

@Tech List Me thinks it is time we got ideas from nature. We can develop small mimiature machines to mimick the bees, wasps e.t.c We have them loaded with cameras and remote control. Develop a sting capability to hold any chemical including a dose of Cyanide. In case of westgate, we would have released 1000 of them inside (like bees). From outside we guide them to the targets. Once a target is identified, a sting is delivered Do you think this would be viable? Am considering it for my phd thesis. @Obayi I had noted that challenge of course.... @Techies I HOPE the state learns the importance of simulating such attacks in training the defense personnel and critically setting a bar higher for the staff of such units. Based purely on what I have seen in *movies* and *video games*, IMHO, I think that tactical intelligence in such a situation as this would be useful in identifying who is where and what are they capable of... And I found this <http://www.intelspy.com/recospycarwb.html>... a radio controlled "toy" car with 75 feet range, microphone, video and infra red. Now, this is considered a toy, I am pretty there are more bad ass versions of this for non-toy usage. So, drop a couple hundred of these literally everywhere in the building, the bad guys can only destroy so many before one of them captures useful intelligence. Possibly have some dev at DOD whip up a grid algorithm to control the toys, so that they cover the most ground without overlapping. And if one is feeling particularly sinister, they can be rigged with explosives, and be used in a *kamikaze* style of operation. I am also pretty sure that RC quadrocopters (like this<http://www.geekosystem.com/mini-quadrocopter/>, and this <http://www.geekosystem.com/robot-copter-sushi-waiters/>) equipped with surveillance gear might also be useful. Its interesting what sort of crap one can pickup from movies, and attempt to apply it to solve real life problems, especially where conventional solutions seem to be taking 3 days too long... My deepest condolences to those who have been affected by this tragedy, may you find peace and comfort in your hearts. On Mon, Sep 23, 2013 at 12:27 PM, Okechukwu <okechukwu@gmail.com> wrote:

Speaking of which, what about all those "elite" squads we have had around? Aren't they "elite" enough to handle these kinds of situations? //i use the term "elite" very loosely here... On Mon, Sep 23, 2013 at 11:26 AM, Vincent Kiama <vinikiama@gmail.com> wrote:
