I went to the Safaricom shop in Sarit this evening and asked which Android phones they had available. I was shown a number but not the IDEOS. I then specifically asked for the IDEOS - the sales person said they had none in stock and in fact had never stocked them. I inisted that they had sold some earlier in the day and asked him to check. I almost had to show him Moses' email to convince him. So he went into the back and lo and behold he found they do actually stock them and do have them on sale. He said he had no idea they were there! I was a little bit suspicious of that as he looked like the "first body" of the sales people at that shop. Unless someone is keeping the information away from some of the staff which is equally dodgy. Lots of people were buying the Nokia C3s which are 10k i.e/ 1.5k more expensive that the IDEOS. He did let me know that there are only 6 pieces left, so if you want one better be quick. I doubt they will be any left by Saturday evening. -- Pamoja e:daudi.were@gmail.com <e%3Adaudi.were@gmail.com> skype: d.were

I think they are deliberately hoarding them so that they sell other less performing phones. Based on the specs, this phone is a better deal than a 60k blackberry Kev On Fri, Jan 7, 2011 at 8:58 PM, Daudi Were <daudi.were@gmail.com> wrote:

Kevin, Please convince me about that assertion and I'll get my Huawei kesho. I have and E72 and S8003 to discard in that case. @ Odhiambo Once you exprience Android 2.2 running apps in all its glory you will realize that Nokia/ Blackberry have miles to go . I also have an E72 and compared to a far much cheaper huawei i bought for my wife in December , my Nokia e72 feels like a Con Job. At last!!!!!! Wow, all the good stuff happens when I'm away - I managed to get my E5 (thanks Gichingiri!) at FoneXpress when I was in Nbi two weeks ago - the damn thing saved my beef when I got lost driving in Jo'Burg at 2:30am (don't ask what I was doing awake at that hour) - I opened the Nokia Maps - told it "drive home" (and thank God I had been messing around with the gadget in the morning and saved a petrol station near my house as "home"!) Anyway - I'm glad to hear the IDEOS is (finally) available - can someone nab one for me and hold it - I'm back in Nbi on the 20th Jan for 2 days before I lift off for other parts of Africa. right now the E5 is saidia'ing me to navigate roads in Mauritius - esp in the Port Louis CBD which treacherously difficult.... Forgot to mention that the Nokia E5 is going for Ksh 20,999 at FoneXpress - I found it in the duty free at JKIA going for $490 dollars!!!!!! When I asked them why it was cheaper in town - the daft kubaff said "Those phones in Nakumatt don't have duty!" LoL - I just thanked the guy and walked away before I burst out laughing - where do you start with a dummy like that? Bwahahahahaha! Duty free is just a brand... its always more expensive in most of the products. Where else do you think they get cash to afford rent at the airport? David. On Sun, Jan 9, 2011 at 12:08 PM, Brian Munyao Longwe <blongwe@gmail.com>wrote:

The IDEOS is going like hot cakes - just got 2 units for myself and a pal. Sarit center is out of stock already so I went to westgate...and the sales guy there tells me they had 1000 units in the morning and they only have 65 remaining! Already seeing some features that put my N97 to shame =)

FYI - Shops in tao are the ones running for them ...then resell at crazy prices !! On Mon, Jan 10, 2011 at 3:03 PM, Haggai Nyang <haggai.nyang@gmail.com> wrote:

Mark all
@conrad et al, I can't give a position on battery life as I've only had it for 3 hours but the build is all-plastic but solid...with a nice soft matte finish at the back. I'd advise you get a slip-in case as you carry it in your pocket, however it does not look prone to scratches that much if you're a careful user. UI is faster than my N97, strangely...button response is solid for the call/end and 'arrow' keys...the tactile response is also solid. I haven't had to repeat a keypress as often as I would on n97. I've also tested on a heavy page (about 2mb) and it loaded well without hiccups...something that was a hit-and-miss with the n97 - used to get a lot of 'memory full' messages. Typing messages on it is also easier than expected, even if you misspell you get the suggestions at the top of the keyboard - android fans know this very well. I also love the fact that it uses the microusb standard like n97, data cables are interoperable and it charges directly from USB as expected. Screen resolution is not as good as n97 but it's better than I expected...unless you are migrating from an iphone 4 :D One small issue I had was how to transfer my 1300+ contacts from symbian to android, here's a mini howto: 1. Go to Contacts on your symbian device and select Options > Mark/Unmark 2. Then select Options > Copy business card > To other memory > (select your memory card here). It might take a bit of time as each contact is exported as a .vcf file 3. Connect your symbian phone to computer via USB and navigate to the mem card, it will be under the folder structure /Others/Contacts/ 4. Connect your android to computer and Turn on USB storage and paste the vcf files under a new directory you create (you can name it anything you like) 5. Go to contacts on android and press the menu button, then select Import/Export > Import from SD card. It will search the card for any vCard data. 6. Once found it will ask you whether you want to import one vcard, import multiple vcard files or all vcard files. Watch the progress bar as it imports and voila! Honestly for 8,500 you get a phone with GPS, wifi 802.11n, 3MP camera and android to boot...it's a bargain!

Guys I'm simply drooling and have turned green with envy at all you lucky folk who have managed to buy this HINDIOS (IDEOS in Kamba!) Woiye is there someone who can reserve one for me? I'm back from Mauritius and SA on the 20th - please please please please please? I can add kitu kidogo on top for the favour (maybe 1k) [?] In fact I noticed that when they launched they showed different colors - if there is a njelo (yellow!) one available I will be ecstatic as not only will the tech features meet my myriad of needs but the color will seriously fulfil my intense kamba compulsions! The problem is not Google. The problem is what the manufacturers do with the Android prior to putting it on the device! Not really Rad!, I meant to say that I think Google was itself involved not only in putting the logo on the back cover but also in "what manufacturers do with the Android prior to putting it on the device". Consider a big part of the manufacturers Google, and with the vigour with which they are pushing this device (Google IO, price subsidies, unlocked) they will most likely want to follow up with updates and goodies to keep the local Android fan from straying. I think its natural. PS -> Ok, the exclamation mark at the end of your name/pseudonym gives the impression that I was shouting, not really. Just being precise about whom am addressing :-) On 13 January 2011 06:49, Rad! <conradakunga@gmail.com> wrote:

As of now NO! you cant upgrade the phone. In future.... possibly No! (My Opinion) why? 1) They dont have a consumer tool such as samsung kies that can upgrade firmware. This phone is bare bones 2) They seem to put all their effort to X5 and X6 which will run gingerbread. 3) Africa seems to get the last of android updates. this phone was released in US as T-Mobile Comet on November 2010 4) Its a low price phone doesn't make business sense... the support required would be enormous 5) The phone seems to struggle with its current processor. Now you know why flash and angry birds cant run. An upgrade would be overkill for its tiny processor.. Lets just say its perfect as it is. All is not lost however... some hacker may just upgrade his phone and post the firmware on the internet. My 2 cents MK On Thu, Jan 13, 2011 at 2:28 PM, Rad! <conradakunga@gmail.com> wrote:

Now you know why flash and angry birds cant run. An upgrade would be overkill for its tiny processor..
Lets just say its perfect as it is.
All is not lost however... some hacker may just upgrade his phone and post the firmware on the internet.

Well, the LG Optimus looks like a contender, http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_gt540_optimus-pictures-3081.php, save for Android 1.6 (Upgradeable though), bad design (Seriously, were all the S. Huawei IDEOS was once rumoured to be THE "Most eagerly anticipated phone" ever, especially on the Kenyan market. I guess it has lived up to its name. Being a proud (not so much now) owner of a Huawei Joy a.k.a Vodafone 845, I just feel cheated and stolen from by Safcom. I would be having two handsets now, one for the left hand, the other for the right given that I bought my equally capable Droid at 16k 5sok :D

Hi Claire, I got lost driving in the middle of Johannesburg on Wednesday night - at 2.30am - if it wasn't for the GPS function on the Nokia E5 I would have been in a real mess. I had already been driving around for 2 hours trying to figure my way back to the house where I'm staying - then I thought to myself, never used this "Maps" application on the phone, let me try it out - luckily I had been messing around with it earlier in the day and had saved a petrol station near the house - it gave me step by step directions: a nice lady voice saying "after 300metres, turn left; after 2 km keep left and take the exit" - until I arrived. Turns out I was more than 30km away from my destination - and headed in the wrong direction! So from that experience, GPS is a must for me! I had a lot of fun on this list and I definitely learnt so much within the many months I have been here. I appreciate all the help you have given me on list and off list. I am very sorry if I caused any inconvenience See you, until we meet again digitally or otherwise... You have been a good crowd:-) Claire. --end quote--

Installing Angry Birds on IDEOs - Download & Install from Market - go to settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Angry Birds > click "Move to Phone" Button - Run Angry Birds. - When you hear the intro song lock the screen by pressing the power button. - Open the display and VOILA!!! Game refresh rate is not the best but playable and enjoyable -- for those who need that extra cpu Juice for game-play you can try overclocking and rooting !! Warning your on your own. You must know what you are doing Download z4root.1.3.0.apk from http://www.mediafire.com/u8150 Download setcpu_2.04.apk from http://www.mediafire.com/u8150 Frankly, i don't see any difference probably 10% better performance. Isnt it surprising that Safaricom and Huawei are selling 3 phones with basically the same specs at different prices:- Huawei u8820 - 27000+ Vodafone 845 - 12,999 Huawei IDEOS - 8,500 All the processors are 528MHz (Qualcomm MSM7200A) and only the U8820 has a larger screen size, otherwise they all dientical

I suspect that the initial delay in availing the IDEOS was due to vf845 and u8220 stock that needed to move out of the way first. Now with the IDEOS in te market, they'll probably be stuck with these 2 models for good. On 17 January 2011 16:03, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

For sure they aren't going to /dev/null Simply put, the phone appeals across the *devide*. It only goes to prove that software is a bigger pulling factor than hardware, which I think is a step in the right direction. Before android I would be caught dead with a Huawei phone.

Good stuff Haggai. Looking forward to snatching up one of my own. On Mon, Jan 10, 2011 at 6:31 PM, Haggai Nyang <haggai.nyang@gmail.com>wrote:
Screen resolution is not as good as n97 but it's better than I expected...unless you are migrating from an iphone 4 :D
One small issue I had was how to transfer my 1300+ contacts from symbian to android, here's a mini howto:
1. Go to Contacts on your symbian device and select Options > Mark/Unmark > Mark all 2.
