If you want to get rich off of ICT in Kenya...

You must: 1. Target broad niches - Hypertargeting will not work for Africa. The rewards are too small. 2. At the very least, have a business that will scale regionally - Kenya's 40 million people will never put you in the Silicon Valley league, but East Africa's 142 million people could. That is all I have to say.

are you rich off this strategy? On Tue, Jun 28, 2011 at 9:13 PM, Webmaster <webmaster@kenyanlyrics.com>wrote:

I believe you can never get rich off ICT in Kenya unless you get dubious tenders to supply computers at 20k when you buy them at 30k and even fail to supply and pocket the money. And I decided to be rich so am leaving IT :-) ./Ok3ch On Tue, Jun 28, 2011 at 10:04 PM, Webmaster <webmaster@kenyanlyrics.com> wrote:

I think it depends on your target market and your definition of rich. If my definition of rich is the ability to buy a new $3499 Area-51 ALX PC every month, then a number of ICT techies are indeed rich. You mean to tell me that the nice folks over @ SevenSeas, CraftSilicon, AT etc are not rich? One common trend I have noticed with these top firms is that they target the top end of the market, not the common mwananchi or SME. For example, when Kenya Power has a contract of supply of 10,000 computers, and a private company gets the contract and supplies only 500 computers and makes money out of not supplying 9,500 computers and since he's 'connected' no questions asked - private sector it is! ./Ok3ch On Wed, Jun 29, 2011 at 9:53 AM, Peter Karunyu <pkarunyu@gmail.com> wrote:

Just get a product that Kenyans will give you 10 bob a day. Assuming half of the 40 million feel good enough about the product to continue supporting it and have the philanthropy. Then as webmaster says, go on and target EA and beyond. Imagine how much money the betting companies are making. Just reduce the cost to rope in more people and then employ a skunk to run your simple office network. /Bonz On Wed, Jun 29, 2011 at 10:59 AM, Peter Muchemi <pmuchemi@gmail.com> wrote:

You can get rich if you build your product well and target non corrupt fellows... I agree, there are some who are corrupt, but there are several, especially in the SME space, who just want their SLA's met... It takes time to grow business, but it's more sustainable... Very well said Phares. I'm sure this group has enough of us looking forward to this kind of portal - the standards will definately save people money and make the market style up. Why don't you start this as an initiative. I've seen campaigns against malpractices - but this one will hit the necessary spots. -- Regards, Mike Muraguri Skype: mickie.mic M: + 254 722 799445

Nice put - and the portal can't exist without all our input - maybe start a new thread and let all contribute and give testimonials, I sure will try to do the same. ./Ok3ch On Wed, Jun 29, 2011 at 7:26 PM, Mike Muraguri <mickie.mic@gmail.com> wrote:

There is http://www.startupindex.co.ke/ where we were invited to register our start-up business and which I personally did. I did not know what the real agenda for the site was, but if possible such a site can be expanded to include rating of the registered businesses as far as customer satisfaction is concerned. My thoughts. -- Ngũgĩ Kĩmani | Fundi wa Mitambo | 0772 576846 | http://www.mafundi.co.ke/home On 29 June 2011 19:26, Mike Muraguri <mickie.mic@gmail.com> wrote:

Jay Bhalla (lurking on the list) created the site... It's one of the purposes in the longer term... I'm guessing we can add a feature for supplier tracking... On Thu, Jun 30, 2011 at 10:42 AM, Ngũgĩ Kĩmani <ngugi@mafundi.co.ke> wrote:

I totally disagree with the initial hypothesis of this thread You can even microtarget in kenya, nairobi and dare I say even buru buru alone. If you have an app that targets 1000 subscribers who pay you 500 bob a month , how much is that? Dont bother going east africa if you havent even conquered your backyard. Kenyans are just too lazy to create value, people want quick riches hence the corruption movement. On Fri, Jul 1, 2011 at 12:57 PM, Mike M. <mmycool@gmail.com> wrote:

Launch a .co.ke first, then expand to the rest of East Africa. Second, if there's anyone between the two of us who is looking for quick money, it's you. You're talking about a whole company making a paltry 500, 000 a month off of 1000 clients in Buruburu, I'm talking about a tactic that can see you make a billion shilling exit... Hmmm...

@Joram, I am looking that the list of things i pay 500 or more for per month and all of them seem like necessities, rent, water, stima, fare/fuel. but then i guess thats where innovation comes in, some brilliant techie makes that awesome 'thing' which i gotta keep paying for over and over again, something i cant do without... I've been reading The Facebook Effect<http://www.facebook.com/thefacebookeffect>, and a few things stand out: - No quick cash mentality. Money was not their primary motivation. Zuckerberg wanted 'a more open society'. Probably still isn't. If it was, they would have sold out ages ago. - They worked really really hard. - Having the 'conditions' right and taking advantage of them. Time, Network, Market, Skills etc - Learning from the mistakes of others - apparently friendster.com was such a hit initially that its servers ground to a halt... I agree with Joram we need to create value. e.g a product not just a program (or website) -- Josiah Mugambi On Fri, Jul 1, 2011 at 6:48 PM, Peter Karunyu <pkarunyu@gmail.com> wrote:
