I bought the below device from Bestelll with the sole aim of linking my DVD player, USB via DVD player and get TV on my monitor. However, it suffers from a variety of shortfalls including: - poor picture quality - poor design(too many buttons) - poor User Interface https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-oPtNHgoESHg/TvA26bftuwI/AAAAAAAAAwc/ka1tt... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-opLyHFi2_FY/TvA26XPlXFI/AAAAAAAAAwg/pzDEh... Wondering if there's a way that one can improve the picture quality, or is it a matter of importing chips. Wonder about the possibility of doing your own such device with chips that provide TV, USB, Analog video in and sound out , and possibly have an OS such as Android . Would make a great FAB labs project -- with Regards: blog.denniskioko.com <http://www.denniskioko.com/>

I would still like to look into the cost and challenge of a DIY device

For starters, invite @Aki into it. You may have killed two birds with one stone: 1. DIY with flying colors 2. Getting to meet the faceless guy finally. Go to www.mustek.co.ke and buy one of the TV boxes that they sell and do your thing with it. On Tue, Dec 20, 2011 at 16:47, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

If I invite Aki, I am afraid I will have thousands of pages explaining the theory behind the chips, the sourcing of elements, patents that may be breached and other technical documentation, without a device :-) Don't see any product on the Mustek page, plus I am afraid it may be from the same factory and of the same quality as the Intex device I have. Why do people buy the breadbaords and trhe soldering bits, and the chips? On 20 December 2011 16:54, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi @Dennis, LOL! I'll never mind if we reverse engineer the heck out of many systems, code or processes for localization with a local touch or use. Hey, if a genius out there can do it, kwani what is stopping us? :-) *Please list what you need as inputs and outputs* as I did not get your first post correctly. I can find for you the correct things to get. My knowledge is rustic so will try and assist as much as possible. None of the components will be available locally. Rgds.

Needed are the following - VGA/TV OUT - Audio (3.5 mm) OUT - DVD (cant rem the name of those cables) IN - USB IN (read several formats off the USB, browse the file system) - AUDIO IN (Optional)

@Dennis, will take this with you offlist. The same way that others think they are too smart to deny knowledge or have decent discussions with others, I'm going to deprive every single one of them of this and other knowledge too. Infact one of my resolution next year is to ban the words "code/developers/innovation/creativity" entirely from my writing. I'll be intouch with you directly asap. Rgds. You need a media centre. I've personally used MythTV and so can recommend it. There are lots of other ones out there. Here's a somewhat dated comparison: http://static.telematicsfreedom.org/flossmediacenter/EN_FLOSS_Media_Center_C...

How is the UI, is it seamless and fluid? plus I hope they will support DVB-T2
