This is an open invitation to members of this forum to the inaugural Kenya Open Source Awards to be held on 27th May at the Panafric Hotel, Nairobi. The event will kick off at 2.30. It will be preceded by a media briefing at 12.30 which will also be attended by the guest oh honour. As earlier communicated, details are on our website, www.lpakenya.org. The nominations are still ongoing. Its amazing the kind of project nominations that we have received so far. One of the biggest gains that we intend to make from these awards is to map the FOSS community on Kenya. We hope to get a clear picture of who is involved in what project in the FOSS community. Its a kind of an audit of our FOSS activity. We again appeal to you to nominate any individuals, projects or organizations that are actively involved in Open Source so that we can consider them along those that we already have. We know that there is quite a bit of FOSS activity going on out there but nobody knows what the other is doing. For instance, do you know of a hospital that has implemented an open source solution like Care2X? Or a Government Ministry that is running entirely on Linux (I have heard about the Ministry of Youth Affairs but am not sure, anyone with info?). Anyone who has helped an organization to fully migrate to FOSS? Or an Educational institution that uses/trains a lot of Open Source (Like Strath)? Or anyone who has a FOSS project at Freshmeat or Sourceforge etc? Any Individuals who have done some innovative solutions on Open Source? This information will be highly appreciated and we urge you all to come out and support this initiative by giving this information. Please dont forget that you cn also nominate yourself or your organization. Pass the word around. The full list of the award recipients will be availed before the event once we complete the nomination process. Thank you in advance and see you all there. Evans Ikua, LPA-Kenya

Erik,
From the way I read the invite, it is FOSS.

Thanks Nick for offering to assist us online on issues regarding the KRA online services. I was able to get the right kind of assistance from the staff there, who were willing to take me ste by step in 'unravelling' the mystery behind the error messages while using the online services. However, I need to know how to get a VAT certificate on line for a company already registered. The status of my Company hasd no VAT certificate which I need in order to engage in the business without any hindrances. -- Solomon Mburu P.O. Thank you all for the info coming in on FOSS projects. Its much appreciated. Wambugu, I want to thank you for your support of FOSS at KRA and I think of you as a good FOSS ambassador in Government. However, and for the benefit of this list, can you please inform us if you guys sorted out the browser issue where one of your online apps could only be used on Explorer? What am I supposed to do if my organization runs any of the other tens of OSes withouth explorer? That is a hindrance to the freedom of information as well as lack of proper IT Governance. @Mburu, I take it that you mean yours is a registered co. by the registrar of companies and that you now need to register for VAT. Unfortunately at the moment you can only register for VAT obligation online when you are applying to register your company for PIN. After the release of module 2, you will not even need a VAT number, the PIN will be enough, all you will need is to amend your details online and say you would like to be VAT registered. While we wait for that time to come, please email controlroom@kra.go.ke and inform them that your company would like VAT obligation as well. They will do it in an instant and get back to you - Good Luck Nick

controlroom@kra.go.ke? Interesting. A room in the 13th floor of Times Towers. The windows are tinted. Its rather cold coz of the 4 or 5 LG ACs. There is a low hum of the about 10 or so PCs hidden under the long, wide semi-circle desk. 10 or so 19" monitors are evenly spaced out on that desk. Small green and orange lights can be clearly seen on the corner, the 5 server cabinet dulling the hum of the HP blade servers. The control room. Accessible only using a special elevator on the 3rd floor, Banking wing. With its own separate power grid, power backup generator, CCTV security system... Nick, the lead technician on duty is staring at one of the monitors, seemingly lost in thought... On Fri, May 22, 2009 at 5:39 PM, Nick Wambugu <nick.wambugu@gmail.com>wrote:
