With the current power rationing, what power options are there for someone working from home ( to power a laptop). apart from a generator ? For instance is there a DC to AC convertor that can be linked to a car battery ? Speaking of which I do suspect that as of today someone somewhere has a container full of generators docking at the Mombasa Port. Kevin

A lot of people are installing inverters - that charge batteries, and provide output for a few lights etc. Should work for laptop. 4-6 hours. Check with Kenital, Chloride etc ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kevin Ouma" <kevin.ouma@gmail.com> To: "skunkworks" <skunkworks@my.co.ke> Sent: Wednesday, August 5, 2009 12:18:31 PM GMT +03:00 Iraq Subject: [Skunkworks] Power Alernatives With the current power rationing, what power options are there for someone working from home ( to power a laptop). apart from a generator ? Inverters are the best option. You can get Xantrex inverters (a bit pricey), along with some batteries, and you will have an almost uninterrupted power supply. Thanks On Wed, Aug 5, 2009 at 11:58 AM, Riyaz Bachani < riyaz.bachani@ke.wananchi.com> wrote:

Here is the more expensive option for a fully working office. 10 x 200ah 12v deep cycle batteries at 24k each. 1 x 3kva outback inverter charger for about 200k. With this, energy savers, non crt monitors you can power a 20pc office continously even on a 2 day blackout. Plus the beauty is when you choose to get a generator, just plug it in . Good thing with that is your inverter charger acts as your 'default gateway' then all people on the output end never experience a black out, and to increase back up duration all you need to do is add more cells to the battery banks. On 8/5/09, Areba Collins <arebacollins@gmail.com> wrote:

Was just wondering.. How come we are always caught out like this? And to make it worse, the energy ministry are saying they are hoping for rains, with no alternatives spelt out if rains fail (hopefully the wont, most likely they will). Apart from getting inverters and whatnot, is there anything else (an) ordinary Kenyan(s) can do to hold those responsible for this state of affairs accountable for their shortsightedness in planning? What do you guys think? There must be something we can do together ama? On Wed, Aug 5, 2009 at 4:20 PM, Victor Ngeny <victormaritim@gmail.com>wrote:

Infact if you can get inverters+batteries then also install solar panels to be charging the batteries when the weather is favourable and main grid elelectricity is out, u'll be a happy guy bila running expenses of a generator...therefore, u wont need to worry about ur batteries running out.. but ensure equipments not in use r powered off accordingly... Either way, if required esp. for heavy consumers, generators might still be handy with an autostart/stop function. Some have even got an automatic fuel replenishment facility and / or automatic oil lubrication device. If output required is single phase or 3 phase, some have a changeover switch so that u regulate the output u desire. Before i publish an article here...analyze ur needs / requirements vis-a-vis products specifications available and be a happy chap!!

The solutions are with us, i feel you guys about holding government accountable but anyone that proposes energy saving bulbs as a measure to mitigate shortages falls in my very bad group. The kind that in the face of shortage try to consume less instead of produce more. Trust me, they have no plans for el nino which could very well damage the dams. Way i see it, solution is distributed generation, set up your own power stations, for those living in estates, cost share and get some neat equipment that will power your stuff. For manufacturing industry paying over 1 million a month, get diesel generators. (trust me its cheaper). Then there is micro tri generation, use a diesel generator for elec, its exhaust for steam and youll be surprised how much energy you can save. On 8/5/09, JEREMIAH CHUNGE <jayrehmc@gmail.com> wrote:

Generator - utapatana na Michuki - Noise? - Environment-wise? BR, Thuo Wilson 2009/8/5 Areba Collins <arebacollins@gmail.com>

Here is the more expensive option for a fully working office. 10 x 200ah 12v deep cycle batteries at 24k each. 1 x 3kva outback inverter charger for about 200k. Areba I totally agree with you. KPLC should install upstream meters for domestic generators. I believe there is a sizable number of Kenyans who can afford solar panels and or wind turbines which can be supplying the grid with any supplus. If a million domestic users did this I bet it would make a more significant difference than the said energy saving bulbs. In fact the money used to buy the bulbs could be used to subsidize solar panels and other related equipment. About the wind turbines; I saw some called vertical axis turbines. They are less noisy and can run even in slow winds. Very ideal for residential areas. On Wed, Aug 5, 2009 at 7:39 PM, Areba Collins <arebacollins@gmail.com>wrote:

Skunks, Just had a glance of the Power rationing schedule. It's from 0600 to 1800. With proper planning Solar Arrays in North Eastern (What man can do) rather than praying for El nino'( Man cannot do....and neither can he handle the aftermath). One of the main reasons the census exercises are conducted is to aid in the planning purposes. We have data as from the 80's. Who uses this data? Well we are digitizing our electricity meters...Is it too much to ask for UP/Down meters...there's no much RnD required as some countries are using it. On the energy saving bulbs. If all households save 50W. That'd be welcome. Well it'll only reduce a few shillings <100 on your elec bill but nationally that'd be (<100)*count(households). Heck we could power all our lighting load from these solar arrays. Small scale businesses like vinyozis can benefit from the same... ./Me

And how comes street lights are not solar powered? Nigeria seems to have been using it since 2006<http://www.solinternational.com/nigeria-africa.html>! There are even those street lights that use solar and wind<http://www.inhabitat.com/2009/07/13/hybrid-wind-solar-street-lamps/>power for lighting. More information here: http://www.outdoor-solar-lights.com/solar-street-lights.html What I cant figure out is, are they THAT expensive that no one has seriously considered them as a viable option? There some law baring just about everyone from generating electricity - you need to supply a certain amount to the national grid before you can generate for your own use - ask Mumias Sugar, how long it took them to start generating. ./Ok3ch On Wed, Aug 5, 2009 at 6:34 PM, Thuo Wilson <lixton@gmail.com> wrote:

The solutions are with us, i feel you guys about holding government
accountable but anyone that proposes energy saving bulbs as a measure to mitigate shortages falls in my very bad group.

True ok, even know a friend that had a 3.5mw wind generator at malindi but has never been able to sell to the grid. Way i see it, produce as much as you need. Wish it were like those countries where the meter works both ways, so that when you produce excess and at the end of the month you occasionally get a check from KPLC. Actually Mumias Sugar has been generating since the 70s since the complex was built its been fully supplying its own power internally, for staff houses and all their properties etc. I should know.. my dad worked there in the 80s -- SKYPE: sobbayi US: +1 202 470 0525 KE: +254 722 627 691 Okechukwu wrote:
There some law baring just about everyone from generating electricity - you need to supply a certain amount to the national grid before you can generate for your own use - ask Mumias Sugar, how long it took them to start generating.

@ daudi you want an inverter-charger, which will charge your battery and do ac from the battery. Specs? How big is your load? On 8/6/09, Daudi Were <daudi.were@gmail.com> wrote:
