Hi Skunks Being an ardent linux user since ubuntu 6.06, I am facing a situation where I need an antivirus for windows machines. I am currently not in a position to purchase a commercial solution. Torrent options for me would be NOD32 and Kaspersky. I preferred to use NOD32 but its a headache since the hacked keys only last a month. I haven't tried Kaspersky but from what I've seen the keys also expire constantly. Hence I cannot go down that road. Anybody using ClamAV. How is its performance on windows machines? Does it catch viruses? Does it slow down the machine? Apart from AVG free & Avast what other options do I have? Any guidance is highly appreciated. Thanks guys. are you aware that you are openly admitting to stealing other peoples software products through torrent downloads and hacked keys.in some parts of the world you can be arrested by your own admission on email. if you want something free and legal, i use avira. i dont know about antivirus apps slowing machines, if a machine is slow , its slow, upgrade it or get a new one. just dont try and run multiple antivirus programs together , that gives you some amazingly undesirable results. kutz On Thu, Apr 14, 2011 at 10:31 AM, Brian L <lusiola@gmail.com> wrote:

@paul If antiviruses are perfected in windows i wonder then why every now and then theres a new one causing havoc amongst users while on the other *nix end antivirus? maybe just for fun (sic) plus no new viruses every other day. Popularity not withstanding, the architecture used by windows is what creates a very conducive environment for the germination, growth and propagation of viruses. Then i wonder why a good number of windows anti viruses use *nix based utilities for boot up and virus busting? ..... my 2cents (im not starting a *nix vs madirisha wars)

Windows does not limit software production and extension of its OS, thats why most people use it. With great power comes great risks. Windows is popular and people know how to easily develop on it and tweak it. What you are trying to say is Windows purposely make these leaks....and maybe they do......leaks to allow antivirus companies to make and share money with them so that they can also provide upgrades and new releases On Tue, Apr 19, 2011 at 10:27 AM, Nd'wex Common <flexycat@gmail.com> wrote:

I don't know why we complain so much and still thrive in the windows ecosystem. Viruses will target the dominant player to keep antivirus makers in business, its supply vs demand stupid. Once *nix desktop become a little dominant, these trends will shift. Windows is a solid, tested and secure platform. Especially when used with the Windows Essentials or Eset NOD32 range of AV. Ms Office is light years ahead of their *nix counterparts. Peter On Tue, Apr 19, 2011 at 10:32 AM, Paul Kevin <paultitude@gmail.com> wrote:

1. Can any *nix user raise a hand if they have ever experienced BSD [Blue Screen of Death] right in the middle of typing a harmless email or any other task out there? What will a windows user say? 2. When did you last have your machine suddenly freeze in the middle of POST and there was no way out apart from re-installation? What will a windows user say? 3. When did an account crush and had serious problems there after? What will a windows user say? 4. When did you ever feel like your files were being read by somebody else using your machine? What will a windows user say? To all the above questions *nix users will most certainly say never and if ever sorting it out didn't make you sweat. Windows users will be hoping that it doesn't happen any time soon. By the fact that windows has more users that *nix, it doesn't come as a surprise that *nix has been around longer than windows and again it doesn't come as a surprise as to why serious companies dealing with serious transactions and at the same time take their clients serious.

I think most if not all of us owe Windows a lot for our technical expertise, now we can't afford to denigrate it. Truth is, over 95% of IT people exist because of the numerous challenges Windows users face. True or false? On Tue, Apr 19, 2011 at 3:46 PM, Nd'wex Common <flexycat@gmail.com> wrote:
