3G trials still going on till end of year.. its not Telkoms fault [?] - its our CCK, they refused to let smaller players [who cannot afford lumpsum] pay the 25m USD in installments. Negotiations still going on. Meanwhile, there are some sites one can access this 3G ! * How did safcom pay for the 25m USD, counting the fact that Michael Josef sits on the board of CCK ?* A Theory: Government used to own 60% of Telkom, Vodafone 35%, Mobitelia 5% [mabbe more after the IPO] If they decided that they are going to pay USD 25m split in percentages of shareholding to CCK - which of the 3 groups of shareholders do you think paid ? I seriously dont think Government's 60% and Mobitelia's 5% paid - that leaves about 8m USD to be paid by Vodafone. w/regards SNN.

Ndungu, There are so many holes in your theory but u have a very big assumption in that the 25M was from shareholder funds while it was not. The licence was paid from safaricom resources. Just to extrapolate further your Assumption. The network equipment they buy is paid for in the same ratio by the shareholders :) regards Patrick

Today in the morning, at around 0730, there was a feature on the tribulations France Telkom has encountered in its operations at Telkom Kenya, and one of the recurring statements in that feature was that Safaricom was/is receiving favours from the government... Some guy called Steve Biko seemed to blame this as the cause of the woes France Telkom is having in turning in a profit. I think i heard something to the effect that Safaricom didn't pay for the 3G license, but i am not sure coz i was still a bit sleepy... peter; Relying on rumours is very dangerous. These companies want to make money without paying for a license, typical of Kenyan enterprises. Even our MPs don't pay tax. Let them pay USD 8Mil and stop crying. <?p3t3r On Wed, Apr 14, 2010 at 5:05 PM, Bernard Mwagiru <bmwagiru@gmail.com> wrote:

Well, I didn't know it was a rumour, I was recounting what I heard on TV in a channel that is more or less known to peddle facts, but like i said, I was still sleepy coz i had just woken up and thus, i may have heard my own things :-) On Wed, Apr 14, 2010 at 5:08 PM, Peter Osotsi <peter.osotsi@gmail.com>wrote:

@ Wesley The USD 8 million is a theoretical projection based on the shareholding percentage of ownership/shareholding at Safaricom - 25m USD being the 100% figure. <see previous emails above>

I choose to view the arguments as a foot-in-the-door tactic to realise cuts on Capex. Looked differently, supposing Safaricom had paid double what is being asked for, would this have given them (Orange et al) competitive advantage assuming everything turned out as it has?

Well as much as that may have some truth, why was the former orange MD fired? I dont think its coz safaricom was receiving favours. It was bad business strategy(killing CDMA when its already up and running and picking up like a hot cake) and hiring staff who dont understand the business in this environment. But they seem to be redeeming themselves if only it wasnt for those vandals.... On Wed, Apr 14, 2010 at 5:02 PM, Peter Karunyu <pkarunyu@gmail.com> wrote:
