From trying to take over mashable.com to taking over BEBO and then having problems making them successful. Google has also had problems with some ventures while the small players succeed. I dont think that anyone should worry about Safaricom doing anything. I only worry when they dominate voice and net and then fix prices. But for online services, let them bring the game on. They took brightermonday portal to provide their mobile users with job info but the truth is that, the populary of the service is waning and brightermonday.com is going down so fast. There is a good reason why safaricom does not allow developers on their platform, they probably want to do everything! Allow me The reason safaricom is doing well is because those "rebels" who should be innovators want life easy. Someone finds a template online or open source code, and want to sell it for big money and rival established companies in the market without sweating it. In developed countries(like ours) its the small innovators who shake up the market and then get snapped up by bigger businesses, but you will find that someone worked on the business idea or product for a looooong time, tested it, tweeked it, then made it so valuable and different to anything else in the market, and also was not quick to sell it for a song. We are very impatient in this business coz we all want to be bill gates or the facebook guy at 22......they are usually the few less than 1 % who that will happen to . The rest of us have to sweat it. So we cant blame safaricom, we just need to be innovative and to commit ourselves to that innovation. The argument about guys loosing their jobs; looking at that from another view, You would rather 20 Kshs. per min for a call in order to keep guys employed at Safaricom? Alternatively, I suggest that we stop integrating Mpesa with ATMS so that we can keep MPesa Agents at their job. Companies should also stop deploying interactive websites and automated solution so that the clerks can remain employed.
Anyone remember my written words on this list about the Queen Bee and domination? I'm not at all surprised at what direction they are moving, it is so predictable. But many felt that as long as share holders get value, it does not matter. Watch as the Queen Bee takes in as much as it can and very soon will be at many door steps.
