Forget wimax , because it's not a end user radio, secondly with the number of buildings coming up and hundreds of radios around the city , what you might want to do is first get a good gateway server , look at it like a token Internet system, second deploy wide range wifi devices like ubiquity types that can cover a few kms apart , best negotiate with buildings to host your devices for security and power reasons, secondly on your gateway get more than 2 good reliable providers who own the infrastructure, JTL , SAFARICOM, ACCESS KENYA, ZUKU come to mind here , then finally a good load balancer… that should get you started. City wide wifi is hard. you can cover a street or a couple of streets or even a CBD area outdoors, but trying to blanket an entire town/city is hard. The physics of WiFi technology works against you. This is assuming you want everyone to access their wifi with smartphones etc - without a CPE device. The reason it works in some areas e.g. Google-town is because their houses are made of "cardboard" and their WiFi regulation allows for 10x more power than ETSI regulations used in Europe and Kenya. If you're looking to give everyone a CPE device on their roof or in their window & are happy with providing smartphone coverage outdoors at street level - now that's a different story. Check out the model for Mawingu Networks http://www.mawingunetworks.com. There are also a number of similar operators doing this e.g. Haggai with Unwired and others. Wifi works great for hotspots - not so great to "blanket a city" R On Wed, Sep 16, 2015 at 2:27 PM, Daniel Kimotho via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Why not look into EveryLayer Broadband's model (we had already done it for enitre cities): http://www.everylayer.com/ The broadband network model is based on Long Range WiFi. On Thu, Sep 17, 2015 at 8:14 AM, Riyaz Bachani via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Thanks guys, your ideas are amzaing and your projects are also really great.I have experienced city wide wifi...and probably it was effective due to the "cardboards".I know Kenya has the potential for affordable wifi for the masses.Affordable internet connection is what i am looking at,great speeds as well as reliability are in the mix,but my main deal is the numbers.
From my research i have met a tier 1 data provider,do you suppose we can cause a stir when it comes to data in Kenya and give a disruptive service in the major cities.how can we make this work.

Hi, As Riyaz said, its' really about the physics. Blanket WiFi coverage may not translate into a useable connection. It makes more sense to position access points close to users because of transmit power limitations of consumer devices like smartphones and laptops. Next is the economics. City WiFi can succeed if you forget about the 'blanket' and target viable 'hotspots': 1. Large public venues: malls, parks, schools, etc 2. Restaurants 3. Public transport 4. Multi-tenant office and residential buildings The whole idea is to follow human traffic and serve those areas that have viable demand. those are some brilliant ideas. and i think that is the same model that was used by Zuku. I will set up a meeting with them for my research, they are the ones who bought Wazi WIFI. And how can the internet costs be brought down in Kenya??? On 17 September 2015 at 14:46, Bernard Wanyama <bwanyama@eis.co.ug> wrote:
