I don't think there is a place you can do Redhat exams because they are Practical Exams which require a fully setup Lab....The Linux exam offered locally online is the LPIC (Linux Proffesional Certificate)...which i think LPAK offer On Wed, May 20, 2009 at 12:59 PM, Tim Kamau <maqtim@gmail.com> wrote:

Guys, why is it important to be certified with RedHat, when there are so many other Linux distros out there? Isn't there a a general Linux certification that covers all areas (maybe the Linux kernel - being the only thing I know is common to all Linux, or is there another thing?)? I am just wondering. I know very little about Linux, but can wade through it using RTFMs. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "Clothes make the man. Just checked Afralti. They offer Linux essentials and linux administration courses. No certification from redhat etc, just an afralti certificate to show you trained as an admin with them..... On 5/20/09, Njoki Njuguna <njokinjuguna@gmail.com> wrote:

Would love to know what is taught, and where they start and end to give you the certificate. Don't think its worth going to class for Linux! - The point it "Read, read, live and live it, use and use it, and do and do it!" - then tou are qualified and can award yourself. You will be sirprised by the amount of documentation on the net for the same, think goes beyond any other O/S on planet - stand to be corrected. /Wilson/ 2009/5/20 Tim Kamau <maqtim@gmail.com>

I posted the same question on certification to the RedHat Country Manager, find the response below: - Red Hat are currently trying to recruit a training partner in Kenya but these discussions are only just starting and we do not expect to have anyone in place before the end of 2009. Red Hat courses can be done at the training centers in Europe or at Red Hat certified training centres, Torque-IT and Obsidian Systems in Johannesburg, South Africa. The Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) certification is the most sought after and respected certification in IT technical capabilities. The course is one week and the exam is an 8 hour PRACTICAL test. The failure rate is close to 50%. Anyone intending to do Red Hat technical training should first do the pre-assessment test to determine their current capabilities and recommend which courses they should attend. To find the pre-assessment go to https://www.redhat.com/courses/ and click on "Pre-assessment questionaires<https://www.redhat.com/apps/training/assess/>" bottom right. I suggest everyone does the Red Hat Certified Technician (RHCT) course before attempting the Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) exam. In the latest (2009) IDC report on training Red Hat training is rated as the leading IT training organisation in the world. It is the ONLY IT training organisation in the Leaders quadrant measured in terms of Strategies and capabilities. Strong contenders are Lawson Software, SUN, HP, SAP and IBM. Resellers wishing to engage with and resell Red Hat and JBoss solutions should register as Red Hat Ready partners on the web site. Resellers can purchase Red Hat subscriptions via our distributor in South Africa - The Linux Warehouse - www.linuxwarehouse.co.za More information than you needed but hopefully answered in full. :-) Keep the questions coming. One thing people don't get is GNU/linux is a open source community OS.Windows is a commercial OS that you have to buy and to learn most of the stuff you have to get into their certification(costly). So certification is just a paper when it comes to GNU/linux, some companies like redhat are trying to commercialize that .But you have to think back and understand why the GNU/linux was made in the first place, to be free from not only cost but also freedom to use and modify as you want. Most of the guys who develop these distributions may not have unix/linux certification because it does not meet up with the fast advances and improvements that are emerging everyday. My advice(the way i got to love linux) to learn linux is start from scratch.Go to Linux from scratch <http://www.linuxfromscratch.org>, follow the documentation and you will be very savvy with GNU/linux.
