Here is an odd one. I am installing Edubuntu on a PC for my kid. It's dual booting Windows 7. During the installation process, the network interface is active. However, once the installation is complete there is no Ethernet interface and so network is inactive. I am looking at /etc/network/interfaces and I see: auto lo iface lo inet loopback iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 I am sorry, but I haven't read much on Edubuntu. Could this be the default setting - that the network is disabled to protect the kid from the 'hostile Internet' - just in case? Else, why this behaviour? -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 "I can't hear you -- I'm using the scrambler."

if you bring the card up manually after the installation does it work? Kevin On Fri, Jul 12, 2013 at 3:55 PM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com>wrote:

Unfortunately, I did not try that and will not try because I've wiped out Edubuntu and installed Ubuntu proper to see how it behaves. And with Ubuntu, the network is running at install and after. So maybe Edubuntu has that restriction. For me, I prefer to enforce that restriction myself so I will let the kid use Ubuntu. I just have to install the ubuntu-edu-* packages needed. Your best bet here is Network manager f'cking you up! Disable network manager and try bring up the interface manually - have experienced this with lots of distros installed with GUI. A very rare case is SELinux, though might have to try permissive mode too ./Ok3ch On Fri, Jul 12, 2013 at 2:55 PM, Martin Akolo Chiteri < martin.chiteri@gmail.com> wrote:

I would also tend to think that the Edubuntu folks prefer kids to visit the Internet under the supervision of more elderly people. My guess is that you only need to press a button to activate the wireless ethernet interface since I have seen that it has a static address configuration. It should possibly ask you to supply a root password and you are home, safe and dry on the InterWebs. Martin. On Fri, Jul 12, 2013 at 4:59 PM, Okechukwu <okechukwu@gmail.com> wrote:

@Okechukwu, I gave up on getting into the details of that problem. Once Ubuntu Desktop booted the way I wanted, I decided to go with it. I now have the liberty to use Network Manager to tweak the connection. On 12 July 2013 16:59, Okechukwu <okechukwu@gmail.com> wrote:

@Martin, FreeBSD has no kid's stuff anywhere:-) Linux seems to have a lot. The kid has been using Windows and Qimo SxS so I believe it will not quite pose a challenge to her. Since the computer dual boots Windows/Linux (Linux is Default on Grub menu) I believe I just have to understand how much she understands and explain the difference to her. She can then choose what she'd like to do based on what is available in which OS and what her mind tells her. Mine is just to supervise. Nice weekend!! Thanks @Wash, My weekend was fine. Now that your kid is connected to the Internet on Ubuntu (I assume) do we have a mailing list for kids. Something similar to kid.skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke??? Parents should be strictly responsible for the members joining in and moderation of list content, don't you think so? Martin. @Martin, I am not hooking the kid up to the Internet as yet. I need to evaluate her readiness for the Internet, but that too means I have to install Dansguardian+Squid to protect her from the hostile environment:) I am not sure about the mailing list for kids. It's a nice idea, but what do you suggest as the nominal age for a kid to start interacting with online communication? I think even Jubilee's laptop project doesn't contemplate including Internet access. I think kids from Standard 5 onward could be hooked, but then again there are several factors surrounding that... My weekend was fine.
Now that your kid is connected to the Internet on Ubuntu (I assume) do we have a mailing list for kids. Something similar to kid.skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke???
Parents should be strictly responsible for the members joining in and moderation of list content, don't you think so?

FreeBSD has no kid's stuff anywhere:-)
Linux seems to have a lot.

I am installing Edubuntu on a PC for my kid. It's dual booting Windows 7.
During the installation process, the network interface is active. However, once the installation is complete there is no Ethernet interface and so network is inactive.
I am looking at /etc/network/interfaces and I see:
auto lo iface lo inet loopback iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0
I am sorry, but I haven't read much on Edubuntu. Could this be the default setting - that the network is disabled to protect the kid from the 'hostile Internet' - just in case? Else, why this behaviour?

This is good but you may also need to take chances with her and find out what she can discover ``out there''. You just never know .....

Thank you!
but what do you suggest as the nominal age for a kid to start interacting with online communication?
I think it depends, some people are faster others are not as fast. Kuna wenye wanaweza kula githeri / nyoyo (Linux / *BSD UNIX) even before they grow their milk teeth, wengine wananyonyanga maembe ( $place_name_of_os_you_loathe_the_most_here__ ) hadi wakuwe watu wazima! :-D I think even Jubilee's laptop project doesn't contemplate including
Internet access. I think kids from Standard 5 onward could be hooked, but then again there are several factors surrounding that...
I am made to understand that there is a project related to T.V white spaces that should deal with that. Microsoft had a thing or two to do with that. I do not really know .......

This may be a little late, but may help someone someday. On some installs, the eth interface gets renamed during booting, such that the default eth0 becomes eth1 (or some other number). Running "dmesg | grep eth" will usually point this out - error message like "...eth0 renamed to eth2...". If that is the case, changing eth0 to eth1 (or whatever) in the interface file, then restarting networking, sorts things out. However, you have to do this after each reboot. I have yet to figure out what causes/caused that particular headache. ~hth~ On Fri, Jul 12, 2013 at 3:55 PM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com>wrote:

You are missing an auto eth0 So the line auto lo should now be auto lo eth0 --- Man page: http://man.he.net/man5/interfaces Lines beginning with the word "auto" are used to identify the physical interfaces to be brought up when ifup is run with the -a option. (This option is used by the system boot scripts.) Physical interface names should follow the word "auto" on the same line. There can be multiple "auto" stanzas. ifup brings the named interfaces up in the order listed. On Mon, Jul 15, 2013 at 8:15 AM, MotoBaridi <motobaridi@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi Laban, So, is there a reason Edubuntu (I was installing 13.04) 'disabled' the interface by omitting the 'auto' keyword? Maybe that is what I need to find out, otherwise I am so far okay with Ubuntu with the edu packages installed. On 15 July 2013 11:56, Laban Mwangi <lmwangi@gmail.com> wrote:
